ck in the fall of 1999, Norman Conard, a history teacher at the Uniontown High School in Kansas, asked his students to come up with a project for National History Day. While brainstorming ideas, ninth-grader Elizabeth Cambers stumbled on an old clipping from US News and World Report. The story included the line, ‘Irena Sendler saved 2,500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942-43.’

Elizabeth asked her fellow ninth-grader Megan Stewart to help her with her project, and during her free time, Megan pored over the story of Irena Sendler. She learned about how this unassuming young Polish nurse had created thousands of false identity papers to smuggle Jewish children out of the ghetto. To sneak the children past Nazi guards, Sendler hid them under piles of potatoes and loaded them into gunny sacks. She also wrote out lists of the children’s names and buried them in jars, intending to dig them up again after the war so she could tell them their real identities.

"Unlike glasses, which simply bring the world into focus, digital hearing aids strive to recreate the soundscape, amplifying useful sound and suppressing noise," Swain said.
The system uses the iPhone's Wi-Fi sensors to analyse data from nearby fields.

The data is then decoded and turned into sound patterns that are wirelessly transmitted to Swain's customised hearing aids.

So long as one has his iPhone in his pocket, it is possible to create a kind of aural map blended in with the normal output of the hearing aids.

Frank Swain, 32, worked with sound artist Daniel Jones to create the software.

The findings were reported in the journal New Scientist.

Yet as the South Korean giant seeks to make devices like the rigid-curve Galaxy Note Edge stand out from a crowd of flat, big-screen handsets, making money will depend on producing them cost-effectively and coaxing developers to tailor applications for the new format.

Samsung Electronics is headed for its worst annual profit in three years, under siege as Chinese firms like Xiaomi Technology Co and Lenovo Group Ltd reel in buyers with full-function touch-screen smartphones that are cheaper.

Only Apple Inc has maintained full brand premium.

The collective industry move towards larger screens makes distinctive designs tougher to achieve, said Kim Nam-su, a senior Samsung Electronics designer and an architect of the Note Edge.

"A change in the platform can bring about a variety of new considerations...I think a curved screen is a big solution for overcoming those challenges," he said.

As Samsung Electronics moves towards what analysts say could be a nearly one-third drop in operating profit this year, it's launching more mid-tier phones to counter cheaper rivals.

But a high-tech edge for the premium market could also help it compete in an industry that international research firm CCS Insight sees growing to $331 billion by 2018 from $289 billion this year.

The Note Edge is not the first device to use a non-flat format.

Faculty Sections / Google bolsters artificial intelligence efforts, partners with Oxford

In January Google acquired artificial intelligence company Deep Mind for $400 million, according to media reports.

The new hires will be joining Google's Deep Mind team, including three artificial intelligence experts whose work has focused on improving computer visual recognition systems.

Among that team is Oxford Professor Andrew Zisserman, a three-time winner of the Marr Prize for computer vision.

The four founders of Dark Blue Labs will also be joining Google where they will be will be leading efforts to help machines "better understand what users are saying to them".

Google said that three of the professors will hold joint appointments at Oxford, continuing to work part time at the university.

The company on Monday projected stronger-than-expected revenue of $63.5 billion to $66.5 billion in the December quarter, when new iPads and iPhones vie with rival devices from Microsoft Corp and Amazon.com Inc for consumers' holiday outlays.

Shares of Apple rose 1.3 percent to about $101.10 in after-hours trade.

But sales of the iPad, which helped launch the mainstream tablet market in 2010, slid for the third straight quarter. A gradual decline in tablet demand worldwide has worried investors already concerned with Apple's slowing growth, who are awaiting a new device that can energize its expansion.

Sales of Apple's tablet slid more than 7 percent from the previous quarter to 12.3 million units, and were down 13 percent from the year-ago period.

Some investors hope that Apple's recently forged alliance with International Business Machines Corp, intended to drive tablet and phone sales to corporate customers, may help reverse a decline in sales of the tablet device.

Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said in an interview that the pair of tech giants had already signed on 50 "foundational" or initial clients, and the two intend to introduce their first jointly designed software apps next month.

"The level of interest from the corporate world has been incredible," Maestri said.

Nokia said the manufacturing, distribution and sales of the N1 tablet will be handled by Taiwan's Foxconn.

Sebastian Nystrom, the head of products at Nokia's Technologies unit, said the company was looking to follow up with more devices in the future.

The tablet, which sports Nokia's own interface, is planned to be in stores in China in the first quarter of next year for an estimated price of $249 before taxes with sales to expand to other markets after that.

After the 5.6 billion-euro deal with Microsoft, Nokia was left with its network equipment and services business plus its smaller HERE mapping and navigation business and Technologies unit, which manages licensing payments on its patents and conducts research and development.

Last week Chief Executive Rajeev Suri said the company was looking into ways to bring its brand back into the consumer market through licensing deals with electronic product makers.

John Chen, who took the reins at the struggling mobile technology company in November 2013, has moved rapidly to try to get the one-time investor darling back on track. The company has sold assets, struck partnerships to lower manufacturing costs and broaden app offerings, and raised cash via the sale of real estate holdings in its hometown of Waterloo, Ontario.

"Once we turn this company to profitability again, I will do everything I can to never lose money ever again," Chen told Reuters in an interview this week. "That is definitely something I am very focused on doing."

The Hong Kong-born executive, 59, made his name at Sybase, a struggling database software firm that he rescued and sold a decade later to SAP for $5.8 billion in 2010.

"If you look at my track record at Sybase, I think we made money for some 60 quarters in a row, even when the dotcom bubble blew up we were profitable. I like that philosophy," said Chen, who added he believes the worst is now behind BlackBerry.

"We will survive as a company and now I am rather confident," he said. "We're managing the supply chain, we are managing inventories, we are managing cash, and we have expenses now at a number that is very manageable. BlackBerry has survived; now we have to start looking at growth."

A year ago, the smartphone industry pioneer was in the midst of a painful restructuring, scrambling to find a suitor and trying to play down media reports of its "death spiral."

A year after Chen stepped in as CEO, BlackBerry may have regained some of its lost swagger. The company is hiring again and though it has yet to turn steady profits, Chen has begun acquiring small companies and investing in growth.

"He stepped in to catch a falling knife, which is what BlackBerry was at the time losing $1 billion plus," said Prem Watsa, whose Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd is a major shareholder and which helped bankroll a debt recapitalization that led to Chen's arrival.

"He came in and very quickly stabilized it and very quickly laid out a roadmap to breakeven."

The medical universities would come up in Rajshahi and Chittagong, she said while inaugurating the newly constructed outdoor complex of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Saturday.

“Universities are very important if we want to provide better services to the people.”

“We’ve already decided that besides the university here, we will set up two more in Chittagong and Rajshahi. The orders have already been issued.”

The military-run hospitals that have 500 beds will be upgraded to medical colleges.

“I told the army that those with 500 beds can be converted into medical colleges.”

মাইক্রোসফট স্মার্টওয়াচ উন্মোচনের প্রস্তুত নিচ্ছে বলে সর্বশেষ খবরটি জানিয়েছে প্রভাবশালী মার্কিন ম্যাগাজিন ফোর্বস। রোববার প্রকাশিত ওই প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, ব্যবহারকারীর হৃদস্পন্দনের উপর নজর রাখবে মাইক্রোসফটের স্মার্টওয়াচ, কাজ করবে একাধিক মোবাইল প্লাটফর্মে।

ফোর্বস জানিয়েছে, একটানা ব্যবহার করলেও পুরো দু’দিন চার্জ থাকবে মাইক্রোসফটের স্মার্টওয়াচে। আনুষ্ঠানিক ঘোষণা আসার আগেই মাইক্রোসফটের স্মার্টওয়াচ সম্পর্কে এই তথ্যগুলো প্রতিষ্ঠানটির সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট এক গোপন সূত্রের কাছ থেকে সংগ্রহ করা হয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছে ফোর্বস।

ওই প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, ডিভাইসটির উন্মোচনী অনুষ্ঠান হবে আগামী কয়েক সপ্তাহের মধ্যেই, আর তার পরপরই বাজারে বিক্রি শুরু হবে ডিভাইসটি। সামনের ‘হলিডে সিজন’ ধরাই নাকি মাইক্রোসফটের লক্ষ।

সব মিলিয়ে স্মার্টফোন আর ট্যাবলেট কম্পিউটারের মতো ‘স্মার্টওয়াচের বাজারেও কী মাইক্রোসফটের অভিষেক একটু বেশিই দেরি হয়ে গেল?’— প্রশ্ন এখন সেটাই।

প্রযুক্তিবিষয়ক সাইট সিনেট এক প্রতিবেদনে জানিয়েছে, ব্যাকটেরিয়ার মতো অনুজীব যে মহাকাশে টিকে থাকতে পারে সে বিষয়টি মহাকাশ বিজ্ঞনীরা আবিষ্কার করেছেন আগেই। তবে মহাকাশে সামুদ্রিক প্ল্যাঙ্কটনের উপস্থিতি ছিল একেবারেই অপ্রত্যাশিত।

রাশিয়ান সংবাদ মাধ্যম ইতার-তাসকে দেওয়া এক সাক্ষাৎকারে রাশিয়ান আইএসএস অরবিটাল মিশনের প্রধান ভ্লাদিমির সলোভইয়েভ বলেন, “গবেষণার ফলাফল একেবারেই চমকে দেওয়ার মতো। আইএসএসের জানালার উপর আমরা সামুদ্রিক প্ল্যাঙ্কটন আর মাইক্রোস্কপিক পার্টিকলের চিহ্ন খুঁজে পেয়েছি। এই বিষয়ে আরো গবেষণা করা প্রয়োজন।”

সামুদ্রিক প্লাঙ্কটন মহাকাশে পৌঁছালো কীভাবে সে বিষয়টি নিয়ে এখনও নিশ্চিত হতে পারেননি বিজ্ঞানীরা। তবে বেশ কয়েকটি সম্ভাব্য তত্ত্ব নিয়ে কাজ করছেন তারা।

নিয়মিত বিভিন্ন মহাকাশযান আশা-যাওয়া করে স্পেস স্টেশনটিতে। আইএসএস কেন্দ্র করে বিভিন্ন মহাকাশ গবেষণাসংশ্লিষ্ট কর্মকাণ্ডে স্পেস স্টেশনটির চারপাশ অসম্ভব দূষিত বলে জানিয়েছেন সলোভইয়েভ। আপাতত মহাকাশ স্টেশনটি ঘষেমেজে যতটুকু সম্ভব চকচকে করার চেষ্টা চলছে। “দূরপাল্লার অভিযানে এটি খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ”-- মন্তব্য সলোভইয়েভের।

১৪ অগাস্ট মঙ্গলের বুকে বেশ কিছু ছবি তুলেছিল কিউরিওসিটি। বেশিরভাগ ছবিই ছিল ধুলার মধ্যে ডুবে থাকা পাথরের। তবে জল্পনা কল্পনার শুরু একটি বিশেষ ছবি থেকে। ধুলার স্তরের নিচে চাপা পরে থাকা পাথরগুলোর সঙ্গেই পড়েছিল বেশ বড় আকারের একটা ‘হাড়’। দেখতে অনেকটাই মানব শরীরের উরুর হাড়ের মতো ছিল সেটি।

অনেকে তো ভেবেই বসেছিলেন, মহাবিশ্বের মানবসভ্যতা যে একা নয় তার প্রমাণ অবশেষে মঙ্গলেই মিললো। তবে নাসা এই বিষয়ে ভিন্ন ব্যাখ্যা দিচ্ছে বলে জানিয়েছে সিনেট ডটকম।

মৃত কোনও প্রাণীর ফসিল নয়, কিউরিওসিটি দীর্ঘ দিন পানি অথবা বাতাসের ঘর্ষণের ফলে ক্ষয় হওয়া একটা পাথরের ছবি তুলেছে বলেই জানিয়েছে মার্কিন স্পেস এজেন্সিটি।

সাধারণ মানুষের মধ্যে ভুল ধারণা ও বিভ্রান্তি ঠেকাতে ছবিটি প্রকাশের পর খুব দ্রুত এক আনুষ্ঠানিক বিবৃতিও দিয়েছে নাসা।

“মঙ্গলেও যদি কখনও প্রাণের অস্তিত্ব থেকেও থাকে তবে সেটা অনুজীবের মতো ছোট কোনও কিছু ছিল বলেই মনে করেন বিজ্ঞানীরা। মঙ্গলের বায়ুমণ্ডলে কখনও বড় আকারের জীবের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় অক্সিজেন ছিল না। তাই বড় আকারের ফসিলের খোঁজ পাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা নেই বললেই চলে।”--বক্তব্য নাসার।

হাড়ের মতো দেখতে যে বস্তুটি নিয়ে এত উত্তেজনা, মানব দেহের উরুর হাড়ের সঙ্গে পার্থক্যও রয়েছে তার। মানুষের উরুর হাড়ের তুলনায় ছবির বস্তুটি অনেক বেশি বাঁকা বলেই জানিয়েছেন বিজ্ঞানীরা।

‘গড পার্টিকেল’ বা ঈশ্বর কণা সম্পর্কে এ নতুন সতর্কবার্তা দিয়েছেন খ্যাতনামা পদার্থবিজ্ঞানী স্টিফেন হকিং। তিনি বলছেন, “যে কোনো সময়ই মহাবিশ্বের ধ্বংস ডেকে আনতে পারে এ কণা। আমরা এর আভাসও পাব না”।

২০১২ সালে বিজ্ঞানীরা এই ঈশ্বর কণার অস্তিত্ব খুঁজে পান। যে কণা সম্পর্কে পুরোপুরি জানা গেলে এই বিশাল মহাবিশ্বের সৃষ্টি রহস্য উদঘাটন করা সম্ভব হবে।

হকিং বলছেন, অতি উচ্চ শক্তি স্তরে অস্থিতিশীল হয়ে উঠতে পারে হিগস বোসন কণা। যার কারণে ‘বিপর্যয়কর শূণ্যতা ক্ষয়’ সৃষ্টি হতে পারে। আর এতেই ধ্বংস হতে পারে স্থান-কাল।

তবে অদূর ভবিষ্যতে এমন আকস্মিক বিপর্যয়ের সম্ভাবনা নেই বলেই জানিয়েছেন হকিং। কিন্তু অতি উচ্চ শক্তি স্তরে হিগস বোসন কণা অস্থিতিশীল হয়ে ওঠার বিপদটাকে একেবারে উপেক্ষা করা যায় না বলেও সতর্ক করেছেন তিনি।
