Software Engineering / Be the "Good Boss"

The saying, “Staff don’t leave bad companies, they leave bad bosses” cropped into my mind recently, it was brought there by a conversation with a client of mine, over the general happiness of his sales team.

This particular client mentioned how his staff are churning over their existing client base while attempting to find new clients.

He specifically mentioned how his sales team was battling to make target. He went on to elaborate how demotivating it is not only for himself but for his sales team in general, when they get punted from pillar to post in the hunt for the right person.

Having been in this position myself, I can definitely sympathise. Selling to other businesses is tough, it is even tougher when you have limited information on that business, and it becomes soul destroying when you invest time and effort into a prospective client that looks promising, to have the deal shut down because the person you are dealing with is

1. Not the decision maker

2. Has no access to the decision maker

Working in the B2 B market is not for sissy’s, but having the tools to get to where you need to be makes it a little bit easier.

If it’s easier for your staff to get to the decision makers, it is easier for them to sort their leads into those that will go somewhere now and those that will go somewhere later.

This makes it easier for your staff to allocate their time where it is best served and ultimately easier for them to build a flush pipeline and intern hit target.

A sales rep that is consistently hitting and exceeding target is a happy motivated sales rep who will continue to work hard.

So, be the good boss, give your team the tools they need to make the sales you want.

Historian Yuval Noah Harari argues that the only reason humans dominated over all other life forms in our planet is because of our capacity to tell stories. It allowed us to form groups and work towards targets that are not visible in front of us where other animals had to depend on instincts and feelings alone. This is why there is revolutions among humans but not among bees who want to overthrow the queen bee.

Over time, this storytelling has become part of our nature. The same way we crave emotional connection even if it provide little survival necessity in an individualistic society today, we crave to be a part of a bigger story all the time.

Here comes in all the talk about finding a purpose and need to constantly feel as if everything has to lead to something. Here is where all the great motivators, leaders, and even companies come in, showing how to achieve meaning through the work they prescribe. In the end it all boils down to telling a good story through your work.

Even if you are not planning on starting a cult any time soon, it helps to keep in mind this mantra when working with a team. Tell your team members what to do, maybe how to do it, but be sure to mention why. Here's a quick tip: ask yourself 'why' twice before giving the instruction and put the two answers in there when you deliver your message. This adds clarity in the work that helps them navigate a lot of unpredictabile barriers in their path.

Here's a quick tip: ask yourself 'why' twice before giving the instruction and put the two answers in there when you deliver your message.
This is why the author Simon Sinek wrote a whole book titled 'Start With Why'. We all want be part of a story arc, large or small, let your team members tell their story with their work and let the magic happen.

As co-founder of Hotwire.com and CEO of Zillow for the last seven years, 39-year-old Spencer Rascoff fits most people’s definition of success. As a father of three young children, Spencer is a busy guy at home and at work.

What’s the one thing that Spencer refuses to do on the weekend? Work—at least, in the traditional sense. Rascoff says:

I never go into the office on weekends, but I do check e-mail at night. My weekends are an important time to unplug from the day-to-day and get a chance to think more deeply about my company and my industry. Weekends are a great chance to reflect and be more introspective about bigger issues.”

A new study from Stanford shows that Rascoff is on to something.

The study found that productivity per hour declines sharply when the workweek exceeds 50 hours, and productivity drops off so much after 55 hours that there’s no point in working any more. That’s right, people who work as much as 70 hours (or more) per week actually get the same amount done as people who work 55 hours.

Successful people know the importance of shifting gears on the weekend to relaxing and rejuvenating activities. Like Spencer, they use their weekends to create a better week ahead.

This is easier said than done, so here’s some help. The following list contains 10 things that successful people do to find balance on the weekend and to come into work at 110% on Monday morning.

1. They Disconnect

Disconnecting is the most important weekend strategy on this list, because if you can’t find a way to remove yourself electronically from your work Friday evening through Monday morning, then you’ve never really left work.

Making yourself available to your work 24/7 exposes you to a constant barrage of stressors that prevent you from refocusing and recharging. If taking the entire weekend off handling work e-mails and calls isn’t realistic, try designating specific times on Saturday and Sunday for checking e-mails and responding to voicemails. For example, check your messages on Saturday afternoon while your kids are getting a haircut and on Sunday evenings after dinner. Scheduling short blocks of time will alleviate stress without sacrificing availability.

2. They Minimize Chores

Chores have a funny habit of completely taking over your weekends. When this happens, you lose the opportunity to relax and reflect. What’s worse is that a lot of chores feel like work, and if you spend all weekend doing them, you just put in a seven-day workweek. To keep this from happening, you need to schedule your chores like you would anything else during the week, and if you don’t complete them during the allotted time, you move on and finish them the following weekend.

3. They Reflect

Weekly reflection is a powerful tool for improvement. Use the weekend to contemplate the larger forces that are shaping your industry, your organization, and your job. Without the distractions of Monday to Friday busy work, you should be able to see things in a whole new light. Use this insight to alter your approach to the coming week, improving the efficiency and efficacy of your work.

4. They Exercise

No time to exercise during the week? You have 48 hours every weekend to make it happen. Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a soothing neurotransmitter that reduces stress. Exercise is also a great way to come up with new ideas. Innovators and other successful people know that being outdoors often sparks creativity.

I know that a lot of my best ideas come to me while I’m surfing. While you’re out in the ocean, the combination of invigorating activity and beautiful scenery creates the perfect environment for an influx of creativity. Whether you’re running, cycling, or gardening, exercise leads to endorphin-fueled introspection. The key is to find a physical activity that does this for you and then to make it an important part of your weekend routine.

5. They Pursue a Passion

You might be surprised what happens when you pursue something you’re passionate about on weekends. Indulging your passions is a great way to escape stress and to open your mind to new ways of thinking. Things like playing music, reading, writing, painting, or even playing catch with your kids can help stimulate different modes of thought that can reap huge dividends over the coming week.

6. They Spend Quality Time with Family

Spending quality time with your family on the weekend is essential if you want to recharge and relax. Family time on the weekend is so important to Spencer Rascoff that he flies home for the weekend, no matter how far away he is, even if he has to be in the same city the following week. Weekdays are so hectic that the entire week can fly by with little quality family time. Don’t let this bleed into your weekends. Take your kids to the park, take your spouse to his or her favorite restaurant, and go visit your parents. You’ll be glad you did.

7. They Schedule Micro-Adventures

Buy tickets to a concert or play, or get reservations for that cool new hotel that just opened downtown. Instead of running on a treadmill, plan a hike. Try something you haven’t done before or perhaps something you haven’t done in a long time. Studies show that anticipating something good to come is a significant part of what makes the activity pleasurable. Knowing that you have something interesting planned for Saturday will not only be fun come Saturday, but it will significantly improve your mood throughout the week.

8. They Wake Up at the Same Time

It’s tempting to sleep in on the weekend to catch up on your sleep. Though it feels good temporarily, having an inconsistent wake-up time disturbs your circadian rhythm. Your body cycles through an elaborate series of sleep phases in order for you to wake up rested and refreshed. One of these phases involves preparing your mind to be awake and alert, which is why people often wake up just before their alarm clock goes off (the brain is trained and ready). When you sleep past your regular wake-up time on the weekend, you end up feeling groggy and tired. This isn’t just disruptive to your day off, it also makes you less productive on Monday because your brain isn’t ready to wake up at your regular time. If you need to catch up on sleep, just go to bed earlier.

9. They Designate Mornings as Me Time

It can be difficult to get time to yourself on the weekends, especially if you have family. Finding a way to engage in an activity you’re passionate about first thing in the morning can pay massive dividends in happiness and cleanliness of mind. It’s also a great way to perfect your circadian rhythm by forcing yourself to wake up at the same time you do on weekdays. Your mind achieves peak performance two-to-four hours after you wake up, so get up early to do something physical, and then sit down and engage in something mental while your mind is at its peak.

10. They Prepare for the Upcoming Week

The weekend is a great time to spend a few moments planning your upcoming week. As little as 30 minutes of planning can yield significant gains in productivity and reduced stress. The week feels a lot more manageable when you go into it with a plan because all you have to focus on is execution.

Investment in education is essential for Haiti to lift incomes and fight poverty. But in this area like every other, decision-makers face many options. How can limited resources be spent to achieve the most possible? That is a question that the research project Haiti Priorise sets out to answer.

The Copenhagen Consensus is publishing new research papers written by education economists on crucial topics including building more schools, developing teachers, teaching in Creole instead of French, and providing scholarships to keep girls in school.

These research papers are among the more than 40 being released by Haiti Priorise, in order to provide more information and data about solutions to the big challenges facing Haiti – not just on education but also health, infrastructure, environment and economy.

Next week, a panel of eminent Haitian economists, and a youth forum from across Haiti will study all of the research, and suggest priorities.

Today, we want to highlight three policies analyzed in a brand new paper from the well-known education economist Atonu Rabbani. His general point is that one of the most powerful education investments that can be made is in early childhood education.

Professor Rabbani has analyzed early childhood education around the world. He finds that it creates lifelong effects for the children who receive it. It lifts incomes substantially, decreases the chance of incarceration, and reduces the impact of negative things like nutritional deficiencies.

He proposes a simple policy where Haitian children aged 4-5 years old at the pre-primary school level receive early childhood education for two years in small groups of 25. Each group requires two trained ECE facilitators along with a helper. Although called “education”, the intervention includes teacher-led activities involving toys and the development of social skills through games.

Currently, Haiti has about 516,000 children aged 4 and 5 years. It seems feasible to reach about half of this population, or around 258,000 children per year.

This would cost 5,500 gourdes ($79) per student per year. This intervention increases the chances that children will spend more time in schooling later, so we need to consider that cost, too. This gives us a total cost per year of 6.9 billion gourdes ($100 million).

Based on a famous, long-term research experiment in Jamaica, there is good evidence that such a policy will lead to an increase of 35 percent in earnings for the children, from the age they start working at around 16. For someone earning today’s average of around 63,000 gourdes ($910), it would mean an additional 22,000 gourdes ($318) per year. For one cohort of children, that adds up to about 115 billion gourdes ($1.6 billion) in today’s money.

The return on investment is considerable: for every gourde that Haiti spends on early childhood education, the benefits are worth 14 gourdes.

Professor Rabbani makes the point that while it is important to start investing in education as early as possible, it is also important to continue the investment later.

Haiti has made progress promoting school attendance. Professor Rabbani suggests that an important additional area of focus could be lifting the quality of primary education.

In Kenya and India, putting students into groups according to their learning level has improved performance.

This requires students to be tracked according to their achievement levels (as measured through, say, test scores in language or mathematics), grouped, and put into special classes alongside their regular classes.

The program would target about 870 thousand children in primary school.

The costs would add up to about 27 billion gourdes ($390 million). Again, this is expected to lift incomes when children grow up, by about 12,000 gourdes ($170) a year, leading to benefits worth 235 billion gourdes ($3.3 billion). So every gourde spent would generate benefits worth nine gourdes.

Finally, Professor Rabbani suggests using payments to parents to prevent their children dropping out of secondary school. These are known as ‘conditional cash transfers.’ Among the children who start sixth grade, only 30 percent eventually finish. Dr. Rabbani suggests paying around 8,300 gourdes ($120) per child to the poorest households, for students between the ages of 11 and 15, if they stay in school. The program would cost around 31,000 ($550) gourdes per child over five years, from both payments and extra schooling costs. For the complete program, the cost is 16 billion gourdes ($230 million). On average, his research suggests this would lead to one extra year of schooling for each student, which means an income boost, along with the help to the poorest families. In total, the benefits are worth 5 gourdes for every gourde spent.

All of the proposals have a great return on investment – but all also involve up-front costs, for large future impacts. What this means is that investments today could reap large benefits for many years to come.

ক্যাপশন দিয়েছেন- Life Goals!
