Have you ever wondered why traffic always slows when people are driving by an accident? Do you moan about the fact that people are attracted by the gruesome, and yet find that you glance over too as you drive by? Well, it’s not really your fault, you (and everybody else) can’t resist looking at scenes of danger. It’s your “old brain” telling you to PAY ATTENTION.

You have 3 brains — In my book, Neuro Web Design: What Makes Them Click? I talk about the idea that you really don’t have one brain, you have three. The “new brain” is the conscious, reasoning, logical brain that you think you know best; the mid brain” is the part of the brain that processes emotions, and the “old brain” is the part of the brain that is most interested in your survival.

From reptiles to people — If you look at brains from an evolutionary perspective, the “old brain” developed first (hence the name “old brain”!). In fact, that part of our brain is very similar to the brain of a reptile, which is why some people call it the “reptilian” brain.

“Can I eat it? Can I have sex with it? Will it kill me?” – The job of your old brain is to constantly scan the environment and answer the questions: “Can I eat it? Can I have sex with it? Will it kill me?” That’s really all the old brain cares about, is food sex and danger. When you think about it, this is important. Without food you’ll die, without sex the species won’t continue, and if you are killed the other two questions don’t matter. So animal brains developed early on to care intensely about these three topics. As animals evolved they developed other capacities (emotions, logical thought), but they retained a part of their brain to always be scanning what is going on for these three critical questions.

You can't resist — What this means is that you just can’t resist noticing food, sex, or danger. It doesn’t matter how hard you try to not notice these 3 things in your surroundings, you will always notice them. It’s the old brain working. You don’t necessarily have to do anything once you notice, for example, you don’t have to eat the chocolate cake when you see it, you don’t have to flirt with the attractive person who walked into the room, and you don’t have to run away from the large scary guy that walked in the room with the good looking woman. But you WILL notice all of those things whether you want to or not.

Cake, pretty woman, and a crash on the home page — I get emails from people who have read about the old brain in my book. They will write to me wanting advice about how they should fit a picture of cake, a woman in a bikini, and an industrial accident all at the home page of their corporate website. (I do get some interesting emails!). I’m not advocating that you do that! I am pointing out that if you want to get someone’s attention at a website, then any images or headlines that include or imply food, sex, or danger will definitely get attention. But you will have to decide what is appropriate!

Have you seen any good examples of websites that use these ideas effectively (besides just sex sites — don’t send me URLs for those)?

Meditation made easy –Follow these tips

    Comfortable surrounding- It is advisable to meditate in a quiet place. This saves you from distraction and helps you go deeper in your experience.
    Be regular with the practice- It is a good idea to meditate at least twice a day and be regular with the practice.Only then will you be able to observe its positive effects with each passing day.
    Meditate with your buddies- You could get together with some of your close buddies and meditate in a group. This will enhance your experience; it will also help you to be regular with your practice.
    Try some stretches before meditating –This helps release the stress and tension in various parts of your body and helps you relax to have a more enjoyable meditation.
    Observe your thoughts- Do not make an effort to resist your thoughts. Let them flow. Meditation is effortless.
    Take it easy- Make sure you meditate for at least 10-15 minutes. Do not be in a hurry to open your eyes.
    Make sure your stomach is not full– This will prevent you from falling asleep!

বিভিন্ন দেশের সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানে ব্যবহূত পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যারে থাকা ম্যালওয়্যারের কারণে এ বছর পাঁচ হাজার কোটি মার্কিন ডলার ক্ষতি হতে পারে।

সিঙ্গাপুর জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় (এনএসইউ) ও বাজার গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠান আইডিসির গবেষকেরা সম্প্রতি পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহারে ঝুঁকির এই তথ্য জানিয়েছেন। এক প্রতিবেদনে এ তথ্য প্রকাশ করেছে পিটিআই।

‘দ্য লিংক বিটুইন পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যার অ্যান্ড সাইবার সিকিউরিটি ব্রিচেস’ নামের গবেষণায় বিভিন্ন দেশের সাইবার নিরাপত্তার বিষয়টি ও পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যারের কারণে সাইবার আক্রমণের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে সচেতন হওয়ার কথা বলেছেন গবেষকেরা।

গবেষকেরা বিভিন্ন দেশের সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানে জরিপ করে দেখেছেন অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যের গোপনীয়তার বিষয়টি নিয়ে বেশি আশঙ্কায় থাকতে হয়। এ ছাড়াও গোপনীয় সরকারি নথি, ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থাপনার তথ্যে সাইবার হামলা বিষয়ে আতঙ্কিত থাকতে হয়।

মাইক্রোসফটের সাইবার অপরাধ বিভাগের কর্মকর্তা ডেভিড ফিন জানিয়েছেন, ‘সাইবার অপরাধীরা যেকোনো নিরাপত্তা দুর্বলতা খুঁজে তা থেকে মুনাফা বের করছে যাতে সবাইকে আর্থিক ক্ষতির মুখে পড়তে হচ্ছে। অর্থের লোভে সাইবার দুর্বৃত্তরা কম্পিউটার নেটওয়ার্ক ভেঙে ফেলার নতুন পথ খুঁজে বের করছে এবং তারা যা চাই তা করতে পারছে। ব্যক্তিগত তথ্য চুরি, অর্থ আত্মসাতের মতো কাজগুলো হরহামেশাই করছে।


আইডিসির গবেষকেরা জানিয়েছেন, এ বছরে বিশ্বের বড় বড় ব্যবসা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোকে ৫০ হাজার কোটি মার্কিন ডলার পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যারের ম্যালওয়্যার সামলাতে খরচ করতে হতে পারে। এর মধ্যে ১২ হাজার ৭০০ কোটি ডলার খরচ হবে নিরাপত্তা ব্যবস্থাপনায় আর ৩৬ হাজার কোটিরও বেশি খরচ হতে পারে তথ্য চুরি রোধে।

অন্যদিকে বৈশ্বিক গ্রাহক পর্যায়ে এ বছর দুই হাজার ৫০০ কোটি মার্কিন ডলার ম্যালওয়্যারের কারণে নিরাপত্তা বাবদ ও কম্পিউটার সারাই বাবদ খরচ হতে পারে। শুধু তাই নয় ১২০ কোটি ঘণ্টা নিরাপত্তা হুমকি ঠেকাতে ব্যয় হতে পারে।
পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যারের ঝুঁকি সম্পর্কে আইডিসির প্রধান গবেষক জন গ্যান্টজ জানিয়েছেন, পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহার মাইন ভর্তি মাঠের মধ্য দিয়ে হেঁটে যাওয়ার মতো। কখন বিপদ ঘটে গেছে ব্যবহারকারী বুঝতেই পারবেন না। জেনেশুনে পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যারের ব্যবহার কারণে ধ্বংসাত্মক পরিণতি হতে পারে।

জন গ্যান্টজ আরও জানিয়েছেন, অনেক সময় আর্থিক ক্ষতির বিষয়টি মেনে নেওয়া যায় কিন্তু ব্যবসায় যদি পাইরেটেড সফটওয়্যারের কারণে ধস নামে সে ক্ষতি পোষানো যায় না। তাই বৈধ সফটওয়্যার শুরুতে বেশি দাম দিয়ে কিনলেও পরে তা লাভজনক হয়ে ওঠে।
