Business Communication Course outline

Upon succesful completion of Business Communication course, students will be able to know the following aspects which are given as coure outline: (Each lecture contains 3 hours of interactive instruction whereas lecture 3 and 8 contain 6 hours each)
 
Lecture 1.    Introduction: What is communication, types of communication, communication process, importance of Business Communication, truths of communication, types of informal communication(Grapevine), examples of downward, upward communication and horizontal communication etc.

Lecture 2. The use of technology in Business Communication---blessing or curse; the positive use of forum and social web of DIU, different search engines e.g. google and yahoo, face book etc.

Lecture 3.
   Perception, Adaptation and the Selection of Words, Construction of Clear Sentences, Paragraphs and Effective writing for meaningful and effective Communication. Kiss principle; How to write positive sentence, use of transitional words, you-view point, how to avoid camouflaged verbs, word-repetition, sexist words and rubber stamps, etc.

Lecture 4.  E-mail and memo writing. Abbreviation commonly used in business.

Lecture 5. Listening skill: the most important skill in communication, ten commandments of listening and Nonverbal communication and its importance.

Lecture 6. What is talking and its key elements, Presentation techniques, Public Speaking and Oral Communication, How to go for argument, debate-practice.

Lecture 7. How to conduct a meeting, how to participate in meeting, how to write minutes, good telephone techniques, team building skills.

Lecture 8.     Different Types of Letters, Flyers, Promotional Materials and Sales Messages in Business. How to write negative messages.

Lecture 9.    Strategies in the Job-Search Process. How to be successful in career, Sense of purpose, how to open the door to your future. Cover letter and CV writing.

Lecture 10.    Basics of Report Writing: Long and short report, term paper.

Lecture 11.    Cross cultural communication and its importance. Examples of people's patterns of behavior and way of thinking in different cultures.


The course outline's been developed and prepared based on the book Basic Business Communication by Lesikar and the course materials of Business English that I did with the British Council Under the University of Cambridge.
