Exercise regularly

Yes, exercising for at least 30 minutes will help keep your heart healthy as you age. If hitting the gym is a problem for you, then just time your pedometer and start walking.

Keep salt to a minimum
Excess salt in your diet can cause blood pressure elevation, which could increase your chances of developing heart problems. So, be cautious while cooking food, by making sure that you are not consuming more than 6 gms of salt a day.

Quit smoking
Smoking may seem cool, but it does more harm than good, and is known to have a negative effect on the heart.

Limit drinking
Excess alcohol consumption can elevate your blood pressure and affect your good cholesterol. It can also affect your heart rate. So, moderation is the key for good health.

Maintain a healthy weight

If you are obese, you should consider getting into shape, as obesity can lead to heart disease and other related complications.

Add fresh fruit to your diet
Fresh fruits are loaded with fibre and are packed with vitamins and minerals. Besides, they are also low in calories and contain antioxidant properties, which will help your heart stay young and healthy.

Avoid junk food
Junk food is loaded with bad fat, which can affect your cholesterol levels and block your arteries. So stay away from junk food and instead snack on nuts or fresh fruit.

Sleep well
A good night’s sleep is the best weapon to fight most health problems, because when we are asleep our body goes into a repair mechanism. So, make it a point to get adequate rest at night.

Eat a balanced diet

Make sure you include lots of colour on your plate, in the form of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, get your essential nutrients from milk, nuts and other healthy foods.

Avoid stress
Stress, has an adverse effect on the heart. So try and adopt fun activities to help you de-stress. You can also take up meditation and yoga for a stress free life.
