Dynamic uses of Prawn shell

In Bangladesh, huge amount of prawn shell are wasted although it can be used in different promising sectors. One of the main components of prawn shell is chitin. The most useful derivatives of chitin is chitosan which is chemically defined as a copolymer of two residues: 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-β-D-glucopyranose and 2-amino-2-deoxy-β glucopyranose. Chitosan is being used in many traditional and potential applications like in water and beverages clarification and purification, wound dressings, drug delivery, contact lens, bandages, cholesterol reducing agent, cosmetic and personal care etc. Here some the modern applications of chitosan are mentioned:

1. In the wastewater treatment as coagulant and substitute to other chemical flocculants

2. In the food industry as thickening, gelling, emulsifying, and whipping agents.

3. In wound dressing .

4. In agriculture as plant growth promoters

5. Removal of harmful metal ions

6. Treatment of industrial wastes

7. Decolorization of dye house water

8. In cosmetics as moisturizing agent and in hair care

9.In retention of flavors

10. As a fining agent in beverages

11.   As a food preservative

12.  As fat trappers

 13. In inhibition of infection of bacteriophages

thanks for this post

Sir
I have some enquirers regarding your 'Prawn Shell' project
1. You have mentioned that prawn shell would be effective to remove the harmful metal ions, Does it indicate the removal of toxins from body acting as antioxidant or something like that?
2. It works as 'Fat trapper'.  How does it work to reduce the harmful effect of fat from body? Where does it keep the fat residue for metabolism after trapping from the blood? Is it effective to trap all kind of fat?
3. Does it work to trap the fat accumulated in different organ? For an example: Fatty liver

This is very true that, in Bangladesh Prawn shell processing is a big potential sector from which we can make lot of foreign currency. We should think about such issues for solvency of our country.

Thanks Satabdi for your queries.
Ans.
1. Chitosan can remove heavy metals from any liquids specially from water and is now used in many water treatment plants. Research is going on to remove toxins from  our body fluids by using chitosan.

2. Not actually from the blood. If anybody take chitosan with fat rich food, then chitosan may form cheate with fat molecules and thus resist the digestion and hence absorption of fatty acid in blood. Then body will use its stored fat to generate energy and ultimately decreases the possibility of storing fat  in different parts of the body.

3. Mentioned in step 2.
