Investors go for profit-booking in large cap stocks

The market ended marginally higher Monday with declining turnover as opening hype of the day's session slowing down later part amid profit-booking in large cap stocks.

The free-float based index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange --- DSEX ended at 4,137.93 points, gaining 14.02 points or 0.34 per cent. However, DS30 comprising the blue chips, went down by 7.11 points or 0.46 per cent to close at 1,523.28 points.

The total turnover value on the DSE amounted to Tk 5.22 billion, going down by 11.2 per cent from previous session's two-week high value.

"Volatility continued throughout the session over profit booking in large cap scrips against re-positioning in micro cap scrips," IDLC Investments, said in its regular market analysis.

"Investors were seemed to be more active in generating quick return and indecisive for long term positioning," the merchant bank said.

Meanwhile, scrip-wise swings were vigilant as 73 out of 293 traded scrips posted more than 4.0 per cent change of their respective prices, said the investments bank.

However, price increase in most of the bank scrips made this sector to be highest gainer amid major sectors, the merchant bank added.

"The market opened with high this morning with fluctuations within a wide range of 4123-4175 points, but stocks traded cautiously making the turnover down by 11.45 per cent," stated LankaBangla Securities.

"Several of the external fears, plagued with market, are taming down gradually," said the stock broker.

Banking sector rallied, helping the DSEX move up marginally by 14.02 points and topped with turnover significant increase in turnover 73.0 per cent, said the stock broker

The gainers took a modest lead over the losers as out of 293 issues traded, 143 advanced, 131 declined and 19 remained unchanged in the prime bourse.

Activities decreased on the prime bourse. A total of 0.130 million trades were executed with 113.02 million shares and mutual fund units were trading volume.

The market capitalisation of the DSE stood at Tk 2,619.73 billion against Tk 2,627.50 billion in the previous session.

All the major sectors ended in red except Banks which gained 2.42 per cent after remaining dormant for a long time. Most of the issues from the sector - 28 banks (out of 30) moved up on the day.

The other big sectors ended lower - telecommunications retraced the most with 2.42 per cent loss. NBFIs, pharmaceuticals and fuel and power were down by 1.17 per cent, 0.69 per cent and 0.37 per cent respectively.

Besides, textile sector was also in the top gainers' queue with 0.82 per cent gain having major dominance in turnover, accounted for 12.55 per cent of total turnover value.

Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company became the top turnover leader with shares worth Tk 206.83 million changing hands followed by Heidelberg Cement, United Airways, GrameenPhone and JMI Syringes and Medical Devices.

BD Autocars was the day's highest gainer, positing a rise of 10 per cent while Meghna Condensed Milk was the day's worst loser, slumping by 7.36 per cent.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended marginally higher with its Selective Category Index gained 36.57 points to close at 8,075.12 points.

Gainers beat losers 107 to 106, with 15 issues remaining unchanged in the port city bourse that traded 13.33 million shares and mutual fund units' turnover worth Tk 440.98 million.
