 Security weaknesses resulted in Nasa losing secret computer codes used to control the International Space Station and hackers in China gaining “full functional control” over some of the US space agency’s most critical systems.

Sensitive data relating to spacecraft development, staff computer passwords and support systems for manned and unmanned space missions have been lost, stolen or compromised as part of continuing problems with cyber-security at Nasa.

The revelations, made before a congressional sub-committee by Nasa’s Inspector General, Paul Martin, reveal a shocking lack of attention to IT security at the space agency, which during 2010 and 2011.
