What is the best option for teaching grammar? In context or in isolation?
As far as I have experienced teaching grammar in isolation seldom helps L2 learners. In many of the cases they get afraid of the grammatical terminologies used by the instructor. Very often they find it boring and tiresome. However, some of the students may produce correct sentences using those grammatical rules but, fails to do the same in conversation or descriptive writing.
On the other hand, teaching grammar in context provides L2 learners with lots of interesting, meaningful, real language samples and encourages them to notice their structure and form. They can practice the target language in the classroom where they can easily see their involvement. Students can learn with enjoyment.
