An Institutional Repository is an online focus for collecting, preserving, and disseminating information in digital form for the intellectual output of an institution.
“A university-based institutional repository is a set of services that a university offers to the members of its community for the management and dissemination of digital materials created by the institution and its community members. It is most essentially an organizational commitment to the stewardship of these digital materials, including long-term preservation where appropriate, as well as organization and access or distribution.
DSpace (
www.dspace.org) is a Digital Repository Software, created as a joint project of MIT Libraries and the Hewlett-Packard Company, and publicly released in November 2002 as Open-Source Software. The DSpace Digital Repository software is freely available as open source software from Source Forge (
www.sourceforge.net/projects/dspace) under the terms of the BSD distribution license. Open source software DSpace is available for anyone to download and run at any type of institution, organization, or company (or even just an individual). Users are also allowed to modify DSpace to meet an organization’s specific needs. The specific terms of use are described in the BSD distribution license. DSpace is one of the open source software platform to store, manage and distribute the collections in digital format.
