Bangladesh goes panoramic on Google Street View

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced launch of the service at a hotel in Dhaka on Thursday.

Bangladesh is the 66th country to feature on Google Street View.

Now users of smartphones with internet connection can find their destinations on the devices using the service.

Google Street View provides 360-degree or panoramic street and site views.

Officials of Google Inc., USAID and Bangladesh government’s Access to Information (a2i) project were present at the launch.

Quader said internet users from any corner of the world could now see multi-dimensional images of selected areas of Bangladesh through Google Street View only two years after Google had started work on its project in the country.

“It (Bangladesh on Google Street View) is a silent revolution in the information technology sector under the leadership of the prime minister (Sheikh Hasina). She is its architect and her adviser Sajeeb (Ahmed) Wazed Joy is its vanguard,” he said.

The minister hoped the service would benefit Bangladesh’s tourism, trade, commerce and other sectors.

Google Bangladesh officials said they on Thursday launched street view trackers and wireless backpacks which would add multi-dimensional images even of the walkways to Google Street View.

Access to Information Project Director Kabir bin Anwar said launch of the Google service was a reflection of the government’s pledge to build a ‘Digital Bangladesh’.

Google Public Policy Director for Asia and the Pacific Ann Lavin said the ‘new Street View’ would project Bangladesh from a ‘different perspective’.

Images of busy Dhaka streets to beautiful and attractive places can be found on Google Street View, he said, adding foreign tourists would be drawn to Bangladesh because of the service.

Google Street View was first launched in the United States in 2007
