To the parents who proudly smack their child’s “Student of the Month” sticker on their car bumpers for others’ admiration, prepare to be amazed. While most kids spend their childhoods playing with friends and wreaking havoc on the home, some truly exceptional ones skipped those steps and have created businesses, written symphonies and solved complex mathematical problems instead. Check out this list of some of the world’s most brilliant and gifted individuals who have made enormous strides and accomplishments all before becoming a teenager.
Farrell Wu, although he’s barely a teenager, He has been named as one of the smartest kids in the world by Business Insider, and earned a perfect score while participating in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) in 2012. While most boys his age have backpacks filled with simple geometry worksheets, 12-year old Wu can solve math problems that would cause most adults to stumble. Wu began solving math problems just after his first birthday, and was able to trade stocks when he was just three years old. The child genius is now studying algebra at the undergraduate level with a mentor from the University of Michigan. He plans to pursue investment banking when he’s older.
Giuliano Stroe may look like an ordinary kiddo when wearing a shirt, but the Romanian ten-year-old is actually one of the world’s youngest bodybuilders. He began lifting weights when he was only two years old, and has since graced the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records for his unmatchable feats. Straw has established a record for quickly walking on his hands with a heavy ball held between his legs. YouTube provides him with a fantastic medium to share his talents, garnering Stroe fans and viewers from all over the world. Although the eight year old Stroe is significantly stronger than his peers, he still does the same things “normal” children do, like watching cartoons and drawing. Assuring others that Giuliano indeed works out on his own volition, his father has said that “[Giuliano] is never allowed to practice on his own, and if he gets tired we go and play.”
Ryan Wang is a music prodigy who recently played piano at the 2013 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition. Oh yeah, and he’s five. While a number of children have demonstrated their musical talents and been deemed musical prodigies throughout the ages, Wang might be the most adorable. When he was a toddler, Wang played on an electric guitar. At the age of four, his mother took him to formal lessons. In no time, Wang had mastered 18-page concertos, quickly surpassing the musical talents of other children his age. Since he’s still so young, the world will have to wait to see how Wang’s talents play out.
Akrit Jaswal, although he’s only 20, he is already a practicing physician and has been working in the field for more than a decade. From infancy, Jaswal’s parents knew he was something special. He began walking at an early age, talked before the age of one and was said to have been reading Shakespeare when he was five. When Jaswal was seven, he successfully performed a surgery for a family who couldn’t afford healthcare for their daughter. The surgery branded Jaswal as a local medical genius in his hometown in India. At the age of 12, Jaswal became the youngest student to be admitted to medical school in India. Jaswal is now studying to get a master’s degree in applied chemistry.
Priyanshi Somani began studying mental maths at the age of six. In 2010, at age eleven, Somani was the youngest participant at that year’s Mental Calculation World Cup. Not only did she win the competition, but to date she is also the only participant who achieved 100% accuracy in addition, multiplication and square roots. Somani is the daughter of rich businessman Satyen Somani. Her feats as a human calculator have earned her recognition in both the Guinness Book of World Records and the Limca Book of World Records. Aside from calculating complex mathematical equations, Somani enjoys chess and table tennis.
Christopher Paolini is best known for writing the Inheritance Cycle, which consists of three lengthy novels including Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance. Though Paolini is no longer a child, the gains he made during childhood are cool enough that he had to be part of this list. Paolini grew up in Paradise Valley, Montana, where he was home schooled for the duration of his childhood. After graduating at the age of 15, Paolini began writing the Inheritance series. Although childhood success as an author is incredibly rare, Paolini became a New York Times bestselling author at the age of 19, with the second publishing of his first book Eragon. The book would later be turned into a feature film released in 2006, directed by Stefen Fangmeier. Paolini is now in his thirties. He still lives in Montana.
Taylor Ramon Wilson, although he’s barely old enough to drive a car, he is both a nuclear scientist and a science advocate. Born in Texarkana, Arkansas in 1994, Wilson was always intrigued by rockets and space science. As a kid, he hung the periodic table of elements in his room and within a week he had memorized the entire chart. At the age of 14, Taylor became the youngest person in the world to produce a nuclear fission. Since then, he has won numerous awards for his ideas and achievements in the field of science. At TED 2013, Wilson presented a number of his ideas on building small underground nuclear fission reactors. Members of the scientific community received his ideas well.
