What your eyes say about your health

Just like your teeth, even your eyes reveal your general well-being. Here's how you can determine your ailment from the condition of your eyes.

- If you have bloodshot eyes: It means you may have high blood pressure. The broken vessels in the eye indicate that the high blood pressure has caused the vessels in the retina to kink, which makes them burst. This can lead to strokes or heart attacks. To lower your blood pressure, avoid sodium in your diet and eat more potassium-rich foods.

- If you have dry eyes: Constant drying up of eyes and sensitivity to light would mean that the problem is more serious. It could be an autoimmune disease like Sjogren's. This disease causes white blood cells to attack moisture-producing glands, which leads to drying of the eyes.

- If your eyes itch: You could have an allergy. Your body is producing histamines, which causes the itchiness. Along with your eyes, it can also affect your nose, throat, skin etc.

- If you have yellow eyes: You could be suffering from jaundice. This yellow colour is a result of having a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. This happens when the liver isn't properly processing red blood cells.
