Popularity & cult of personality
« on: December 30, 2010, 04:28:49 PM »
Before starting my topic, I want to apologise in advance because this post deals with political stuffs and may hurt the emotions of the people having 'hardcore' political view points. Yet I wanna share my feelings with you as I think this post may let you think about your  perception regarding the administrative figures of the country... Firstly, the new 'phrase' should be understood, as this is uncommon to many of us. CULT OF PERSONALITY (in easy terms) is, something far beyond POPULARITY. It's an influential person's charismatic or sometimes propogandiac persona. The formative leaders tend to HAVE this. And dictators tend to USE this. The formative leaders like our Bangabondhu had this. A good example of this is, when our country got liberted and Bangladesh Bank was established, the bank needed gold for liquidity. At that time when Bangabondhu asked the mass to contribute their gold belongings, they paid heed to his words and literally gave them. Even Hitler had this thing in himself. He could motivate with his 'enlighted' speechs that motivated 8 million people to join nazi party, starting with only sixty. Another wide user of this cult of personality is a dictator Alberto Pinnoche, of Chili. He used wide propogandas that, only HE can let the Chili people out of 200% inflation, although he could not do anything!
But when a mediocre person who hadn't much sacrificed for his state or people and most importantly when the country is at the state of democracy, is hyped up for his political nexus, the country ironically faces political and most importantly democratical imbalance. That person may automatically have popularity for his nexus with the influential figure. But the person should 'cement his place' among the immortals, who sacrificed actually a lot. Like- Rajiv Gandhi, a person having a rich political pedigree has always been a popular figure for being the grandson of Nehru. But he did a lot for the farmers and for the youth. That's why congress somewhat uses Rajiv Gandhi's facevalue still today to influence the youth.
Now I won't write much as perhaps you may have understood my thoughts. Now my main motive is to, give you people a simple message and that is blindly believe the original democratic cult of personality and believe the new ones with a lot of evaluation and then give them places to your heart.

Shajib, with all due respect, mentoring is not quite adequate with cult of personality or popularity. Mentoring enables a person to achieve practical and theoritical knowledge in any field by a veteran of that respective field. For example- Sonia Gandhi is mentoring her son Rahul Gandhi to become the next actual 'heir' of the Nehru dynasty. Now my point was that, the persons relating to a high profile political family should not use their power and political fame to make themselves a personality who has the authority to make any big administrative decisions by their own. For example- Sonia Gandhi has been a big and influencial figure since taking the leadership of congress in 1999, but she never shows ONE MAN SHOW. Have you ever heard Sonia Gandhi took personal attention giving a job to a person on humanitarian grounds? Perhaps no. You see because she doesn't misuse her family fame. You may think that, giving a job to the needed thru personal attention is not bad. Yes, it's not bad but the democracy requires some chain of command and code of conduct..
Our country has always had a family nexus oriented politics and democracy. Actually, in my sense it's not bad. But when the political families use their respective originators cult of personality in their own political carrier, corruption would definately occur and ruin the entire country. E.g- you know Raj Thakrey? He is the son of Balasaheb Thakrey, the leader of Shivsena, an extremist hindu political party. Balasaheb is considered a very influential and thus respected figure to the Maharastrian people as he speaks and (sometimes unnecessarily) fights for their core existence. Now, Raj Thakrey has been using his father's cult of personality to have a luxurious life and ironicaly using the nexus tag to get revenges on his foes. So, I see cult of personality the root problem of any country's politics...
