Would u please answer me?
shibli:
Should Grammar teaching be implicit, or explicit as far as effective English language learning of the students is concerned? Can anyone answer me?
nusrat-diu:
Dear Sir,
I think, most of our students are reluctant to study grammar. U'll also find some students, who adore grammar and if u teach them grammar implicitly, they will pay less attention than others. However, if we can choose interesting study materials those are taken from real life, all of our students will be motivated to learn grammar for improving their English. So, I'll prefer implicit grammar study for my students.
Nusrat
shibli:
I totally agree with you.
shibli:
In the general academic context of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL), the Grammar- Translation Method (GTM) had been practiced for a long time in the English Language Teaching (ELT) context of Bangladesh most probably since the introduction of the curricula of the general education in the sub-continent laid down by the British imperial government during the rule of the British empire. However, let us go through a comment made by an expert:
"The ultimate outcome of the GTM in the ELT situation had been proved unsatisfactory by all means. The total ELT process of GTM could not make the most of the students proficient users of English communicatively achieving equal competence in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. In the cases of professional and other communicative grounds most of the students having been learned English in GTM fail to communicate successfully resulted from the immediate forgetting of the deductively memorized grammatical rules right after the pass of the examinations."
kulsum:
Dear Shibli Sir,
The students we are dealing with they have learned grammar for twelve years in Grammar Translation Method and we all know where they are!
So what i feel and also do take a diagnosis test from their writing and decide what are the major lackings/mistakes and then decide what items should be dealt with and obviously that should be more application based(what nusrat madam says choosing interesting materials) rather than definition and example. Tense and Subject verb agreement are the two areas where our students are weakest.
Best regards
Umme Kulsum
