if you want to identify real world phenomena, qualitative research (inductive approach) is needed. For quantitative research, we test impact of some variables on another variable. All variables must come from some theories. Theoretical contribution is a major part in academic research (not always in industry research). Theory is a standardized principle on which basis we can explain the relationship of some variables(e.g. Hypothesis).
