Strip the wire with wire strippers. There will normally be one "loose" wire (unshielded) and two insulated, or shielded, wires. The bare one will be the earth or ground wire, the others are left signal and right signal.
Side-by-side cables have an additional bare wire, but are otherwise the same as single cables.
