Mathematics and English are two vital disciplines which can ensure success of your life. If you have good command in Mathematics you will be treated as a talented student. And your proficiency in English will reflect how smart you are. Unfortunately, in Bangladesh, these two subjects are not taught with proper care at all levels of education. As a result, most of the students of our country remain very weak in Mathematics and English which hampers their career.
With few exceptions, in our schools and colleges, there is scarcity of good teachers of Mathematics and English. Consequently, the majority of our students are suffering from fear of these two subjects. They start to avoid these two subjects in their daily routine of study and try to manage the pass marks in these two subjects in the Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations. Moreover, after completing their college life most of the students say “good bye” to these two subjects. In the long run, it creates a permanent phobia of these two subjects in the students’ mind. They start to forget what they have learnt in their schools and colleges which results in a disastrous situation at the Tertiary level.
When the students enter universities we find them full of confusion of their ability in Mathematics and English. Their level of confidence in these two subjects goes to the deep down. They start feeling alien to see all the text books written in English. They face challenges to see about ten quantitative courses in the syllabus of BBA. And the phobia came back in double strength. As a result, his/her academic performance goes poor which directly hampers his/her career.
Now the questions come in my mind: Are these two subjects that difficult to face? Is it really impossible to get a good command in Mathematics? Is getting proficiency in English difficult like a rocket science? What can we do to overcome the situation?
To overcome the circumstances, you may pursue the following FOUR strategies:
- Recognize that Mathematics and English are two major hurdles to get a successful career
- Realize that these two hurdles are surpassable
- Convince yourself that you can achieve it
- Practice regularly with hard determination
Punch Line: Everyone has certain limitations. Each limitation is surpassable.
