Our eyes are our windows to the world. Most of us take our eyes for granted and do not take good care of them. Other than regular checkups, good exercise and sufficient sleep below are mentioned some tips to keep those eyes healthy and protected.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Here are a few routine practices that can help protect your eyes and keep them healthy: -washing eyes with cold water keeps them healthy

Wash eyes with cold water and use a fresh towel – As soon as you get up and just before going to bed wash your eyes with cold water. Even doing it during the day is advisable. This keeps the eyes cool, fresh and clean. This also prevents dark circles and puffiness. Also always preferably use a fresh towel while wiping the eyes; this prevents dirt and bacteria already existing on a used towel from entering the eye.
Always wear goggles\sunglasses – Your eyes need constant protection from the sun rays, harsh lights, breeze, dust, pollution, etc. For the same reason always have a pair of sun glasses on you especially while travelling. Also use a pair of goggles while swimming to protect the eyes from chlorine as it can dry the eyes and cause a burning sensation.always remove eye make-up at the end of the day
Remove eye make-up - After a long and tiring day most of us simply flop on the bed without removing our makeup. But it is essential especially to remove the eye makeup. Eye makeup when left on, can enter the eye balls and scratch the cornea or cause infections in the eye. You can also dab rose water on your eyes before you sleep to cool your eyes.
Look at a distance – Reading for long or working on the computer screen for hours causes eye strain which creates the burning sensation and redness in the eyes. To prevent it, you must get into the habit of looking at far off distances every half an hour of working on the PC or reading a book. This gives the lens in our eyes exercise and reduces strain to the eyes.
Keep AC vent down – Whether it is in our office, cars or at home keep the AC vent down and not right in your face. The cold air can dry out the moisture in our eyes.
walking barefoot on wet green grass helps the eyesWalking barefoot on wet green grass – It is said the walking barefoot on wet grass either early in the morning or in the evening keeps the eyes fresh and cool. There happens to be a connection between the foot nerve endings and the eyes. But there is no concrete research to back this tip.
MANAGE YOUR DIET: Food for your sight!
Here are dietary additions that can do to help keep your eyes healthy with all the necessary nutrition:-

Vitamin A – A diet rich in vitamin A helps dry eyes and protects the cornea which is essential for good vision. Foods that are rich in Vitamin A include sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, broccoli, eggs, papayas and mangoes.
Substitute salt – High sodium in the food can increase blood pressure which can damage the blood vessels that are present in the eye. So substitute salt with natural  eating fish can help keeping the eyes healthynatural herbs and spices. Also check the sodium or salt content in packaged foods which you consume.
Fish and Eggs– Fish and eggs are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are proven to reduce ‘dry eyes syndrome’. Also a recent study has found that people who eat fatty fish at least once a week and one egg daily are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an eye disease that gradually causes vision impairment and blindness in senior adults.
Red onions - Red onions contain very important phytochemicals that work as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that help to prevent the growth of tumors and therefore help in prevention of cataract in the eye.
So add these few practices and foods in your daily routine to improve vision and sight. Let not anything steal the twinkle from our eyes!
