Machine learning expert Alan Stuart Edelman will mentor Bangladeshi young programmers to develop new technologies through Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Edelman, father of the programming language Julia, is a professor of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.
He made a keynote presentation at a session titled “AI and Machine Learning” at BASIS SoftExpo at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka, according to a press release issued Saturday.
Edelman said: “The dependency on Google is not good for the young developers. They should focus on developing service and products from own innovations. Julia will support the developers to implement their innovation in programming.”
He focused on comparative feature between Google’s Tensor Flow and Ju.
He said: “Bangladeshi youth are very talented. They will show excellence if they are given proper mentorship and training program. MIT and Julia Computing will support local organizations in this regard.”
Mustafa Jabbar, the posts, telecommunications and information technology minister, was the chief guest at the program, which was moderated by former BASIS president Habibullah N Karim.
University of Asia Pacific Vice-Chancellor Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury and Mascagni senior expert Prof Samdani spoke at the panel discussion while BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir made the welcome address.
Jabbar said Prof Edelman’s Dhaka trip was a milestone for Bangladesh’s technology sector. “Bangladesh experienced a tremendous growth in the ICT industry in participation of people from all walks of lives. Youths lead the innovations here. They have interest in new technologies like Machine Learning.”
Prof Jamilur said the machine learning was not a new concept in the world, but some initiatives on artificial intelligence had started in Bangladesh only recently.
“We should focus on developing programming language in Bangla to make machine learning easier,” he added.
Prof Samdani said machine learning was the frontier of future technologies.
BASIS President Kabir informed the session that BASIS had engaged Prof Eledman as an adviser for development of the technology sector in Bangladesh.
Besides, there were held 11 sessions including – Women in ICT, Problem Solution through IoT, Going to Collaboration on the third day of the exposition.
