TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

On 10th September 2020, Daffodil International University (DIU) hosted an online international symposium on Hospitality and discussed hospitality in a turbulent world with COVID-19. Senior representatives and scholars from the hospitality sector from home and abroad graced the occasion by their presence and fruitful discussion. They addressed critical issues facing hospitality Education in Bangladesh and worldwide.

The event also announced the forthcoming launching of the Daffodil-Oxford centre of Excellence (DOCEH), a new specialist learning institute to be located in DIU.

The proposed Daffodil-Oxford Centre of excellence will provide golden opportunities to students willing to choose a lucrative career in hospitality and tourism industry at home and abroad on successful completion of this course at this specialist learning institute.

But many of the prospective students may not be aware of the nature and contents of this course. Hence the meaning and significance of the terms ‘Hospitality’ and ‘Tourism’ and its importance to customers, economies and employees are briefly presented for them.

Tourism and Hospitality

What is Tourism?

Tourism is both an industry and concept. As a concept tourism refers to travelling to a destination either within a person’s own country or outside his or her own country for business or leisure purposes. More specifically, the world tourism organization defines the word “Tourism” as the practice of travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year and not less than 24 hours for leisure, businesses and other purposes. As an industry, tourism consists of businesses that sell products or services to these travelers who are also known as tourists.

Common examples of tourism businesses include:

 Cruise Liners
 Hotels
 Tour guides
 Amusement parks
 Travel agents etc

Tourism has become an increasingly popular choice in recent years and for good reasons. It is both a fun and rewarding career that offers several noteworthy benefits.

Reasons to start a career in tourism:

1. Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries contributing over $7.6 trillion to the global economy each year. Tourism is definitively a thriving and healthy industry.
2. It allows you to travel: Securing a career in tourism allows you to travel all over the world. As a tour guide, for example, you may organize tours so that guests can tour popular tourist destinations.

What is hospitality?

Like tourism, hospitality is both a concept and industry. As a concept, hospitality refers to the relationship between a guest and a host. When you visit a friends home for dinner he or she acts a host and you are the guest. Hospitality is the concept that governs relationships. To succeed, hospitality businesses must foster strong and meaningful relationships with their guests. Failure to do so will likely result in guests leaving you for a competitor’s product and services.

Common examples of hospitality businesses include:

 Restaurants
 Cafes
 Hotels
 Bed and Breakfasts
 Clubs
 Event Planning

How Tourism and Hospitality industries differ?

Hospitality is a larger industry that actually includes many tourism businesses. Because tourism businesses rely on strong and meaningful relationships with their customers to succeed, they are often classified as hospitality businesses as well. The difference between the tourism and hospitality industries is that former is a smaller industry that specifically focuses on travelling activities, whereas the latter is a larger industry that encompasses all businesses in which strong and meaningful customer relationships are required.

Why is the hospitality industry important?

Historically, the concept of hospitality is about receiving guests in a spirit of goodwill-especially strangers from other lands. Hospitality implies warmth, respect and even protection, it builds understanding and appreciation among cultures. The Latin word “hospos’ is formed from ‘hostis’ which means ‘stranger’ or ‘enemy’. The related words are host, hospital, and hotel.

Today hospitality also refers to a segment of service industry that includes hotels, restaurants, entertainment, sporting events, cruises and other tourism related service. As such hospitality industry is important not only to social but also to economies, customers and employees.

Importance of hospitality to economies

1. The travel and tourism sector currently accounts for 10.4% of worlds GDP. Projections say that 72 million jobs will be added to the tourism and hospitality sector over the next 10 years, and the industry itself will grow 10%. But at present COVID-19 now may cause some disruption.

Revenue Generation

2. Hospitality generates revenue for local economies directly when tourists spend money in hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues. It also helps economies indirectly, because tourists purchase retail goods, pharmacy items and locally made souvenirs and crafts. In addition tourism can stimulate the building of infrastructure such as roads, public transportation etc.

Also important economically are the jobs created by the industry. In 2017, the hospitality industry accounted for 313 million jobs worldwide which translates to 9.9% of total employment and 20% of all global net jobs created in the last decade. Hospitality also supports jobs in arts and culture industries, keeping theaters and arts thriving.

3. Importance of hospitality to Customers:
Hospitality provides essential services i.e. (lodging and food) for travelers, whether they are on the move for reasons of necessity, leisure or luxury. Hospitality is a major factor for every vacation and business trip and is thus important to individual customers and to businesses. Some hospitality companies such as entertainment venues and restaurants serve locals as well as tourists. Restaurant industry has been a tremendous boom in recent years. Serving customers well is the primary aim of the hospitality business, which should focus on creating high quality environments and services and on hiring excellent employees who treats customers with warmth, empathy and professionalism.

4. Importance of Employees:

Besides being a high job creator, this sector provides a rewarding career track for professionals. It provides a huge range of job opportunities, from event manager to Hotel Manager to facilities asset manager and beyond. Entrepreneurs start their own restaurants and boutique hotels. Professionals have the chance to work in glamorous settings around the world.

5. Hospitality and Tourism may bring the following benefits to a country.

3. Generates income
4. Foreign exchange earnings
5. Foreign direct investment
6. Preserves traditional industries
7. Develops diversification
8. Builds infrastructure

6. Realizing the importance of the subject, DIU created the department of Tourism and Hospitality management. When I was dean of the faculty of Business and Economics I had to give enough time in the recruitment of faculties and curriculum development and other management aspects of the new department. Under the dynamic leadership of the Head of the department, Mr. Mahbub parvez, Associate professor and other bright and devoted faculties, it was a great beginning.

The department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, DIU has come a long way forward with improvement in all areas of the subject. Interested students with good academic background are welcome.

7. Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on world global tourism: UN opinion

The UN secretary general Antonio Gueterres said in a policy briefing and video address on August 25, 2020 that tourism is the third largest export sector of the global economy, behind fuels and chemicals, and in 2019 it accounted for 7% of global trade. It employs one in every 10 people on earth and provides livelihood to hundreds of millions more. It allows people to experience some of the world’s cultural and natural riches and brings people closer to each other, highlighting our common humanity. The UN chief added that tourism global industry has been devastated by the corona virus pandemic with $320 billion in lost exports from January, 2020 through May 2020 which is three times what was lost during the year 2009 at the height of the last financial crisis.

According to the policy briefing, export revenues from tourism could fall by $910 billion to $ 1.2 trillion in 2020 that could reduce global GDP by 1.5% to 2.8%. In addition to tourism jobs that are at risk, jobs in associated sectors including food services, small businesses, likely closure of many cultural heritage will lead to huge fall in revenue and employment. Many more industries have been affected dramatically by the pandemic. According to TIU, the world’s largest travel operator, there has been 98% drop in turnover in the past quarter.
