Features of Community Policing
Community policing is based on the assumption that police officers should partner with the community to solve problems that generate repeat calls for service. In order for this to happen, officers must be given the discretion to make independent decisions and act as advocates on behalf of the neighborhoods they serve. Citizens will be a part of the problem defining process as well as the problem solving process. The focus is on quality of life, decreasing fear of crime, and cleaning up neighborhoods. Theoretically, confronting quality of life issues will lead to less citizen fear and an increase in informal social control, which will eventually lead to a decrease in crime.
