Special Issue on Business Systems in the Age of the Cloud
Cloud-based business models represent a major disruption in today’s competitive environment. Companies (both established and start-ups) are beginning to shape their business strategy using cloud based offerings. Governments and Not-for-Profit organizations are also leveraging the cloud. Cloud computing is a computing paradigm where services and data reside in scalable data centres, and those services and data are accessible by any connected device over the Internet. It permits the migration path of various forms of SOA and service models - software, storage, infrastructure, platform etc. It also raises a broad range of issues from technically-oriented to organization-oriented issues related to cloud evolution and migration. It invites consideration of new models of governance for systems, service and organization. It also invokes legal, national, and social theme consideration. Cloud computing is attractive to many CIOs because it gives them a seat at the table as an architect for new business models.
CIOs are helping businesses use cloud computing to manage risks related to demand, innovation, efficiency, scaling, and control. Cloud Computing embraces concepts such as infrastructure as a service, software as a service and platform as a service. These offerings include services for workflow facilitation, application design and development, deployment and hosting services, data integration, and management of software. There has been significant interest in Cloud Computing among the practitioner community with major research activities being conducted in corporate R&D labs. The academic and theoretical challenges surrounding the successful development, adoption and diffusion of the technology have yet to be comprehensively explored and this special issue of EJIS on “Cloud Computing†calls for original papers exploring a wide range of topics relating to
Cloud Computing. With cloud computing, an enterprise’s product-based and firm-centric framework for developing and deploying applications and systems can be transformed to a global, distributed, servicecentric model (where “service†means IT as a service that a firm can use). To understand
clouds and make investment decisions, companies have to focus on cloud strategy, not technology. The dialogue needs to be moved away from technical issues to user-related issues (Iyer B., Henderson J., Preparing for the Future: Understanding the Seven Capabilities of Cloud Computing, MIS Quarterly Executive Vol. 9 No. 2 / Jun 2010).
