Apple hit a market cap of $1 trillion on Thursday — and hung onto the record valuation at market close — as the iPhone maker became the first publicly traded U.S. company to reach $1 trillion.
The stock gained 2.92 percent during trading after a strong fiscal third-quarter earnings report earlier this week to close at $207.39. It reached the trillion-dollar milestone just before noon ET with a share price of $207.05, based on a recently adjusted outstanding share count of 4,829,926,000 shares.
Investors had previously been looking for a share price of $203.45 to push Apple across the finish line in the race to $1 trillion, but the company's hefty stock buybacks moved the threshold higher Wednesday.
"I think it just speaks to just how powerful the Apple ecosystem has become over the last few decades," GBH Insights analyst Dan Ives told CNBC after the historic market move. "This is not the end, that they hit $1 trillion. I view this as just kind of speaking to a new stage of growth and profitability."
Ives credited the company's growing software and services revenue with driving the valuation. The catch-all category — which includes the App Store, AppleCare, Apple Pay, iTunes and cloud services — posted record revenue of $9.55 billion for the June quarter.
"It just speaks to the vision that [co-founder Steve Jobs] and now [CEO Tim Cook] have had in making sure Apple isn't just a hardware company," Ives said.
Amazon had also been approaching the threshold, surpassing $900 billion in market value in July. Apple had quite the head start, though, hitting $900 billion in November.
Many on Wall Street noted earlier this week that Apple was firmly on the path to $1 trillion. Aswath Damodaran, professor of finance at New York University's Stern School of Business and the so-called dean of valuation, said the stock is still cheap even at $1 trillion.
As of Thursday's close, Apple had gained 22 percent in 2018 and more than 30 percent in the last 12 months.

দেশে ‘তালপাখা’ ব্র্যান্ডের নতুন ল্যাপটপ তৈরি হচ্ছে। হাই-টেক পার্কে দেশের একটি তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি পণ্যনির্মাতা প্রতিষ্ঠান নতুন এ ল্যাপটপ তৈরি করছে। সাশ্রয়ী মূল্যের এ ল্যাপটপে শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য বিশেষ সুবিধা থাকবে। ডাক, টেলিযোগাযোগ ও তথ্যপ্রযুক্তিমন্ত্রী মোস্তাফা জব্বার গতকাল বৃহস্পতিবার বঙ্গবন্ধু আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলন কেন্দ্রে ল্যাপটপ মেলা উদ্বোধনের সময় এ তথ্য জানান।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, নতুন ল্যাপটপ তিনি দেখেছেন এবং নির্মাতাদের সঙ্গে কথা বলেছেন। এটি ফেলে দিলেও ভাঙবে না। এটি ট্যাব হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যাবে। এর দাম হাজার দশেক টাকা হতে পারে।
মোস্তাফা জব্বার বলেন, ‘আমি কল্পনাও করতে পারিনি যে একটি ডিভাইসে টাচ স্ক্রিনসহ এ পরিমাণ সুযোগ-সুবিধা থাকবে আর এত কম দামে তৈরি হতে পারে। এ থেকে বোঝা যায়, আমাদের সম্ভাবনা প্রতিদিন বাড়ছে। ল্যাপটপের বর্তমান চাহিদা বিবেচনা করলে এ দেশের বাজার এখন ডিভাইস প্রস্তুতকারী কোম্পানিগুলোর কাছে লোভনীয়। ইতিমধ্যে অনেক বিদেশি কোম্পানি দেশে ল্যাপটপ সংযোজনের চিন্তাভাবনা করছে। আর দেশের দুটি কোম্পানি ল্যাপটপ প্রস্তুতও করছে।
আগামী দিন হবে ল্যাপটপ, ডেস্কটপ ও ট্যাবের। কারণ, আগামী দিন শিক্ষার। দেশে চার কোটি শিক্ষার্থী রয়েছে, তাদের সবার প্রয়োজন হবে ল্যাপটপের—বলেন ডাক, টেলিযোগাযোগ ও তথ্যপ্রযুক্তিমন্ত্রী।
দেশি তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি পণ্যনির্মাতা প্রতিষ্ঠান ওয়ালটন ল্যাপটপ তৈরি করছে। এর আগে টেশিস দোয়েল ব্র্যান্ডের ল্যাপটপ তৈরি করেছিল।
এক্সপো মেকারের আয়োজনে তিন দিনের ল্যাপটপ মেলার উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে মন্ত্রী আরও বলেন, একসময় বাংলাদেশ প্রযুক্তিতে পিছিয়ে থাকলেও এখন অনেক এগিয়ে। কারণ প্রযুক্তি নামের সঙ্গে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নাম জড়িয়ে আছে। তাঁর কারণেই আজ ডিজিটাল বাংলাদেশ এবং সাড়ে আট কোটি ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহারকারী। এ ছাড়া যত ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহার বাড়বে, তত ল্যাপটপ ট্যাবের চাহিদাও দিন দিন বাড়বে। কম্পিউটার, ল্যাপটপ বলতেই একসময় সবাই বুঝত বিশেষ কিছু। কারণ বিশেষ মানুষেরা এগুলো ব্যবহার করত। কিন্তু বর্তমানে ল্যাপটপ, ডেস্কটপ, ট্যাব হয়েছে সবার বন্ধু। কাজের জায়গায় বিভিন্ন ডিভাইসের প্রয়োজনীয়তা বেড়েছে। বেড়েছে ল্যাপটপ, ডেস্কটপ ও ট্যাবের গুরুত্ব।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘ল্যাপটপ মেলা শুধু কেনাবেচার মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ নয়, এটি এক্সপেরিয়েন্স জোন হিসেবেও ব্যবহার হয়। এই মেলার কারণে যে সচেতনতা তৈরি হচ্ছে, সেগুলো নিয়ে আমাদের এগিয়ে যেতে হবে। কেননা আগে ল্যাপটপ বিক্রি তেমন ছিল না, এখন রূপান্তর ব্যাপকভাবে হয়েছে। আমাদের পরিধি বিস্তৃত হচ্ছে, বৈচিত্র্যও আসছে। মনিটর পিসি হতে পারে, সে ধারণায় ছিল না। আর এখন দেশে বসেই সুপার কম্পিউটার নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়, যা এক সময় ¯স্বপ্ন ছিল।’
