For two reasons, primarily:
1.Claiming a government-granted monopoly on the use of hashtags would have likely inhibited their adoption, which was the antithesis of what I was hoping for, which was broad-based adoption and support — across networks and mediums.
2.I had no interest in making money (directly) off hashtags. They are born of the Internet, and should be owned by no one. The value and satisfaction I derive from seeing my funny little hack used as widely as it is today is valuable enough for me to be relieved that I had the foresight not to try to lock down this stupidly simple but effective idea.

Ancient civilizations did their most impressive work with water. Hydraulic engineering is where the Egyptians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans and others devoted the most resources by far and they had some impressive achievements to display.
You will find a lot of information in this Quora blog: Pre-Modern Water Engineering. In there you will learn about qanats, sakia, hypocausts and how natural water flow can be used to do useful work, from pumping water, to producing salt.
We would be truly impressed by the sheer scale of the work involved in the construction of qanats, but also with their simplicity and effectiveness as a solution to bring water from the aquifier to the surface. A Persian invention, quite obscure, but also very important.
One particularly interesting example from an engineering viewpoint is the Tunnel of Eupalinos, a 1036m long aqueduct built in the 6th century BC in Samos and kept in use for 1000 years. The fascinating thing about this is the way that Eupalinos managed to make the two sides of the excavation meet, not to speak of the accuracy of the tunnelling work itself.
Apart from water engineering, ancient weapon technology provides some fascinating feats. Among them, I am impressed by the sheer extravagance of the ultimate siege engine of the antiquity: the Helepolis.
What we found impressive, apart from the size, weight and number of men that manned it, is that it was armored with iron plates on 3 sides and that its enormous wheels could be steered with an enormous capstan, moved by 200 men.
Another cool gadget ancient siege engineering had was Polybolos, a repeating ballista. Medieval Chinese armies made extensive use of the repeating crossbow, aka the "chu-ko-nu". The former operated on a different principle (chain drive) than the latter (lever operated).

Well, let's take a step back and think about the sync problem and what the ideal solution for it would do:
There would be a folder.
You'd put your stuff in it.
It would sync.
They built that.
Why didn't anyone else build that? I have no idea.
"But," you may ask, "so much more you could do! What about task management, calendaring, customized dashboards, virtual white boarding. More than just folders and files!"
People don't use them at all. They just want a folder. A folder that syncs.
"But," you may say, "this is valuable data... certainly users will feel more comfortable tying their data to Windows Live, Apple's MobileMe, or a name they already know."
No, not a single person on Earth wakes up in the morning worried about deriving more value from their Windows Live login. People already trust folders. And Dropbox looks just like a folder. One that syncs.
"But," you may say, "folders are so 1995. Why not leverage the full power of the web? With HTML5 you can drag and drop files, you can build intergalactic dashboards of statistics showing how much storage you are using, you can publish your files as RSS feeds and tweets, and you can add your company logo!"
No! Most of the world doesn't sit in front of their browser all day. If they do, it is Internet Explorer 6 at work that they are not allowed to upgrade. Their stuff is already in folders. They just want a folder. That syncs.
That is what it does.

Tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd unveiled on Wednesday the second smartphone powered by the its own Tizen operating system, its latest bid to increase the popularity of its own software ecosystem.
Samsung said the Z3 will go on sale in India on Oct. 21 for 8,490 rupees. While this is more expensive than the 5,700 rupees launch price for its predecessor, the Z1, the new phone offers better hardware including a faster processor, a higher quality screen and improved cameras.
The world's top smartphone maker is trying to reduce its dependence on Google Inc, whose Android operating system powers Samsung's flagship Galaxy smartphones. The company has also launched other products this year powered by Tizen, including the Gear S2 smartwatch and premium televisions. A person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters in June Samsung plans to launch more handsets running on Tizen this year.

‘রামগরুড়ের ছানা/হাসতে তাদের মানা,/হাসির কথা শুনলে বলে,/ “হাসব না না, না না”।’ সুকুমার রায়ের বিখ্যাত ছড়া। কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে, সুকুমার রায় কাকে দেখে এ ছড়া লিখেছিলেন? এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর পাওয়া খুবই কঠিন। উত্তর খুঁজতে খুঁজতে মুখের হাসিই উবে যাওয়ার জোগাড়! হঠাৎ মনে হলো, স্বয়ং সুকুমারের মুখচ্ছবিটাই দেখি না কেন! গুগলের সার্চ অপশনে ‘সুকুমার রায়’ লিখে এন্টার বাটন প্রেস করা হলো। ইমেজ অপশনে ক্লিক করতেই গুগল মহাশয় হাজির করল সুকুমারের বেশ কিছু ছবি। সেগুলো ঘেঁটে অবশেষে বিখ্যাত এই শিশুসাহিত্যিকের মোটে তিনটি ছবি পাওয়া গেল। মজার বিষয় হলো, তিনটি ছবিতেই সুকুমার বড্ড গম্ভীর। মুখে হাসির ‘হ’-ও নেই। তখন আবারও ওই রামগড়ুরের ছানা মাথায় টোকা দিল!
কেবল সুকুমার নন, অমন ‘সমস্যা’ ছিল তাঁর আমলের প্রায় সবারই। একটু খেয়াল করলেই আবিষ্কার করবেন, পুরোনো দিনে ছবি তোলার সময় মানুষের মুখে কেন জানি রাজ্যের বিষণ্নতা ভর করত, চোখে থাকত অজানা আশঙ্কা, চোয়ালে ইস্পাতের কাঠিন্য। অতীতে মানুষ ছবি তোলার সময় হাসত না কেন? এ প্রশ্ন কেবল আপনার কিংবা আমার নয়; গুগলও বলছে, এই প্রশ্ন করতে করতে মানুষ তার ‘কান’ ঝালাপালা করে দিয়েছে!
এবার তাহলে একটু ইতিহাস ঘাঁটা যাক। সুকুমার রায়ের জন্ম ১৮৮৭ সালে। আর যুক্তরাজ্যে ঢাকঢোল পিটিয়ে আলোকচিত্র ধারণের চল শুরু হয় ১৮৩৯ সালের দিকে। রানী ভিক্টোরিয়ার আমল ছিল সেটা। অতএব সুকুমারের জন্মের সময় আলোকচিত্র-প্রযুক্তির বয়স ছিল প্রায় ৫০। সে সময়েও মানুষ ছবি তোলার সময় মুখ গম্ভীর করে বসে থাকত। ফলে সুকুমার কিংবা তাঁর আশপাশের বয়সের মানুষেরাও ছবি তোলার সময় ‘রামগরুড়ের ছানা’ বনে যেতেন। এসব দেখেই সুকুমার ছড়াটি লিখেছিলেন কিনা, কে জানে!
তবে এটা জানা গেছে যে ১৯ শতকের আগ পর্যন্ত ছবি তোলার সময় মানুষ তাদের মুখ ‘বাংলার পাঁচ’ করে রাখত। ইতিহাস ঘাঁটলেই এর প্রমাণ মেলে। এদিকে, যে ভিক্টোরিয়ানরা আলোকচিত্র বা ছবি তোলার চল শুরু করেছিলেন, তাঁরা কিন্তু মোটেও বেরসিক ছিলেন না। এরও ভূরি ভূরি প্রমাণ মেলে ইতিহাস কিংবা সে সময়ে লেখা বইপত্রে চোখ বোলালে। বিখ্যাত ইংরেজ লেখক জেরোম কে. জেরোমের কথাই ধরা যাক। ১৮৮৯ সালে তিনি লিখলেন বিখ্যাত রম্য উপন্যাস ‘থ্রি মেন ইন আ বোট’। উপন্যাসের একটা জায়গায় কলেরা নিয়েও রসিকতা করতে ছাড়েননি লেখক। অথচ কয়েক দশক আগেও কিন্তু লন্ডনের হাজারো মানুষ মারা গিয়েছিল কলেরা রোগেই। আজও সেই উপন্যাস সারা বিশ্বে সমাদৃত এর দুর্দান্ত ও কালোত্তীর্ণ রসিকতার জন্য। এবার লেখক জেরোম কে. জেরোমের ছবি খুঁজে দেখুন, শেষ বয়সের একটি-দুটি বাদে সব ছবিতেই মুখে সেই ‘প্রয়োজনীয়’ গাম্ভীর্য!
লেখার এ পর্যায়ে এসে, আমাদের সেই ‘কমন’ প্রশ্নের একটা ঝাপসা উত্তর মিলছে। ওই যে ‘প্রয়োজনীয় গাম্ভীর্য’! বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন, পুরোনো দিনে ছবি তোলার সময় ওই গাম্ভীর্য প্রয়োজনীয়ই ছিল বটে। কারণগুলোর মধ্যে একটি হলো— সে সময় ছবি তোলার বিষয়টিই ছিল দুর্লভ, ব্যয়বহুল ও জটিল এক ‘শখ’। ছবি তোলা-তুলি তখন কেবল অভিজাত শ্রেণিরই ব্যাপার-স্যাপার ছিল। ফলে ‘আদার ব্যাপারি’ মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণির কাছে সে সময় ছবি তোলা মানে ছিল জাহাজের ডেকে বসে হাওয়া খাওয়ার মতো বিলাসী ব্যাপার! অনেক কাঠখড় পুড়িয়ে ক্যামেরার সামনে না হয় দাঁড়ানো গেল, কিন্তু একবারের চেষ্টায় তা সফল হবে তো? তখন এমন দুশ্চিন্তাও কাজ করত সবার মনে। হাসতে গিয়ে বা নড়াচড়া করতে গিয়ে ছবিটা ভেস্তে গেলেই ‘মহামূল্যবান’ শখের দফারফা। আবার এদের মধ্যে অনেকেই ছিলেন, যারা হয়তো জীবনে একবারই ক্যামেরার সামনে দাঁড়ানোর কপাল নিয়ে জন্মেছিলেন! আর ছবি তোলার প্রযুক্তি চালু হওয়ার আগে ধনীরা নিজেদের ছবি আঁকিয়ে নিতেন শিল্পীদের দিয়ে। এই ব্যয়বহুল বিষয়টি মধ্যবিত্তরা কখনো স্বপ্নেও দেখত কিনা সন্দেহ। তাই ছবি তোলার ব্যাপারটা তাদের কাছে ছিল শিল্পীকে দিয়ে পোর্ট্রেট করিয়ে নেওয়ার মতোই মহামূল্যবান এক শিল্প!
কেবল আর্থিক সংগতির বিচারেই নয়, যান্ত্রিক বিষয়-আশয়ও ছিল এর আরেকটি কারণ। সে সময়ের ক্যামেরাগুলোর আচরণ ছিল গন্ডারের সহোদরের মতোই। কেতাবি ভাষায় ক্যামেরার ‘এক্সপোজার টাইম’ ছিল দীর্ঘসূত্রতার সার্থক উদাহরণ। আলোকচিত্রী হয়তো ক্যামেরায় ক্লিক করলেন, ছবি তুলতে আসা মানুষেরা চোয়াল শক্ত করে, চোখের পলক না ফেলে, দম আটকে বসে আছেন। এর মাঝে হয়তো পিঠের দিকটায় একটা মশা কামড়াচ্ছে, তারপরও সেটা নিয়ে মাথা ঘামানোর সময় নেই! গলা শুকিয়ে কাঠ, একটা ঢোক গেলা দরকার, সে প্রয়োজনটাও হয়তো গিলে ফেলতেন অনেকেই। তারপর এক সময় ক্যামেরা তার কাজ শেষ করত, ফ্রেমে বন্দী হতেন ‘আমজনতা’। সেই ছবিই তাদের জন্য হয়ে থাকত কালের সাক্ষী! জীবনানন্দ দাশের কবিতার সঙ্গে পরিচয় থাকলে, শব্দ একটু এদিক-সেদিক করে হয়তো তাঁরা আবৃত্তি করতে পারতেন, ‘সময়ের কাছে এসে সাক্ষ্য দিয়ে চলে যেতে হয়/কী কাজ করেছি আর কী ‘‘ছবি তুলেছি’’!’
পুরোনো দিনে ছবি তোলার সময় মানুষ কেন হাসত না?-এ প্রশ্নের তো একটা মোটামুটি চলনসই উত্তর মিলল; কিন্তু তারপরও গুগল আরেকটা প্রশ্নের মুখোমুখি হতে হতে ক্লান্ত। সেটা হচ্ছে— পুরোনো দিনের ছবির ওই মানুষগুলো কী দুঃখী ছিলেন? আমাদের এখনকার হাসিমুখ সেলফিগুলোর সঙ্গে তুলনা করলে তো এক কথাতেই জবাব দেওয়া যায়, অবশ্যই অতি দুঃখী ছিলেন! কিন্তু আসলেই কী তাই? বিশেষজ্ঞদের দাবি, পুরোনো দিনের মানুষেরা ছবি তোলার সময় ‘সিরিয়াস’ থাকতেন, তাই বলে দুঃখী ছিলেন, এমন দাবি করা যায় না! তবে প্রশ্নটা এখন বুমেরাং হয়ে আমাদের দিকেই আসছে— আমরা যে প্রতিদিন হাসি হাসি মুখে এত সেলফি তুলছি, আমরা কী সুখী? বিশেষজ্ঞদের দাবি, দুঃখ-কষ্ট আড়াল করার অন্যতম মুখোশের নাম সেলফি!
সুকুমারের ছড়া দিয়ে শুরু, শেষ করা যাক রোকনুজ্জামান খান দাদাভাইয়ের ছড়া দিয়ে। (সেলফির হাসিমুখগুলো দেখে আপনি যদি মুখ গোমড়া করে রাখেন, তাহলে এই ছড়া আপনার জন্যই!)

লেখার এ পর্যায়ে এসে, আমাদের সেই ‘কমন’ প্রশ্নের একটা ঝাপসা উত্তর মিলছে। ওই যে ‘প্রয়োজনীয় গাম্ভীর্য’! বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন, পুরোনো দিনে ছবি তোলার সময় ওই গাম্ভীর্য প্রয়োজনীয়ই ছিল বটে। কারণগুলোর মধ্যে একটি হলো— সে সময় ছবি তোলার বিষয়টিই ছিল দুর্লভ, ব্যয়বহুল ও জটিল এক ‘শখ’। ছবি তোলা-তুলি তখন কেবল অভিজাত শ্রেণিরই ব্যাপার-স্যাপার ছিল। ফলে ‘আদার ব্যাপারি’ মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণির কাছে সে সময় ছবি তোলা মানে ছিল জাহাজের ডেকে বসে হাওয়া খাওয়ার মতো বিলাসী ব্যাপার! অনেক কাঠখড় পুড়িয়ে ক্যামেরার সামনে না হয় দাঁড়ানো গেল, কিন্তু একবারের চেষ্টায় তা সফল হবে তো? তখন এমন দুশ্চিন্তাও কাজ করত সবার মনে। হাসতে গিয়ে বা নড়াচড়া করতে গিয়ে ছবিটা ভেস্তে গেলেই ‘মহামূল্যবান’ শখের দফারফা। আবার এদের মধ্যে অনেকেই ছিলেন, যারা হয়তো জীবনে একবারই ক্যামেরার সামনে দাঁড়ানোর কপাল নিয়ে জন্মেছিলেন! আর ছবি তোলার প্রযুক্তি চালু হওয়ার আগে ধনীরা নিজেদের ছবি আঁকিয়ে নিতেন শিল্পীদের দিয়ে। এই ব্যয়বহুল বিষয়টি মধ্যবিত্তরা কখনো স্বপ্নেও দেখত কিনা সন্দেহ। তাই ছবি তোলার ব্যাপারটা তাদের কাছে ছিল শিল্পীকে দিয়ে পোর্ট্রেট করিয়ে নেওয়ার মতোই মহামূল্যবান এক শিল্প!
কেবল আর্থিক সংগতির বিচারেই নয়, যান্ত্রিক বিষয়-আশয়ও ছিল এর আরেকটি কারণ। সে সময়ের ক্যামেরাগুলোর আচরণ ছিল গন্ডারের সহোদরের মতোই। কেতাবি ভাষায় ক্যামেরার ‘এক্সপোজার টাইম’ ছিল দীর্ঘসূত্রতার সার্থক উদাহরণ। আলোকচিত্রী হয়তো ক্যামেরায় ক্লিক করলেন, ছবি তুলতে আসা মানুষেরা চোয়াল শক্ত করে, চোখের পলক না ফেলে, দম আটকে বসে আছেন। এর মাঝে হয়তো পিঠের দিকটায় একটা মশা কামড়াচ্ছে, তারপরও সেটা নিয়ে মাথা ঘামানোর সময় নেই! গলা শুকিয়ে কাঠ, একটা ঢোক গেলা দরকার, সে প্রয়োজনটাও হয়তো গিলে ফেলতেন অনেকেই। তারপর এক সময় ক্যামেরা তার কাজ শেষ করত, ফ্রেমে বন্দী হতেন ‘আমজনতা’। সেই ছবিই তাদের জন্য হয়ে থাকত কালের সাক্ষী! জীবনানন্দ দাশের কবিতার সঙ্গে পরিচয় থাকলে, শব্দ একটু এদিক-সেদিক করে হয়তো তাঁরা আবৃত্তি করতে পারতেন, ‘সময়ের কাছে এসে সাক্ষ্য দিয়ে চলে যেতে হয়/কী কাজ করেছি আর কী ‘‘ছবি তুলেছি’’!’
পুরোনো দিনে ছবি তোলার সময় মানুষ কেন হাসত না?-এ প্রশ্নের তো একটা মোটামুটি চলনসই উত্তর মিলল; কিন্তু তারপরও গুগল আরেকটা প্রশ্নের মুখোমুখি হতে হতে ক্লান্ত। সেটা হচ্ছে— পুরোনো দিনের ছবির ওই মানুষগুলো কী দুঃখী ছিলেন? আমাদের এখনকার হাসিমুখ সেলফিগুলোর সঙ্গে তুলনা করলে তো এক কথাতেই জবাব দেওয়া যায়, অবশ্যই অতি দুঃখী ছিলেন! কিন্তু আসলেই কী তাই? বিশেষজ্ঞদের দাবি, পুরোনো দিনের মানুষেরা ছবি তোলার সময় ‘সিরিয়াস’ থাকতেন, তাই বলে দুঃখী ছিলেন, এমন দাবি করা যায় না! তবে প্রশ্নটা এখন বুমেরাং হয়ে আমাদের দিকেই আসছে— আমরা যে প্রতিদিন হাসি হাসি মুখে এত সেলফি তুলছি, আমরা কী সুখী? বিশেষজ্ঞদের দাবি, দুঃখ-কষ্ট আড়াল করার অন্যতম মুখোশের নাম সেলফি!
সুকুমারের ছড়া দিয়ে শুরু, শেষ করা যাক রোকনুজ্জামান খান দাদাভাইয়ের ছড়া দিয়ে। (সেলফির হাসিমুখগুলো দেখে আপনি যদি মুখ গোমড়া করে রাখেন, তাহলে এই ছড়া আপনার জন্যই!)

Growing up there were certain family rules in place that had to be followed to the letter. Number one being I always had to be in the middle. Number two being my pet chicken also had to accompany me. And lastly number three being while playing monopoly Pall Mall and Mayfair belonged to me and that all involved with the game were to turn a blind eye every time my hands wandered over to the bank.
There were stages of my life where spending time with parents were cherished and certain times when it was avoided at all costs. I like to think I have turned wiser now. (Somewhat wiser that is.) So I understand how important those bonding sessions were. It gave me an insight into their lives. Personally I would never let my children cheat in Monopoly. That is serious business.
I used to think my dad was the greatest gamer in the world. I remember sitting behind him while he played video games and staring in awe as he dispatched enemies effortlessly. My primary objective back then was to surpass his skills.
Another time I remember fondly was when I was in the phase of listening to really bad pop music. He simply said, “Let me show you some real music.” He turned up some progressive rock in full volume and we sat back just listening to the brilliance blasting out of the speakers. I remember thinking now that is real music. I do have my own taste of music now but progressive rock is still the truest form.
Bonding time with my mother was different with less blood and gore involved. It was a sober affair altogether. Tea parties she called it, sometimes with real tea in cups and sandwiches. I watched her bake donuts where I would be given the all-important task of cutting the dough into a donut shape with a lid.
Other times when I was in charge it was just empty cups, which she would pretend to drink, then proceed to tell me how amazing it was. I patted myself on the back for that. A gourmet masterchef at the age of five. And I didn't even have to make anything. Let's see the other kids try to match that!
She left for the US when I was four for about six months. But she sent me Tweety bird tea cups with the earnest promise that we will one day use them for our tea parties. That promise saved my dad from many a sleepless nights because he did not have to console me about her absence. I was too giddy about the cups.
Nowadays bonding sessions are different. I do not watch my dad play video games instead he is the one who hovers over my shoulders. My patience for tea parties are gone and replaced by slightly more adult activities. Monopoly games have been upgraded into card games. The monopoly money is still being used though, only this time as chips for the poker games.
I know those days are more or less over but the board games are there in a neat box for when I become a parent. Who knows I might even let my kids cheat! (As long as that means I can too.)

Faculty Sections / Circular railway in Dhaka

The government is planning to build a circular rail network around Dhaka to ease the pressure on city’s roads, said Railways Minister Mujibul Haque today.
Currently it is at the phase of feasibility study, he told reporters at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital. “The prime minister has already directed us in this regard”.
The minister did not mention any tentative date for the project or any further specifics.
Dhaka, currently the second least livable city in the world, has been facing acute traffic condition problems on its streets for long.
The minister was talking at a press meet on development and future strategy on the country’s railway organised by Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).
