Women and Gender Studies / Performativity
« on: February 19, 2020, 09:48:16 AM »
As per Judith Butler, 'Gender is a performance'.
According to Simon de Beauvoir, 'One is not born, rather becomes a woman'.

How does culture create a woman? What is the connectivity between gender construction and performance?

Women and Gender Studies / Mushrooms by Sylvia Plath
« on: February 19, 2020, 09:44:20 AM »
Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly

Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.

Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.

Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,

Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,

Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We

Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking

Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!

We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,

Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot's in the door.

Women and Gender Studies / Woman Work - Poem by Maya Angelou
« on: February 19, 2020, 09:40:17 AM »
Let's have a look:
I've got the children to tend
The clothes to mend
The floor to mop
The food to shop
Then the chicken to fry
The baby to dry
I got company to feed
The garden to weed
I've got shirts to press
The tots to dress
The can to be cut
I gotta clean up this hut
Then see about the sick
And the cotton to pick.

Shine on me, sunshine
Rain on me, rain
Fall softly, dewdrops
And cool my brow again.

Storm, blow me from here
With your fiercest wind
Let me float across the sky
'Til I can rest again.

Fall gently, snowflakes
Cover me with white
Cold icy kisses and
Let me rest tonight.

Sun, rain, curving sky
Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone
Star shine, moon glow
You're all that I can call my own.

Women and Gender Studies / Phenomenal Woman BY MAYA ANGELOU
« on: August 08, 2018, 11:35:35 AM »
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

English / "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" by Adrienne Rich
« on: May 23, 2017, 09:35:43 AM »
Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen,
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree;
They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.

Aunt Jennifer's finger fluttering through her wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.
The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band
Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer's hand.

When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie
Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.
The tigers in the panel that she made
Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid.

Michael Jordan
One of his main principles is that there’s no excuse for not trying. The first setback came when he didn’t make the varsity basketball team in sophomore year, because he was only 5’9” and his taller classmate Leroy Smith had taken the last spot on the team. Vowing to himself never to be in the same position again, he made a habit to practice daily – without fail. Hitting a growth spurt and reaching 6’3” he made the team the following year and never looked back. He went on to win two gold medals in the Olympics, and winning the NBA’s most valuable player 5 times in his career, it was his determination and practice that gave him the greatest success.

English / Women in the Masculine world
« on: April 20, 2017, 01:29:30 AM »
Beauvoir says:
The woman herself recognises that the universe as a whole is masculine; it is men who have shaped it, ruled it and who still today dominate it, as for her, she does not consider herself responsible for it; it is understood that she is inferior and dependent; she has not learned the lessons of violence, she has never emerged as a subject in front of the members of the group; enclosed in her flesh, in her home, she grasps herself as passive opposite to these human-faced gods who set goals and standards. English / One is not born, but rather becomes, woman.
« on: April 03, 2017, 09:38:36 PM »
One is not born, but rather becomes, woman.
                                                      Simon de Beauvoir
If we take Beauvoir's statement as a ground, some questions immediately come to our mind: What makes one a woman? How does one become a woman? What are the parameters that create a woman? Is this biological determinism that makes a woman? Is it cultural one that creates a woman? To answer these questions we have to look into the socio-religious-cultural setting of  a community, for one is gradually becoming a woman because of  her community's socio-religious-cultural standards mostly set by the prevalent notions, ideologies, customs, social systems, family structure, food habits, dress code, values, norms, rituals, beliefs, class, creed, caste, ethnicity,  race and religion, which all are unfortunately patriarchally biased.

English / "Eleven major stereotypes of Feminity" ???
« on: March 31, 2017, 10:33:39 PM »
Eleven major stereotypes of feminity as presented by male writers and critics:
1. Formlessness
2. Passivity
3. Instability
4. Confinement
5. Piety
6. Materiality
7. Spirituality
8. Irrationality
9. Compliancy
10. Witch
11. Shrew
Quoted from Moi's Sexual/Textual Politics, 33.
No doubt, all the stereotypes are gendered and socio-culturally constructed by patriarchy.

"After all, I am her mistress. She is basically loyal.
It’s just that she remembers how she came running
Each evening, when she heard his step;
How she lay at his feet and looked up adoringly
Though he was absorbed in his paper;
Or, bored with her devotion, ordered her to the kitchen
Until he was ready to play."

"Despite sleepless night, before dawn the girls again walk together,
men's mouths getting watery when they pass and spit,
the girls avoiding as many as they can,
eating nobody's food, wearing nobody's clothes, walking, walking on." Nasrin

De Souza is one of the most renowned poets who raises voice against male chauvinism. I am interested to read Souza but I don't have any text unfortunately. May I request you to help me if it is possible for any one among us?
