Do computers cause eye damage?
You're sure to have childhood memories of your mother yelling, "Don't sit too close to the TV or you're going to ruin your eyes!" The fear that she instilled in you has probably carried over into your adult life - only now, it's the hours spent at work in front of the computer that have you convinced you're doing real damage to your eyes.
The truth is, there is no good evidence that staring at a computer will cause permanent eye damage. However, computers can cause many uncomfortable eye-related symptoms such as eyestrain, dry eyes, headache, fatigue, difficulty focusing, blurred vision, and shoulder and neck pain. Although these symptoms typically go away when you're done work, they can greatly disrupt your productivity and satisfaction while you're at work.
You might be surprised to learn that the cause of these problems is more likely a result of the conditions around your computer, rather than the computer itself. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to optimize your working conditions to better suit your eyes. Try the following tips.
•   Take regular breaks. You can do this by closing your eyes or focusing on a distant object for a few minutes. If you can, get out of your seat and take a walk or shift your focus to a task that does not require looking at the computer screen.
•   Position the computer screen properly. You should be 20 to 28 inches away from your computer screen. The top of the screen should be just below your eye level, and slightly tilted away from you at a 10° to 20° angle. This means your eyes will be gazing down at about a 15° angle. Keeping a downward gaze reduces stress on your eye muscles.
•   Get an eye exam. Your eye-related issues may be due to an underlying vision problem that gets worse with computer use.
•   Clean your computer screen regularly. The static charge on the screen can cause a build up of dust, which may irritate your eyes.
•   Prevent dry eyes. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air or try using lubricating eye drops before using the computer and throughout the day. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about choosing appropriate eye drops.
•   Adjust for adequate lighting. Try balancing the brightness of the computer screen with that of the room. Adjust desk lamps to avoid glare on the screen. Adjust the blinds or curtains to control glare from the window throughout the day. Remember to readjust the lighting when reading text in a book or on paper.

Anger could be a blessing
February 19, 2018, 10:39 PM IST Economic Times in The Speaking Tree | India, Lifestyle | ET
By Maulana Wahiduddin Khan
Once a man asked the Prophet, “O Prophet, give me a master advice by which I may be able to manage all the affairs of my life.” The Prophet simply replied, “Don’t be angry” (Sahih al-Bukhari). It means, ‘Don’t be angry even when provoked.’ If someone keeps himself from becoming a victim of anger, then how can this habit become a master principle for his life? The moment of anger is a high moment in the life of a person. Anger is not just anger, it also creates brainstorming.
Anger releases high energy in the angry person. It is a high moment for the individual concerned. If at this moment, he is able to divert this “anger energy” to the positive side, it will lead him towards healthy activities from negative activities. Silence is a positive response when dealing with anger.
The Prophet’s teachings contain the importance of silence. Here are the exact words of a Hadith, ‘When you are angry, keep silence’ (Musnad Ahmad).
How does silence help? When you become angry due to some provocation, you should remain silent. Maintaining this silence will help in bringing about a change in the thinking process of the mind. At the time of anger, keeping silence is like changing gears of the mind. When a person is angry and he instantly becomes silent, the mind then takes a new pace. Instead of running to the negative side, it starts running in the positive direction and the result will be a well-thought-out action instead of a rash harmful reaction.

The magic of leapfrog
Adam Krumwiede, EVP at Gotham Direct
July 27, 2011

Leapfrog. It's a children's game and also the burning desire of every marketer: How do you tap the power of innovation to propel the business past leaders who dominate the category? With client expectations higher than ever, that's the challenge presented by today's aggressive response, engagement, conversion and efficiency standards.
A great ad, PR or media idea can have a significant impact on business. Successfully leapfrogging the competition requires alignment of resources with a great idea. To develop successful multi channel campaigns, some creativity is required before the development of the creative; you must look before you leap.
So, where to begin?

Start with Communications Planning (CP). CP focuses on solving clients' marketing problems and growing business while leveraging whatever communications resource is deemed necessary. CP shifts the emphasis from delivering messages to mass audiences towards understanding how people receive and respond to marketing communications. An essential part of the process, CP clearly defines the source of growth.

Don't mistake tactics for strategy. Taking a cue from Dictionary.com: Strategy is the utilization, during both peace and war, of all of a nation's forces, through large-scale, long-range planning and development, to ensure security or victory. Tactics deal with the use and deployment of troops in actual combat. The correlation to marketing communications is clear. I've often proposed that we separate strategic brand planning from the annual tactical media planning and implementation process. Too often strategic planning is shortchanged for tactical planning when the two are combined.

Know the customer — better. What are the various ways they can be segmented? What does the purchase pathway look like? What influences purchase behavior? Probing these dynamics sheds light on how to use individual channels to influence behavior. Given the corporate distractions that exist, marketing partners have a responsibility to represent the customer, their needs and desires within the organization.

Search for real insights. Relevant insights emerge from examining the consumer, the brand, competitors or the market itself. They sometimes come to light when existing data is reviewed from a new direction. An insight is not a statement of the obvious truth; an insight changes the way we look at a given paradigm, and insights must be actionable and relevant. Dove's Real Beauty campaign emerged from an insight that fundamentally changed the way Dove viewed and operated in the market. Good insights are hard to find. Cherish them.

Strategize with a clean slate. Put everything on the table. This is hard to do, but it is a must for the team to freely consider different, unique and innovative approaches. The team can't be wed to a 30-second ad or the expensive NASCAR sponsorship with 2 years left on the contract. Save those as issues to navigate once you create the brand's blue ocean. Think holistically about communication solutions that span the range of paid, earned and owned media alike.

Be receptive to ideas. Ideas are the currency of our future. Successful integrated campaigns are organized around a strong idea, not an ad concept or sponsorship. Good ideas can come from any direction/discipline. Question everything, especially authority.
To be successful at leapfrog, look before you leap, and listen to the child within.

Faculty Sections / By product pricing strategy
« on: December 08, 2016, 11:02:54 AM »
By product is something which is produced as a result of producing something else (the main product). Usually, the by products are disposed off and have little value.

But in by product pricing, the by product has significant value and the manufacturer can gain competitive advantage by reducing the price of the main product or recovering some of his expenses by selling the valuable by product.

Example- when meat is processed for human consumption, the by product can be used as food for dog/cat. So the manufacturer can sell it in market to recover some of his expenses say transportation and storage costs.

Faculty Sections / Marketing Myopia
« on: December 08, 2016, 10:53:06 AM »
The marketing myopia theory was originally proposed by Theodore Levitt. The theory states that marketers should look towards the market and modify the company and products accordingly rather than looking towards your own company, its potential and then catering the market. The needs of the market should receive first priority.

Theodore levitt asks a very interesting question as an example for marketing myopia. His question is, if Hollywood were into television rather than movies, wouldnt it have profited more? This is true because as we know the major crowd of hollywood is concentrating into making movies and actually money is more into television.

Thus, if hollywood would have catered to the television market, they would have earned more. And Theodore levitt’s marketing myopia theory has turned right as hollywood has entered television with renowned movie maker twentieth century fox as well as sony televisions and other channels.

Faculty Sections / What Is Narcissism?
« on: January 12, 2015, 11:33:06 AM »
Narcissism describes the character trait of self love, based on self-image or ego.

The word is derived from a Greek myth. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.

In psychology and psychiatry, excessive narcissism is recognized as a severe personality dysfunction or personality disorder, most characteristically Narcissistic personality disorder, also referred to as NPD.

Sigmund Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of all of us from birth and was the first to use the term in the reference to psychology.[1]

Andrew Morrison claims that, in adults, a reasonable amount of healthy narcissism allows the individual's perception of his needs to be balanced in relation to others.[2]

The terms "narcissism", "narcissistic" and "narcissist" are often used as pejoratives, denoting vanity, conceit, egotism or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. Arguably, however, these terms are used to draw parallels between allegations of self-centeredness and Narcissistic personality disorder, rather than toward healthy self-love. Wikepedia

Faculty Sections / Why Do People Use Drugs?
« on: October 06, 2013, 01:14:46 PM »
Why Do People Use Drugs?

One reason often heard from people using drugs is that they do them to feel good. For real, it does feel good because most drugs act directly on the "pleasure center"--the limbic system--in the brain. At this point, it can be considered recreational use. Some might light up a cigarette at a party. They might not consider themselves a "smoker," but they do it to feel good or to "look cool." Someone might smoke pot at their friend's house because they think it could be fun. The problem? Drugs don't care what the reason is. The same effects can occur whether you're drinking to have fun or drinking to forget a problem, whether you're doing drugs to see how they feel or doing them to be one of the crowd.
People do drugs to change the way they feel. Often they want to change their situation. If they're depressed, they want to become happy. If they are stressed or nervous, they want to relax, and so on. By taking drugs, people often think they can be the person they want to be. The problem? It isn't real. You haven't changed the situation; you've only distorted it for a little while. Following are some of the reasons people say they do drugs to feel good or change the situation:

1. Because they want to fit in.
No one wants to be the only one not participating. No one wants to be left out. So sometimes they make bad decisions, like taking drugs, to cover-up their insecurities. They don't think about how drugs can isolate you from your friends and family. They forget to look past that one party to see how things could turn out. Or maybe they just don't see the people around them who aren't using drugs.

2. Because they want to escape or relax.
You'll hear a lot of people saying things like "I'm so stressed, I need to get messed up!" or "Drugs help me relax" or whatever. What they're really saying is "Drinking or doing drugs is just easier than dealing with my problems or reaching out for help." The thing is, the problems are still there when they come down--and not only do they still have to deal with it, they have to deal with it when they're not 100% and feeling guilty or even worse when they're not thinking straight.

3. Because they're bored.
Lots of people turn to drugs for a little excitement because they say there's nothing else to do but watch the same Simpsons' rerun for the tenth time or hang out at the Burger King. But people who make these kinds of decisions usually find out that drugs are ultimately really a waste and painful. Drugs don't change the situation, and they just might make it worse.

4. Because the media says it's cool.
Even though there's an antidrug ad on every minutes and more rock stars and ball players than you can shake a stick at tell you to stay away from drugs, the truth is the entertainment world still manages to make drugs appear very attractive. Kind of like how they encourage people to be really skinny even when they say anorexia is bad. Or when they say you should be super muscular but steroids are bad. But if you're wise, you'll understand that the entertainment world is not the real world, and basing your life on these messages is superficial.

5. Because they think it makes them seem grown-up.
This is one of the weirdest reasons. Think about itWhy would an adult want to use drugs? Probably for many of the same reasons you would consider. The reality is that the most grown-up people out there aren't users. They're too busy living their lives to bother with stuff, like drugs, that will interfere.

6. Because they want to rebel.
Sometimes people turn to drugs not so much for themselves, but to make a statement against someone else, such as their families or society in general. Somehow taking drugs makes them outlaws or more individual. The problem is taking drugs, ultimately, robs these people of their ability to be independent, because it makes them dependent--on drugs and their drug connections.

7. Because they want to experiment.
It's human nature to want to experime
nt. Trying things out helps you decide if they're right for you. But it's also human nature to avoid things that are obviously bad for you. You wouldn't experiment with jumping off Liberty Hall.  The point is, there are a zillion better things to experiment with sports, music, dying your hair, seeing bad movies, eating spicy food...

Superiority complex vs. inferiority complex in children

Dealing with children's behavior may not be that easy for all parents. This depends on the kids and their behavior. Behaviors of children also depend on the environment they grow in. Behavioral traits are present in each and every child in some way or other and hence each and everyone need to handle it in different ways. But when the behavior of a person starts affecting his social presence then it becomes a problem. Here we are talking about children and the same rules apply to them too. A kid being too shy or too smart had its own effects. Most of the child have or suffer from complex either inferior or superior and there is nothing much dangerous about that, unless you let it unattended. If a child suffers from any of the complexes then it's his parents who need to take care of it before it gets too late. Research has shown that after proper training and therapy, kids have shown better and improved results in their behavioral pattern. Moreover parents can't just sit back and allow the inferiority or superiority complexes within their children to dominate on their life. Such complexes basically portray a child's imperfection and incompleteness within.

Though superiority and inferiority complexes sound as if just a few alphabets changed here and there, still they vary completely from each other. Both the complexities are actually end of two edges both not healthy of anyone's behavior pattern. Many children face any of these two complexities and either one of both may not allow a child to live like any other normal children still the dominance persist. Most often when a child has inferior feelings and tries to overcome them, he develops a superiority complex. So before wondering which one is worst , we need to learn more about what both of them are exactly and how they differ from each other.

What is superiority complex

Superiority complex is a feeling where a person tries hard to overcome his inferiority complex. In such cases a child tries hard to be perfect and thus by boasting or in any other way makes a fine attempt of escaping his incapability. What a child exactly does is in regards to seem perfect in front of others they create his own self supreme image which is least bothered with criticism he receives from children around him. Such children are least bothered about others and in an attempt to look perfect present themselves in a worst manner in front of others unlike children with inferiority complex. A child with superiority complex may even hurt others just to prove his superiority. Few qualities found in children with this complex include egocentricity, boastfulness, exaggeration, bluffing, hurtfulness, aggressiveness, criticism and hatred.

What is inferiority complex

Inferiority complex on the other hand is far too different than superiority complex. A child with inferiority complex would not be able to present himself or herself in front of others no matter how hard he or she try. Such children are too shy and regard everyone else other than them to be far off better. Children with inferiority complex never try to speak in public, are too shy and stay as far as possible from making their presence feel. Few qualities found in child with inferiority complex include low self esteem, shyness, feeling of backing out, incompetent, inadequate, disapproval and withdrawal.

Faculty Forum / Family is very important for everyone
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:09:57 AM »
Importance of family

Often people have wondered how, or rather why, is a family important for an individual. This question has especially been put up by people who are living alone, away from their family. The simple answer to the question is that a family plays a very important role in shaping up the personality as well as the life of an individual. A family full of loving and caring members can make your life heaven, while an abusive family can make you see hell on earth. Leaving aside the exceptions, family acts as a safe cocoon for an individual, where he can find love when the whole world has rejected him.

Family members are amongst those few people in this present-day world, who will genuinely feel for you and worry about you. They will always be there for you, to fall back upon, when you have been disillusioned with the outside world. Though at times it feels that they are interfering too much in your life, it’s only because they care for you. They accept you with your mistakes and weaknesses and still love you. You will never ever be able to find a substitute for the love of a mother, a father, a wife, a child or a sibling. Those who are able to understand this, lead a secure life & those who don’t, remain disenchanted with life forever!

Faculty Forum / Effects of Facebook
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:21:05 PM »

Negative effects of facebook on teens who overuse this social media include:

•   Teens who use Facebook frequently may become narcissistic. If you are not already familiar with that term, dictionary.com describes narcissism as an, "inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity." Most likely these are not the character traits you desire for your child.
•   Teens who have a strong Facebook presence may display psychological disorders, such as anti-social behaviors, and mania & aggressive tendencies. An anti-social child often does not consider the effects their actions have on others. This can be quite dangerous, especially during the already-volatile teen years. Perhaps this should be termed the anti social media effect.
•   The Facebook effect is real, but teens who "overdose" on technology daily, and this includes video games too, have higher absenteeism from school and are more likely to get stomach aches, have sleep issues, and feel more anxious and depressed.
•   Middle and high school students, as well as college students, who checked their Facebook once during the 15-minute study time, had lower test grades. Perhaps this is similar to being a distracted driver.
•   During the 15-minute studying time research, those students who checked their Facebook most often also had the lowest rates of reading retention. This probably is not too surprising, but now it is a proven fact, in case you need to tell your kids.

Positive Side Effects of Facebook:

•   Development of a "virtual" empathy which actually affected friends' moods positively, and caused teens to be more empathetic in their everyday lives, as well. It seems that encouraging comments online can put a smile on someone's face and improve moods.
•   Facebook and other social networking sites give shy children a way to socialize which might otherwise be lacking altogether. Hopefully, this virtual training ground can extend into actual face-to-face interactions.
•   Use of Facebook may impact self-esteem in a positive way and allows children to develop their self-identity. Choosing a profile photo, listing likes & dislikes, favorites of this-and-that, quotations, and the like, all "force" your child to become more self-aware.

BBA Discussion Forum / Autism
« on: February 23, 2012, 10:15:18 AM »
Autism is known as a complex developmental disability. Experts believe that Autism presents itself during the first three years of a person's life. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting development of the person's communication and social interaction skills.
People with autism have issues with non-verbal communication, a wide range of social interactions, and activities that include an element of play and/or banter.
Autism (or ASD) is a wide-spectrum disorder. This means that no two people with autism will have exactly the same symptoms. As well as experiencing varying combinations of symptoms, some people will have mild symptoms while others will have severe ones.

Autism Symptoms:
Autism Symptoms vary widely in severity, include impairment in social interaction, fixation on inanimate objects, inability to communicate normally, and resistance to changes in daily routine. Characteristic traits include lack of eye contact, repetition of words or phrases, unmotivated tantrums, inability to express needs verbally, and insensitivity to pain.

What causes Autism?
It remains unclear, but a psychological one has been ruled out. Neurological studies seem to indicate a primary brain dysfunction, and a genetic component is suggested by a pattern of autism in some families. It is largely believed that autism is a genetic disorder that involves several genes related to gene function. However it is unclear to researchers what causes these genes to turn on.
