চার দিনের মাথায় কনটেইনার পরিবহনকারী গাড়িশ্রমিকেরা কর্মবিরতি প্রত্যাহার করেছেন। আজ বিকেল চারটা থেকে এই কর্মবিরতি প্রত্যাহার করা হয়। তবে আজও সকালে দুটি জাহাজ ১ হাজার ৪৩০ কনটেইনার রপ্তানি পণ্য ফেলে বন্দর জেটি ছেড়ে গেছে। এ নিয়ে কর্মবিরতি প্রত্যাহারের আগে তিন দিনে ২ হাজার ৬৩১ কনটেইনার পণ্য রপ্তানি হয়নি।
নিয়োগপত্রের দাবিতে গত বুধবার সকাল থেকে আকস্মিক কর্মবিরতি শুরু করে কনটেইনার পরিবহনকারী গাড়িচালক ও শ্রমিকদের সংগঠন ‘প্রাইম মুভার ট্রেইলার শ্রমিক ইউনিয়ন’। এর ফলে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর ও ডিপোর মধ্যে চলাচলকারী ৮৫০টি প্রাইম মুভার ট্রেইলার গাড়ি চলাচল বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। এসব গাড়িতে করে ডিপো থেকে রপ্তানি পণ্যবাহী কনটেইনার বন্দরে নেওয়া হয়
কর্মবিরতি শুরুর পর প্রতিদিন রপ্তানি পণ্য ফেলে যাওয়ার ঘটনা ঘটলেও আজ শনিবার দুপুরে বন্দর ভবনে গাড়ি শ্রমিক ইউনিয়নের নেতা ও ডিপো মালিকদের সঙ্গে বৈঠকে বসে বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ। বৈঠকে আজ প্রতিটি ডিপো একটি করে নিয়োগপত্র দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত হয়। পালাক্রমে আগামী ২১ মার্চের মধ্যে ডিপোর সব গাড়ির শ্রমিকদের নিয়োগপত্র দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত হয়। এরপরই শ্রমিক ইউনিয়নের নেতারা নিজেরা বৈঠক করে বিকেল চারটা থেকে কাজে যোগদানের সিদ্ধান্ত নেন।
জানতে চাইলে ‘প্রাইম মুভার ট্রেইলার শ্রমিক ইউনিয়নের’ সাধারণ সম্পাদক আবু বকর সিদ্দিকী প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, দাবি মেনে নেওয়ায় কর্মসূচি প্রত্যাহার করা হয়েছে। ডিপো ও বন্দরের মধ্যে গাড়ি চলাচল শুরু হয়েছে।

কর্মসূচি প্রত্যাহারের আগে আজ শনিবার দুপুরে দুটি জাহাজ বুকিং অনুযায়ী রপ্তানি পণ্য না পেয়ে বন্দর ছেড়ে গেছে। এর মধ্যে মালয়েশিয়ার পোর্ট কেলাংগামী ‘এক্সপ্রেস কাবরু’ জাহাজটিতে রপ্তানি পণ্যের ১ হাজার ৩৪২ একক কনটেইনার নেওয়ার কথা ছিল। গাড়িশ্রমিকদের কর্মবিরতিতে ডিপো থেকে কোনো রপ্তানি পণ্যই বন্দরে এনে জাহাজে তুলে দেওয়া যায়নি। অগত্যা বন্দরে থাকা মাত্র ১০০ কনটেইনার নিয়েই ছেড়েছে জাহাজটি। এই জাহাজটির মতো ‘এমভি পেনাং ব্রিজ’ও রপ্তানি পণ্যবাহী ২৫ একক কনটেইনার নিয়ে কলম্বোর উদ্দেশে রওনা হয়েছে। অথচ এই জাহাজেও নেওয়ার কথা ছিল ২১৩ একক কনটেইনার।
জানতে চাইলে পেনাং ব্রিজ জাহাজের স্থানীয় প্রতিনিধি ‘ওশেন নেটওয়ার্ক এক্সপ্রেস’–এর মহাব্যবস্থাপক রবি শংকর দাশ প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, কর্মবিরতির কারণে বেসরকারি ডিপো থেকে রপ্তানি পণ্যবাহী একটি কনটেইনারও আনা যায়নি। কর্মবিরতির আগে বন্দরে যে কয়টি কনটেইনার ছিল সেগুলোই নিয়ে যেতে হয়েছে।
সারা দেশ থেকে রপ্তানি পণ্যের ৮৯ শতাংশ চট্টগ্রামের ১৮টি ডিপোতে এসে জমা হয়। এরপর সেখান থেকে এসব পণ্য কনটেইনারে বোঝাই করে বন্দরে নিয়ে অপেক্ষমাণ জাহাজে তুলে দেওয়া হয়। ডিপো থেকে রপ্তানি পণ্য পরিবহন বন্ধ হওয়ায় এখন শুধু ঢাকার কমলাপুর ডিপো, পানগাঁও টার্মিনাল ও রপ্তানি প্রক্রিয়াকরণ অঞ্চল থেকে পণ্য বন্দরে পৌঁছানো যাচ্ছে, যা দেশের মোট রপ্তানি পণ্যের ১১ শতাংশের মতো।
জানতে চাইলে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর বন্দর ও জাহাজীকরণবিষয়ক স্থায়ী কমিটির সভাপতি নাসির উদ্দিন চৌধুরী বলেন, এই কর্মবিরতিতে পোশাক খাতে অপূরণীয় ক্ষতি হয়েছে। যেসব রপ্তানি পণ্য সময়মতো জাহাজে তুলে দেওয়া যায়, সেগুলো বিদেশি ক্রেতাদের হাতে সময়মতো পৌঁছাচ্ছে না। বিদেশে দেশের ভাবমূর্তির বড় ক্ষতি হলো।

Departments / করোনায় আক্রান্ত হলেন গুগলের কর্মী

সুইজারল্যান্ডে অ্যালফাবেট ইনকরপোরেশনের অধীনে গুগলের এক কর্মী করোনাভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত হয়েছে। গুগলের এক বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়েছে, জুরিখের ওই অফিসে এক ব্যক্তির করোনাভাইরাস পরীক্ষা করা হলে তাতে সংক্রমণের বিষয়টি ধরা পড়ে। বার্তা সংস্থা রয়টার্সের এক প্রতিবেদনে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়েছে।
গুগলের একজন মুখপাত্র বলেছেন, করোনাভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত হওয়ার বিষয়টি ধরা পড়লেও জুরিখ অফিস খোলা থাকবে।
সুইজারল্যান্ডের সরকারি সূত্র বলছে, এ ঘটনার মধ্য দিয়ে সুইজারল্যান্ডে করোনাভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির সংখ্যা ১৫-তে পৌঁছেছে। এ ছাড়া ১০০ জনের বেশি ব্যক্তিকে কোয়ারেনটাইনে (সংক্রমণের আশঙ্কার পৃথক রাখা) রাখা হয়েছে।
বিজনেস ইনসাইডারের এক প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, করোনাভাইরাস ছড়িয়ে পড়ার আশঙ্কায় গুগলের পক্ষ থেকে কর্মীদের ভ্রমণেও কড়াকড়ি আরোপ করা হয়েছে।

ঝিনাইদহের শৈলকুপা উপজেলার দোহারো গ্রামের কিশোরী উন্নতি। বাবা আবু দাউদ শৈলকুপা শহরে রিকশা চালান। মা হামিদা খাতুন অসুস্থ। সাত ভাইবোনের বিশাল সংসার। নুন আনতে পান্তা ফুরানোর মতো অবস্থা। ফুটবলার হতে অনেক কাঠখড় পোড়াতে হয়েছে উন্নতিকে, ‘ফুটবল খেলা আমার কাছে নেশার মতো মনে হয়। ফুটবল ছাড়া এক মুহূর্ত থাকতে পারি না। ফুটবল খেলি বলে এলাকার অনেকে অনেক রকম কথা বলত। প্রতিবেশীরা বলত, মুসলমানের মেয়ে হয়ে হাফপ্যান্ট পরে কেন খেলিস। অনুশীলনে গেলে সবাই হাসাহাসি করত। কিন্তু আমার বাবা-মা সব সময় সমর্থন দিয়েছেন। এ জন্যই এখানে আসতে পেরেছি।’
ছোটবেলায় দোহারো মডেল হাইস্কুলে দড়িলাফ খেলতেন উন্নতি। অ্যাথলেটিকসেও ছিলেন সেরা। স্কুলের শিক্ষক রবিউল ইসলাম উন্নতির দৌড় দেখে ফুটবল দলে নিয়ে নেন। আর উন্নতির বাঁ পায়ের শট এতটা জোরালো ছিল যে প্রথম অনুশীলনেই শিক্ষকদের মুগ্ধ করে। এরপর ২০১৭ সালে বঙ্গমাতা স্কুল ফুটবলে চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয় দোহারো স্কুল। ওই টুর্নামেন্টে উন্নতি হয়েছিলেন সেরা খেলোয়াড়। এরপর জেএফএ কাপ ও বাংলাদেশ গেমসেও অংশ নেন ফুটবলে। প্রতিটি টুর্নামেন্টে ধারাবাহিকভাবে ভালো করে জাতীয় নারী দলের কোচ গোলাম রব্বানীর নজরে পড়েন। এরপর বাফুফের আবাসিক ক্যাম্পে অনুশীলনের সুযোগ মেলে উন্নতির।
২০১৮ সালে বিকেএসপিতে ভর্তি হন উন্নতি। খেলেছেন দিল্লিতে সুব্রত কাপে। খেলেছেন গত বছর ভুটানে সাফ অনূর্ধ্ব-১৫ টুর্নামেন্টে। এবার বঙ্গমাতা ফুটবলে আলো ছড়ালেন। পুরস্কার জিতেও যেন বিস্ময়ের ঘোরে ছিলেন উন্নতি, ‘আমি তো ভাবতেই পারিনি ফুটবল খেলে এত দূর আসতে পারব। এ জন্য রবিউল স্যার, গোলাম রব্বানী স্যারকে ধন্যবাদ দেব।’
জাতীয় দলের কোচ গোলাম রব্বানী উন্নতির এমন পারফরম্যান্সে খুশি, ‘আমি এই টুর্নামেন্টে ওর সব ম্যাচ দেখেছি। আমার চোখে ও সব ম্যাচেই সেরা খেলোয়াড়। এভাবে খেলতে থাকলে খুব তাড়াতাড়ি সে জাতীয় দলে ঢুকতে পারবে।’
এর আগেও বঙ্গমাতা স্কুল টুর্নামেন্টের পুরস্কার নিয়েছেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার হাত থেকে। কালও আবার প্রধানমন্ত্রীর হাত থেকে পুরস্কার নিয়ে খুব খুশি। তা প্রধানমন্ত্রী দেখে কী বললেন? উন্নতি হাসতে হাসতে বলল, ‘মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী আমাকে দেখেই বললেন, তোমার নাম উন্নতি। ভবিষ্যতেও তুমি অনেক উন্নতি করবে, সেই দোয়া করি।’
বাফুফে ভবনে আবাসিক ক্যাম্পে অন্যান্য বয়সভিত্তিক দলের মেয়েদের সঙ্গে নিয়মিত অনুশীলন করছেন উন্নতি। এবার উন্নতির স্বপ্ন জাতীয় দলের জার্সি গায়ে তোলা, ‘আমার এখন একটাই স্বপ্ন সাবিনা আপু, কৃষ্ণা আপুদের মতো জাতীয় দলে খেলার। আশা করি, আমার এই পারফরম্যান্সের ধারাবাহিকতা ভবিষ্যতেও ধরে রাখতে পারব।’

Three is finally set to switch on its 5G network, following delays which will see it launch the service months after rival networks.
The telecommunications firm pledged that 5G would be available by the end of February in 65 locations including London, Manchester, Cardiff, Reading, and Bristol.
While the 5G network was technically already in operation (it began to go live in August last year), its availability was initially restricted to central London and the only way to use it was via their dedicated unlimited Three Broadband service rather than through a standard smartphone contract. Nevertheless the operator claimed their initial customers were still enjoying average speeds of 232Mbps, with a peak of 1.1Gbps: an increase on the 30Mbps achieved with 4G devices.
The firm is the last of the big four UK networks to introduce the next generation wireless technology to smartphones, which was originally due to arrive by the end of 2019.
Three blamed the delays on a number of issues, from acquiring the right planning permissions from landlords to arranging 5G equipment on masts, claiming that these issues forced it to push its target “slightly behind”.
In 2018 Three tried to limit how much spectrum individual networks could buy in an attempt to even the playing field between competitors. In the initial auction it ended up buying less spectrum than the competing networks and spent considerably less money on it than its rivals. Nevertheless it says it will be able to harness a total of about 140MHz across several related radio spectrum bands; one of those includes a 100MHz block of contiguous spectrum in the 3.4-3.8GHz band which is known to be the sweet spot for 5G.
Three also said that those with a 5G-capable handset will be able to access 5G speeds at no extra cost to their existing data plan.
To mark the expansion to smartphones, Three has partnered with Central Saint Martins College to create an immersive 5G experience for London Fashion Week, using spatial audio, haptic feedback, a 46m projection the length of the runway, and an array of aromas. The finale will culminate in an empty catwalk, with a 5G-fuelled digital version of model Adwoa Aboah, who will walk out in the last outfit of the show.
“Today we are celebrating what is possible through 5G with a showcase of our ultra-fast 5G capabilities marking the next step in our 5G journey,” Three chief executive Dave Dyson said. “5G is set to change the world for all of us and we can’t wait for our customers to start experiencing it.”
Rivals EE launched their 5G offering to smartphones in May, followed by Vodafone in July, and O2 in October.

Nationwide municipal elections in the Dominican Republican have been paused just hours after polls opened on account of a technical glitch.
Almost 4,000 municipal positions are up for grabs in the Caribbean state, with more than 7.4 million citizens due to cast their votes.
Four hours after voting began on Sunday, a glitch in the e-voting system used in 18 of the 159 local authorities forced the government to suspend the elections for the first time in history. The affected areas are mostly cities and other regions with high population densities, accounting for more than 60 per cent of the electorate. As the widespread glitches became apparent, queues formed around polling stations with voters turning to traditional voting in order to have their voices heard.
Other areas, which were using paper ballots, had voting suspended along with the more populous regions.
According to Julio César Castaños, president of the Dominican electoral body, the failures occurred only in these 18 municipalities. Almost half of the devices used to cast votes malfunctioned with virtual ballot papers failing to load.
“We are going to initiate a thorough investigation of what happened and why those ballot papers did not load correctly,” Castaños told reporters. He added that the elections would be held at an “opportune date” in the future, although a date has not yet been agreed upon.
Eduardo Frei, president of the observer commission of the Organisation of American States, has recommended that the government conducts an audit to determine why the failure occurred, and called for all political sectors to work together to find a solution and hold new elections.
The leader of the opposition Modern Revolutionary Party, Luis Abinader, described the suspension of voting as “outrageous and unjustified”. A number of Dominican opposition parties have been opposed to e-voting due to fears that democracy could be compromised by hackers.
The failure of the e-voting system is likely to raise questions about how to secure the integrity of elections, with just months to go before the Dominican Republic’s presidential elections on 17 May.
Meanwhile, the race in the USA to select the Democratic presidential candidate to take on Donald Trump in the upcoming elections suffered a sticky start as an app created to help report and collate results malfunctioned. While e-voting is not widespread in the US, the ‘Voatz’ e-voting app – which researchers have found is rife with security vulnerabilities – has been used to allow deployed members of the military to vote in the 2018 midterm elections.

Apple has warned that disruption in China from the coronavirus will mean revenues falling short of forecasts.
The tech giant said production and sales were affected, and that "worldwide iPhone supply would be temporarily constrained".
The iPhone maker is the first major US company to say that the epidemic will hit its finances.
Apple, which had forecast record revenues of up to $67bn in the current quarter, did not reveal the likely hit.

Apple said that "while our iPhone manufacturing partner sites are located outside the Hubei province - and while all of these facilities have reopened - they are ramping up more slowly than we had anticipated.
"All of our stores in China and many of our partner stores have been closed," it added. "Additionally, stores that are open have been operating at reduced hours and with very low customer traffic. We are gradually reopening our retail stores and will continue to do so as steadily and safely as we can."

The head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, has said there could be a cut of about 0.1-0.2 percentage points to global growth, but stressed there was much uncertainty about the virus's economic impact.
