IT Forum / The Importance of Communication in Safety
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:20:22 AM »
At its most basic level, communication is the exchange of ideas or feelings between people. This exchange consists of 55 percent body language, 38 percent voice tone and 7 percent verbal words, according to studies cited by Grey Owl Aviation Consultants Inc. Some circumstances, however, particularly in the workplace, can impede effective communication and lead to such calamities as patient injury, aircraft failure and employee accidents.

History

The FCC has adopted RF safety guidelines based on qualified recommendations.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) to evaluate how RF energy emitted by transmitters and facilities under its regulatory control impact human health. Guidelines were adopted by the FCC in 1985 and updated in 1996 to establish safe RF exposure and absorption limits based on recommendations from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Types of Radiation

Radiation is manifested as either ionizing or non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays carry high-intensity electromagnetic energy that can damage biological tissue and genetic DNA material. However, the energy levels associated with RF radiation is not great enough to cause molecular cell damage and falls under the category of non-ionizing radiation.

The safety connection

Today’s roads truly are danger zones. Each year, more than 10 million motor-vehicle crashes occur in the U.S.; in 2010, they resulted in 32,885 fatalities, according to NHTSA. That’s the lowest level since 1949, but it’s still an unacceptably high yearly tally that amounts to almost four deaths per hour. And about a fifth of those fatalities occur at intersections.

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that motor-vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people 5 to 34 years old and that they amount to more than $99 billion a year in medical and lost-work costs because of injuries. Scott Belcher, president of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, a nonprofit trade and academic organization that advocates for advanced transportation technology, says, “If you think about the impact that crashes have on the economy, transportation and mobility, and the environment, [V2X] has the potential to be a game changer.”

Roadway deaths have been reduced, thanks in part to important safety developments such as advanced air bags, well-designed vehicle structure, and electronic stability control. NHTSA says that V2X addresses a wider range of crash scenarios than any of those single technologies.

Each car transmits its data 10 times per second. That allows a car equipped with the technology to create a real-time virtual map of all vehicles in the area, individually monitoring their position, speed, and location, and calculating whether another vehicle could cause a collision with yours. If the system determines a crash is possible, it will alert the driver through real-time audible, visual, and even tactile alerts (a vibration in the seat or steering wheel), depending on the design. V2X can also alert distracted drivers to potential hazards even when they’re looking away from the road.

Dear Nature,
Thanks for you post and information and I would like to add the following:

A number of factors have been considerate essential before a concern can be successfully launched. In addition to all other factors, there is one more important factor i.e., entrepreneur. The qualities and type of leadership available to a concern directly affect its working. The entrepreneur (a businessman in this context) plans and executes various business policies.

A properly management concern is generally a reflection of leadership qualities of the businessman. There are certain qualities which are considered inherent but there are some other qualities which may be acquired by experience and training. Some of the important qualities which the businessman should possess are discussed as follows:

A businessman should be hard working. There is no substitute for hard work. Success and hard work go together. He should be dedicated to his work. His work will motivate his employees to work with the same zeal. A person who himself shirks hard work will not be able to get more work from others.

The consumers, employees and government want the businessman to considerate to their demands. He has to reconcile various interests. The courage and foresightedness of the businessman will help him to take important decisions. He should not feel helpless in the face of difficulties. Business is not an easy task these days. Only those persons will be successful who will have the capacity to face difficulties with a smiling face.

Common Forum/Request/Suggestions / Re: Traffic jam in Dhaka city.
« on: February 22, 2014, 04:43:06 PM »
live in Dhaka, only 20 minutes away from my university; but I get out from my house about 1 hour and 15 minutes before class will start. Because of terrible traffic jam, most of the time it takes about an hour to reach university. I remember a week, right after Eid-ul-Fitr Dhaka city was like half empty, at that week I went to university in 20 minutes.

Dhaka is a mega city. More than twelve million people live here. Day by day the number is increasing and most part of Dhaka is badly affected by the population growth. More than 7 hundred thousand rickshaws ply the city road, but only 75 thousand have legal number. This huge number of rickshaws is creating traffic jam. From time to time attempts are made to reduce the number, but the initiative usually produces no results. The number of rickshaw pullers is huge. Almost there are no roads or street or lane free from traffic jam.

Smartphones: positive and negative impact on society

In our contemporary world, smartphones are playing a very important role in people`s life.  It’s a technology that keeps on developing everyday to make the life of each person easer, but the real question is what do people feel about the raped development and impact of such a technology on the society? To answer these questions, I decided to analyze the impact of smartphones on our society in this blog especially since it will help me work on developing a smartphone design project that I will be involved in soon. Of course, both positive and negative impact exist and must be analyzed separately.

Redesigning smartphones resulted in a technology that can keep you busy for most of the day. In many cases, this can keep us oblivious to our surroundings. As Torilsmith says “everyday I witness someone trip on a crack in a sidewalk, almost tumble down flights of stairs, run into trees and have to slam on breaks…all as a result of being mesmerized by their smartphones” (Torilsmith, January 2012) Moreover, another negative impact of the improvement of smartphones is that it is changing the social norms of our lives. People are starting to be disrespectful without noticing that being busy on their smartphones is the reason. There are many things that show how redesigning and improving smartphones change our social norms. For example, teenagers now a days are texting all the times and adults are receiving work-related phone calls or emails during holydays. Once again, these are just certain negative impacts of smartphones on the society that we must keep in mind while working on improving that technology.

I think, Government should take steps to remove the traffic jam from Dhaka City mainly.

Besides, we can use the techniques of Transportation Problem which is a special branch of Operations Research in Mathematics.
By using the transportation and assignment  techniques, we can save our time and also minimize our cost and maximize our satisfactions, but Government must take steps for implementation of the same.

Positive Effects of Mobile Phones

Communication Convenience

Mobile Phone is the best way to communicate. We can stay in touch with our loved ones anywhere, anytime, just because of mobile phones. All thanks to their small size, lightweight, that make them portable.

Entertainment

Life is nothing less than a hell without any entertainment in it. Thanks to mobile phones that let us entertain while on the go. The mobile phones getting launched nowadays, come with super impressive features related to entertainment.  Mobile manufacturers know it pretty well that entertainment is demand of today. This is the reason why mobile phones are nothing less than a complete portable entertainment devices.

Useful in Studies and Business

Mobile phones are quite useful in studies and business. In both fields, the mobile phone has become like compulsory gadget. Students can access Internet on their mobile phones while on the go, and thus can get knowledge of any topic they wish to. The business persons can keep updated with the markets up and downs, can stay in touch with their employees and clients.

Work as Boon in Emergencies

Just consider any emergency situation in which you want to talk to your friend, relative or anyone else? Mobile Phone is what works as boon in such situations. You might have faced any emergency situation in which mobile phone helped you, have you? Whether you have faced it or not, it’s quite easy to understand the role of mobile phones in emergencies. Boon is what we can call the mobile phones in such situations, right?
Negative Effects of Mobile Phones

Bad Impact on Studies

The students are just addicted to mobile phones. They can be seen playing games, chatting, and talking to their friends on their mobile phones most of the times. This is the reason why they don’t get time for studies. In fact, students are more interested in wasting their time on mobile phones, rather than spending it on studying.

Accident and Health Issues

Most of the accidents that happen daily arise because of mobile phones. The mobile phones have resulted in dangerous driving, whose direct impact can be seen in increasing no. of accidents. Apart from accidents, mobile phones have bad impact on health as well. Several researches conducted by the health experts have proved the bad impact of mobile phones on health.

Open Source Forum / THE IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN E AND VITAMIN C THIS WINTER
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:44:58 PM »
Remember being a kid and hearing your parents say “don’t forget to take your vitamins.” It may have been annoying to hear at the time but, especially with age, there is an increased risk of developing illnesses, diseases, circulatory problems, joint flexibility loss and other health-related issues that may be postponed or even avoided by simply taking the right vitamins. In fact, with Winter and the cold blast of harsh weather roaring in, the chance of catching either a cold or flu may seem an almost imminent fact for most people. Yet, vitamins like Vitamin E and Vitamin C, known as powerful antioxidants, boost the immune system by neutralizing free radicals that are harmful to the body and dramatically improve the chances of remaining healthy throughout the winter season and throughout the entire year.

Vitamin E and Vitamin C individually are both extremely effective when it comes to staying healthy. However, a vitamin formulation, like Vitamin E-Gems with C, combines Vitamin E with Vitamin C, creating a powerful antioxidant blend that work together synergistically to improve the effectiveness of each as a whole. Vitamin C recycles used vitamin E in the body and restores its back into an active antioxidant. This means the body’s Vitamin E resources will not expire as quickly when combined with Vitamin C and that more antioxidants are available to fend off illness and disease for longer periods of time than either Vitamin E or Vitamin C would produce alone.

So along with the thick hat, wrapped scarf, wool gloves and bundled clothing you wear to protect yourself from the cold this Winter season, don’t forget to take your vitamins, in particular, Vitamin E formulations with Vitamin C.

Who Needs Vitamin C?
Everyone who lacks a regular vitamin C intake risks catching illnesses; however, there are groups of people who are even more likely to get sick. These people, who aremost susceptible to contracting disease from lack of vitamin C, fit intothree categories.

Specifically, smokers are at high risk of a vitamin C deficiency. When the National Research Council set the RDA for vitamin C, they did not consider that the body metabolizes vitamin C at a faster rate in smokers and second hand smokers. The set RDA for vitamin C is 60mg, and one cigarette depletes the body of a whopping 25mg.

Moreover, alcohol consumers are also in danger of a low level of vitamin C. A large intake of alcohol can dilute the ascorbic acid in the blood, and increases urinary excretion of vitamin C. Therefore, those who drink alcohol, on a more than regular basis, can have a poor diet. When the alcohol is factored in, the body is lacking an adequate level of vitamin C. One study suggests that doses of vitamin C at 500 to 1,000 mg per day can aid in the treatment of alcoholism

Those, who have stress filled lives, especially need a higher level of vitamin C intake. When a person is under stress, the adrenal glands are depleted of vitamin C. At this occurrence, the blood reaches a high oxidation level which makes the adrenal glands unable to fight off toxins; therefore, to protect the body, one must consume a higher level of vitamin C. Studies have shows that when animals (who are able to produce their own vitamin C) are in stressful conditions their bodies produce a higher level of vitamin C to cope with stress. Humans cannot produce their own vitamin C; however, they can consume it in a variety of ways.

Solar / Re: Interesting facts about Sun
« on: July 08, 2013, 11:57:16 AM »
Ok, Good...............but

People with a deep, golden tan are often said to have a healthy glow. Even though exposure to the sun can relieve the discomfort of certain conditions such as arthritis and asthma, the dangers of excessive exposure often outweigh the benefits. Not only can the sun's rays cause you to look older, they can bring on life-threatening conditions as below...........

The Facts

Ultraviolet rays account for about 6 percent of the sun's rays. These harmful rays cause undesirable effects on your skin. The worst time to be out in the sun is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. because that is when the sun's rays are the strongest. Effects of the sun vary due to the atmosphere, time of day and season. They can also depend on how close to the equator you are.

Sunburn
Sunburn is one of the most common effects of the sun on the skin. You will usually notice the symptoms of a sunburn a few hours after exposure. Severe reactions can occur within 12 hours, with symptoms such as pain, extreme fatigue, blistering, swelling, chills, fever, nausea and even delirium. Contact your dermatologist if your pain becomes unbearable, as he can prescribe a topical ointment to help alleviate the swelling.

    Aging

Excessive exposure to the sun can cause you to look much older. The sun's rays change the skin's texture by weakening its elasticity. This causes the skin to sag and appear leathery. Sun worshipers are often plagued with wrinkles as well, making them look 10 to 20 years older than what they are. This is not an immediate effect, but a cumulative effect that gets worse over time.

 Cancer

One of the most devastating effects of sun on the skin is the development of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma are all forms of skin cancer caused by ultraviolet rays. Squamous cell carcinoma is characterized by a crusty, scaly raised bump and can spread to other parts of the body. Basal cell carcinoma appears as a wound that won't heal, or a flat, rounded skin abnormality that does not spread to other parts of the body. Both squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma have a high cure rate, up to 95 percent of cases. Melanoma is more deadly, causing 80 percent of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma looks like a large, asymmetrical mole.

  Prevention
Early prevention is the key to beautiful, healthy skin. Avoiding sun exposure during peak hours is ideal, but not always possible. When going out in the sun, it is important to apply sunblock with an SPF value of 15 or higher. Choose a waterproof sunblock if you are going to be in the water. Reapply often, especially if you have been sweating or swimming.
