Introduction
In this era of the fourth industrial revolution, our education system needs to fulfil the global economy’s demand for highly skilled and adaptive workers. But to create a well-balanced education system, we have to create a strong mindset among students who are about to enter the unexplored digital world of the twenty-first century. For that purpose, Daffodil International University (DIU) has initiated a highly structured counselling system for students which will help them to search for their own potential in relevant fields of interests. Counselling or advising is a dynamic process where both the advisor and advisee maintain a respectful yet communicative and supportive relationship between themselves. In this particular relationship, the advisor serves as a teacher and guide the students in a self-awakening journey of achievement (O’Banion, 1994). It is necessary for conditions where an institutional representative provides with suggestions about an academic, social, or personal matter. The structure of these suggestive programs might be to inform, suggest, counsel, discipline, coach, mentor, or even teach (Kuhn, 2008). The education system of many Asian universities especially Bangladesh is not participatory oriented due to the absence of practices of group discussion, shyness of learners, the sometimes exploitative role of educators, and traditional teaching-learning practices in the classroom (Islam, 2005).

A teacher talking in the classroom and students taking notes is a backdated and unsupportive education system which is unfortunately very popular in the Indian sub-continent. In such single-mode delivery systems, students do not feel interested in their study materials due to lack of involvement and engagement (Hirschbuhl, Jackson, & Bishop, 1995). According to Lynn (1977), the “essence of teaching is communication”. Various educators have suggested that student achievement is related to effective communication between teachers and students (Bloom, 1976; McCroskey, 1977; Seiler, 1978) If teachers and students are lacking basic communication skills, then learning is inefficient.  Teachers can be benefited greatly by learning and then by practising basic counselling communication skills with students (Rice & Smith, 1993).

Students Counseling and Mentoring at DIU
There is no doubt that teaching is an endless journey but a teacher works as a bridge where the individual and the society shake hands (Palmer, 2017). Daffodil International University has initiated a three-tiered counselling system which covers teaching and learning initiative from a supportive and participatory perspective. The first tier is the stage where a course teacher himself or herself counsels or advises a student. Every course teacher of Daffodil International University has to maintain its counselling hours rigorously. During these counselling hours, the course teacher deals with academic, financial or social problems of the students. The documentation of the counselling process can be maintained in the “Mentoring” section of the Daffodil ERP. The second tier is the stage where a specific course teacher receives counselling requests from a student’s mentor. In this stage, the mentor requests the course teacher to take care of some specific issues (mostly academic) with the student. The third stage is the stage where a course teacher sends requests to the mentor of a student for taking care of specific problems. Figure 1 demonstrates the counselling practices at DIU. How to identify students who need counselling
The course teachers and the mentors look for some particular characteristics or occurrences which identifies or indicates the possible occurrence of disturbance. For example, a course teacher or mentor may look for irregularity in class, poor academic performance, financial problem, drop out, addiction to drugs and other social or family pressure points. After noticing such symptoms, a course teacher or mentor goes to the mentoring section of DIU ERP, and then log in. After logging in, they enter into the course counselling option and face two choices. The course teacher can send a counselling request to the students mentor or he/she can receive any request from mentor of he/she can himself/herself counsel the student. How to Counsel the Students
At first, a mentor has to deeply understand the student’s socio-economic background. Understanding the family and per dynamics can help the mentor to identify the student’s specific problem and the context with it. Then the mentor will have to inquire about student’s academic performance. After that, the mentor will go to mentoring option again and will record his/her counselling data. Figure 3 reveals counselling request to mentor which done by the course instructor. Then the mentor will diagnose the problem and will find out the best solution to that problem. Then the counsellors will regularly check for progress. For more information please visit:

How to document the counselling outcome
There are three segments of documentation e.g. i) counselling request to mentor, ii)  counselling request from mentor and iii)  a teacher/course teacher commonly can document about the student’s any affairs like result, financial matter, career development, motivation and other relevant problems which he/she (Teacher) has tried to solve. It will be automatically generated in our present ERP. Figure 5 illustrates it. For more details, please visit the following link-

How to Set Up Counselling Hours
A teacher will provide one hour for a specific course in a week as counselling hour. This has to be maintained throughout the semester.

Who Is a Student Mentor and What Their Duties Are
A mentor is a person who helps or advises someone who needs help with some specific issues. Mentors at DIU carry out the responsibilities of attending students’ problems and maintaining a proper communication channel with them. A teacher in DIU is viewed as a two-way bridge between the students and the university.

The Entrepreneurs of Today

The world as we know it is now massively influenced by entrepreneurs. In the last few decades, Bangladesh itself has experienced a boom in start-up culture. These businesses have not only found success in existing industries but many businesses have helped create new industries altogether.

But what makes the entrepreneurs of the 21st century different from their predecessors? What kind of impact do today’s Bangladeshi entrepreneurs have on one of the fastest growing economies in the world?

Sadia Afrin Aroni, Co-founder and Managing Director, Checkmate Events said, “After graduating I chose to follow a career in the corporate world. But after working for three years, I realised that I wasn’t happy with the lack of freedom I have to explore and be creative. So, in 2015, I left my well-paying job to take a shot at becoming an entrepreneur and started Checkmate Events with my partner.”

The drive to stand out is what seems to encourage the youth to take more risks in comparison to their forerunners. And with the explosion in technology and the increase in connectivity, creating your own unique brand is easier than ever.

Ifteker Mahmud, Co-founder and Managing Director, Purplebot Digital added, “When I started, there was a thrill in exploring new things on my own terms. And any success for the company felt very personal. I guess the satisfaction you can get from working on your own projects is unparalleled for me, and that’s what inspired me to follow through with my desire to start my own company.”

According to a recent report by the World Bank, youth unemployment rate in Bangladesh reached its peak at 11.64 percent in the year 2018. With over 28 percent of our country’s population between 15 and 29 years of age, there seems to be a significant gap between our yearly economic growth (GDP for the 2018-19 fiscal year is estimated to be a record-breaking 8.3 percent) and the rate at which the youth are getting employed.

In order to fix this gap, the focus on young entrepreneurs have increased over the last few years. These entrepreneurs are expected to come up with innovative ideas and create job opportunities for millions of others. This notion is not only backed up by the government but is also being pushed by educational institutions, like BRAC’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) or Daffodil International University’s Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development (BED) program. Various courses are also being adopted by leading business institutions and entrepreneurial idea competitions are regularly promoted to encourage students in pushing their creative and analytical abilities.

This aligns with the increasing number of youth opting for a life as an entrepreneur. The most obvious reasons include job dissatisfaction, the desire to earn more money, and the millennium dream of being your own boss.

According to an article on The Daily Star by Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director, Centre for Policy Dialogue, 80 percent of the jobs available to the youth are informal, low-paying jobs. This is another reason for the strong job dissatisfaction faced by many.

Start-ups, however, allow employees to work and learn from the company as it grows with them. This not only encourages employees to work harder but also creates a sense of achievement for everyone involved. A report published by the Ministry of Planning stated that approximately 15 lakh jobs were created by SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) between 2003 and 2014. This number is only growing since the introduction of e-commerce.

The newer generation, being more equipped with the technologies of this millennium, adopted the various new skills that never existed before. This is giving rise to an increasing number of small business owners, many of whom are employing even more young people, generating employment.

Sayem Faruk, Co-founder, Alpha Catering, feels that the increase in connectivity has opened doors to possibilities that were previously unthinkable. He said, “The vastness of information and opportunities are also the reason for the challenges we face today that perhaps the previous generation didn’t. Because of all of this information and opportunities are accessible to anyone and because of how globalised everything is now, it created far more competition than we had ever seen before. This is true in whichever industry you look into.”

According to the report by the Ministry of Planning, SMEs are responsible for 45 percent of manufacturing value addition, about 80 percent of industrial employment, about 90 percent of total industrial units and make up for about 25 percent of the labour force in the country.

However, given how the marketplace demands change quickly with new trends and technological advancements, many start-ups fail to sustain. Even though a lot of young individuals are starting their own businesses, there seems to be a significant lack of skilled workforce to cope with the changing job descriptions.

Ami Sayeed, Co-founder, Maverick Studios, talked about how they have wanted to focus on visual effects (VFX) for a long time and how they were struggling to find people with the required skill set. He mentioned, “When we realised that there aren’t many people equipped with the knowledge on VFX, we created Mvrk Lair, a wing where we trained the youth to learn VFX. Ultimately, we were able to start focusing on this industry and right now we have around 50 people employed under Maverick Studios and many others who work in separate wings like Shop-Up, our e-commerce service platform.”

The boom in entrepreneurship has also been particularly beneficial for women. More and more home-makers and young girls are beginning to see the values of e-commerce. Starting from selling clothes to selling home-cooked meals, the 21st century technologies have opened doors for thousands of women looking for financial independence. While many women who would previously choose to not work in an office are now finding a way to earn a living through online platforms.

Tonuruha Ameen, Founder and henna artist at Leelabali, spoke of how she worked as a henna artist since she was a second-year undergraduate student to pay for her own tuition. “It started out as a way to earn some extra money, doing something I enjoy, but now it’s a way for me to feel like I am in control of my work,” she said.

Regardless of all these perks, how does a company stay relevant and sustain in today’s highly competitive market?

Ivdad Ahmed Khan Mojlish, Co-founder and Managing Director, LightCastle Partners, spoke about the key attributes required for a successful entrepreneurial venture. He said, “First of all, people need to see entrepreneurship as a problem-solving opportunity. If you have a knack for solving problems, you can become an entrepreneur. Secondly, if you really want to see your company grow and sustain, you cannot see it as a short-term activity you want to try out. You need to have a lot of patience and perseverance to see the fruits of labour and it will take time in most cases. Thirdly, you need to be able to work with a good team and not expect yourself to manage everything on your own. It’s part of being a good leader. And lastly, the most important part is to enjoy what you are doing and keep an open mind to learning new things so you can truly make an impact from whichever industry you are in.”

Khaled Mahmud, Founder, MIB Spirit spoke about how everyone in our country is capable of being entrepreneurs. “Unlike the previous generations, the youth today are more enthusiastic about entrepreneurship. This is a good thing for the development of our country but we also need to make sure that these young people are serious about running their own businesses. Being an entrepreneur is a far more difficult and requires far more grit than a regular job and we need to ensure that the best minds of the country are being equipped with those qualities,” he shared.

What seems to separate today’s entrepreneurs from those of the past, seems to be the fearlessness for the unknown, the drive to test new waters. Regardless of the competition, the desire to make an impact with unique ideas and skills makes being an entrepreneur in the 21st century far more rewarding for this highly globalised generation.

Abstract:

Purpose
Although e-learning has already been accepted globally as an effective medium of delivery of quality education and ensure optimum student participation, Bangladeshi higher educational institutions are still at a very early stage of adopting such technologies. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically examine the suitability of implementing effective e-learning through learning management system (LMS) at the tertiary educational institutions in Bangladesh, and how both students and teachers experience and respond to this new learning platform. Following mixed-methods techniques, data for this study were collected from students and respective course teachers of a private university in Bangladesh by administering questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings of this paper reveal that e-learning has been well accepted by most of the students as they are found routinely spending time on the LMS on a regular basis for watching lecture videos, viewing course information, reading postings of the fellow students in the forum. However, there are constraints as well, since the learning materials are poorly designed that do not allow much interaction between students and lecturers. There are also some technical problems such as poor internet connection which restrict access to e-learning platforms. To harness the optimum benefit of e-learning, this paper recommends a concerted effort by all stakeholders, such as students, lecturers, administrators and policy makers so that each of their priorities and expectations are reflected in the designing and implementing e-learning platforms.

Design/methodology/approach
This paper is based on the qualitative evaluation of Education 3.0 platform. Primary data were collected from the students using a well-structured survey questionnaire, and the findings of the survey have subsequently been cross-referred and supplemented by non-participatory observations with semi-structured interviews which allowed a better in-depth understanding of the issue at hand.

Findings
The findings of the study suggest that a majority of the students are found to be highly enthusiastic about the online courses. They are eager to participate and interact in the online platforms, which are somehow limited in the traditional classroom settings. However, there are several institutional, administrative and technical limitations of implementing e-learning in Bangladesh. It is recommended that better orientation of the users, quality content distribution though user-friendly systems and enhanced asynchronous interaction between the lecturers and students are the key pre-requisites to harness the optimum benefit from e-learning technologies in Bangladesh.

Originality/value
The data have been analyzed and discussed using qualitative framework which allows an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and challenges of the use of e-learning technologies at the higher educational institutions in Bangladesh.

Development is a buzzword in Bangladesh. Everyone talks about development but what do we really mean by development? There seems to be an obsession everywhere regarding the term without critically challenging the version of development that we have adopted.

The conceptualisation of development is not straightforward. Scholars such as G Hart ("Development Critiques in the 1990s: Culs de Sac and Promising Paths", 2001) have distinguished between Development (with a "Big d") and development (“small d”) as an act of “post-world war project of intervention” and an act of “uneven geographical reconfiguration” respectively.

In the context of Bangladesh, development with a “small d” has always been in action at the local level through the effort made by millions of people every day. A hypothetical "small d" example can be adopted here by borrowing the community garden analogy provided by Gibson-Graham (Take Back the Economy, 2013). In a community garden, resources provided by nature (sunlight, water, air, soil, seeds) are carefully nurtured by gardeners with their labour to produce wealth (e.g. vegetables, fruits). As wealth is produced, they are managed in an effective way by consumption, distribution and recycling in order to ensure the ongoing survival of the gardeners and the garden. If nature is kind and there is surplus, the wealth is shared with extended families/neighbours or even donated to the local food bank in order to build goodwill and contribute to the community. It is also up to the gardeners to decide whether to sell some of the surplus at the local market to invest in the further productivity of the garden. “Small d” development is thus organised around the evolving human-nature support system. By widening our vision we can recognise a similar process that we carry out every day through household work, care work, feeding the poultry, co-operative farming/fishing, indigenous land management, forest management and so on.

On the other hand, “Big d” is an imported or often infiltrated idea that pursues the capitalist mode of development through implementing mega projects and policies. Under this, efforts that are being made at the local level are often overlooked, ignored or conceptualised as flawed or subordinate. We have adopted the “Big d” development approach advocated by big global actors such as the World Bank and IMF which assume that the free market economy and privatisation can solve our societal crisis. In that process, big private business enterprises and corporates have become the economic powerhouses of the country by accumulating capital and suppressing opportunities at the local level. Despite living in a finite planet, we have exploited the non-renewable energy resources and manipulated the renewable ones. Despite living with others, we have focused on individual gains and preferences while privileging some at the cost of many others. Large-scale corporate farming has replaced co-operative agricultural practices, organic products have been replaced by the genetically modified organism (GMO) products, people have been made landless through various processes of grabbing/land acquisition, rivers/canals and many other natural elements have been killed by massive infrastructural development and so on. The very popular metrics of measuring “Big d” such as GDP bear no account of many local interventions such as women's household contribution or the care work. As if development with a "Big d" means true development and “small d” development is not a sign of development, rather the latter is one of primitive society!

But it's time to rethink the version of development that we have adopted, mostly from the legacy of British and Pakistani colonial rule. The idea is not to abandon either of the two but to ask if it is really possible to have our own approach where they can co-exist or where at least the “small d” is not totally overshadowed by the hegemony of “Big d”. It is hard to answer this question at the moment, but the process of thinking of alternatives can be started by at least recognising the efforts made at local levels and valuing indigenous traditions, norms, values and knowledge. There is evidence around us of individuals and communities which are engaged in various innovative ways of addressing our daily challenges. Inspiration can be taken from localised and pluralistic grassroots movements. Take the Water Museum in Coastal Bangladesh, a first-of-its-kind in South Asia, where, after being severely impacted by the water crisis in the region, community people had formed it in 2014 as part of their campaign for saving the rivers and to uphold the cultural value of water over its commercial value. Or the formation of farmers' cooperatives in northern Bangladesh to create a seed bank, a community-led initiative which emerged as a strategy of not only ensuring food security during drought but also as a mechanism of economic, political and social empowerment of communities, to support the whole community. Or from those slum dwellers of Dhaka, who despite facing extreme economic hardship are supporting the economy of the city by creating space for a diverse range of economic practices where these practices are often driven by the motive of collective survival rather than profit gain.

My belief is that actual development and prosperity cannot be achieved unless we consciously defeat the seductive power of the glamorous notion of “Big d” development and work together to make an inclusive society not through competition but through our traditional spirit of shared existence. By noticing all the things that are being done to ensure our material and socio-environmental well-being at the household, community and national level, we can seriously give ourselves a chance at creating an inclusive society.

No doubt that we have lack incredible potential personnel who may work in any suitable position in effectively and efficiently. In this connection university graduates have to change their mindset and develop their skills and potentiality which have market values and demand. Otherwise they will not survive in this 21st century.
