Pharmacy / Treating Fatty Liver
« on: July 08, 2018, 03:15:36 PM »
In general, the diet for fatty liver disease includes:

1. Eat less carbohydrate
Poor diet is the leading cause of fatty liver disease.  The biggest offenders are sugar and foods made of white flour; they need to be avoided completely.  However, a high intake of carbohydrate rich foods in general can promote fatty liver, as the liver converts excess carbohydrate into fat.  Foods that need to be restricted include bread, pasta, rice, breakfast cereals, potatoes and any food made of flour.

2. Eat more vegetables, protein and the right fats
Raw vegetables and fruits are the most powerful liver healing foods. These raw foods help to cleanse and repair the liver filter, so that it can trap and remove more fat and toxins from the bloodstream. Eat an abundance of vegetables (cooked and raw salads).  Fruit is healthy for most people, but if you have high blood sugar or insulin resistance, it’s best to limit fruit to 2 servings per day. Protein is important because it helps to keep the blood sugar level stable, helps with weight loss from the abdomen and reduces hunger and cravings.  Protein should be consumed with each meal.  Good sources of protein include eggs, poultry, seafood, meat, nuts, seeds, whey protein powder, legumes and dairy products.

Most vegetable oil and margarines can worsen a fatty liver.  Healthy fats to include more of in your diet are found in olive oil, oily fish, flaxseeds, coconut oil and raw nuts and seeds.

3. Drink raw vegetable juices
Raw juices are an excellent source of highly concentrated vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Your juice should be comprised of 80 to 100 percent vegetables, with the remainder comprised of fruit.  Do not drink fruit juice; it is too high in carbohydrate and calories.

4. no alcohol
Excess alcohol consumption is the second biggest cause of fatty liver.  Alcohol can cause inflammation and damage to liver cells, resulting in fatty infiltration.

Here are a few foods to include in your healthy liver diet:

1. Coffee to lower abnormal liver enzymes
Studies have shown that coffee drinkers with fatty liver disease have less liver damage than those who don’t drink this caffeinated beverage. Caffeine appears to lower the amount of abnormal liver enzymes of people at risk for liver diseases.

2. Greens to prevent fat buildup
Broccoli is shown to help prevent the buildup of fat in the liver in mice. Eating more greens, like spinach, Brussels sprouts, and kale, can also help with general weight loss.

3. Tofu to reduce fat buildup
Soy protein, which is contained in foods like tofu, may reduce fat buildup in the liver. Plus, tofu is low in fat and high in protein.

4. Fish for inflammation and fat levels
Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna, and trout are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids can help improve liver fat levels and bring down inflammation.

5. Oatmeal for energy
Carbohydrates from whole grains like oatmeal give your body energy. Their fiber content also fills you up, which can help you maintain your weight.

6. Walnuts to improve the liver
These nuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Research finds that people with fatty liver disease who eat walnuts have improved liver function tests.

7. Avocado to help protect the liver
Avocados are high in healthy fats, and research suggests they contain chemicals that might slow liver damage. They’re also rich in fiber, which can help with weight control. Try this refreshing avocado and mushroom salad from Fatty Liver Diet Review.

8. Milk and other low-fat dairy to protect from damage
Dairy is high in whey protein, which may protect the liver from further damage.

9. Sunflower seeds for antioxidants
These nutty-tasting seeds are high in vitamin E, an antioxidant that may protect the liver from further damage.

10. Olive oil for weight control
This healthy oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids. It’s healthier for cooking than margarine, butter, or shortening. Research finds that olive oil helps to lower liver enzyme levels and control weight.

11. Garlic to help reduce body weight
This herb not only adds flavor to food, but experimental studies also show that garlic powder supplements may help reduce body weight and fat in people with fatty liver disease.

12. Green tea for less fat absorption
Data supports that green tea can help interfere with fat absorption, but the results aren’t conclusive yet. Researchers are studying whether green tea can reduce fat storage in the liver and improve liver function. But green tea also has many benefits, from lowering cholesterol to aiding with sleep.

Pharmacy / Fatty Liver (Hepatic Steatosis)
« on: July 08, 2018, 02:54:14 PM »
Fatty liver

Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, is a term that describes the buildup of fat in the liver. It’s normal to have some fat in your liver, but too much can become a health problem.

The liver is the second largest organ in the body. Its function is to process everything we eat or drink and filter any harmful substances from the blood. This process is interrupted if too much fat is in the liver. Fatty liver is when fat accounts for more than 5 to 10 percent of your liver’s weight.

The liver commonly repairs itself by rebuilding new liver cells when the old ones are damaged. When there’s repeated damage to the liver, permanent scarring takes place. This condition is called cirrhosis.

Fatty liver is a reversible condition that can often be resolved with lifestyle modifications. In many cases, fatty liver has no symptoms. It doesn’t usually cause permanent damage unless it progresses.Fatty liver can become harmful to the liver if its underlying cause isn’t recognized and treated.

What are the symptoms of fatty liver?

Fatty liver typically has no associated symptoms. You may experience fatigue or vague abdominal discomfort. Your liver may become slightly enlarged, which your doctor can detect during a physical exam.

However, excess fat in the liver can cause inflammation. If your liver becomes inflamed, you may have symptoms such as:

    a poor appetite
    weight loss
    abdominal pain
    physical weakness
    fatigue
    confusion

If fatty liver progresses to cirrhosis and liver failure, symptoms can include:

    an enlarging, fluid-filled abdomen
jaundice of the skin and yellowing of the eyes
    confusion
a tendency to bleed more easily

What are the causes of fatty liver?

The most common cause of fatty liver is alcoholism and heavy drinking. In many cases, doctors don’t know what causes fatty liver in people who don’t drink alcohol.

Fatty liver develops when the body creates too much fat or cannot metabolize fat fast enough. The excess fat is stored in liver cells where it accumulates to form fatty liver disease. Eating a high-fat, high-sugar diet may not directly result in fatty liver, but it can contribute to it.

Besides alcoholism, other common causes of fatty liver include:

    obesity
hyperlipidemia, or high levels of fats in the blood
    diabetes
    genetic inheritance
    rapid weight loss
side effect of certain medications, including aspirin, steroids, tamoxifen (Nolvadex), and tetracycline (Panmycin)

What are the types of fatty liver?

There are two basic types of fatty liver: nonalcoholic and alcoholic.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) develops when the liver has difficulty breaking down fats, which causes a buildup in the liver tissue. The cause is not related to alcohol. NAFL is diagnosed when more than 10 percent of the liver is fat.

Alcoholic fatty liver

Alcoholic fatty liver is the earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease. Heavy drinking damages the liver, and the liver cannot break down fats as a result. Abstaining from alcohol will likely cause the fatty liver to subside. Within six weeks of not drinking alcohol, the fat will disappear. However, if excessive alcohol use continues, cirrhosis may develop. Read more about the effects of alcohol on the body.
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and alcoholic steatohepatitis

When enough fat builds up, it will cause the liver to swell. If the original cause is not from alcohol, it’s called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This disease can impair liver function.

Symptoms can be seen with this disease. These include:

    appetite loss
    nausea
    vomiting
    abdominal pain
    jaundice

If left untreated, steatohepatitis can progress to permanent scarring of the liver and eventual liver failure.

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy

Acute fatty liver is a rare, and potentially life-threatening, complication of pregnancy.
Symptoms begin in the third trimester. These include:

    persistent nausea and vomiting
    pain in the upper-right abdomen
    jaundice
    general malaise

Women who are pregnant will be screened for this condition. Most women improve after delivery and have no lasting effects.

Who’s at risk for fatty liver?

Fatty liver is the buildup of extra fats in the liver. It’s more likely to develop if you’re overweight or obese. Having type 2 diabetes also may increase your risk for fatty liver. Fat accumulation in the liver has been linked to insulin resistance, which is the most common cause of type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that a high-choline diet is associated with a lower risk of fatty liver disease.

Other factors that may increase your risk for fatty liver are:

    excessive alcohol use
taking more than the recommended doses of certain over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol)
    pregnancy
    high cholesterol
    high triglyceride levels
    malnutrition
    metabolic syndrome

How is fatty liver diagnosed?

Physical exam

If your liver is inflamed, your doctor can detect it by examining your abdomen for an enlarged liver. Let your doctor know if you’ve been experiencing fatigue or loss of appetite. Also, tell your doctor about any history of alcohol, medication, and supplement use.

Blood tests

Your doctor may find that liver enzymes are higher than normal on a routine blood test. This doesn’t confirm a diagnosis of fatty liver. Further analysis is necessary to find the cause of the inflammation.

Imaging studies

Your doctor may use an ultrasound to detect fat in your liver. The fat will show up as a white area on the ultrasound image. Other imaging studies may also be done, such as CT or MRI scans.

Another imaging test similar to ultrasound is a FibroScan. Like an ultrasound, a Fibroscan utilizes sound waves to determine the density of the liver and the corresponding areas of fat and normal liver tissue.

Imaging studies can detect fat in the liver, but they cannot help your doctor confirm any further damage.

Liver biopsy

In a liver biopsy, your doctor will insert a needle into the liver to remove a piece of tissue for examination. Your doctor will give you a local anesthetic to lessen the pain. This is the only way to know for certain if you have fatty liver. The biopsy will also help your doctor determine the exact cause.

Pharmacy / Home Remedies for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
« on: June 27, 2018, 01:16:55 PM »
Taking an antibiotic isn’t the only way to get over symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI).

The following seven viable home remedies — from drinking lots of water to applying heat and wearing loose cotton clothing — may ease your agonizing UTI symptoms or prevent them in the first place:

1. Get Your Fill of Water

One of the first things to do when you have a urinary tract infection is drink plenty of water. That’s because drinking water can help flush away the bacteria that's causing your infection. It puts you on the right track for recovery.

2. Load Up on Vitamin C for a Healthy Urinary Tract

Getting plenty of foods high in vitamin C is important because large amounts of vitamin C make urine more acidic. This inhibits the growth of bacteria in your urinary tract. If you have an active UTI, taking vitamin C supplements may help, too, advises Kandis Rivers, MD, a urologist in the Henry Ford Health System in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

3. Soothe UTI Pain With Heat

Inflammation and irritation from UTIs cause burning, pressure, and pain around your pubic area, Dr. Rivers says. Applying a heating pad can help soothe the area. Keep the heat setting low, don’t apply it directly to the skin, and limit your use to 15 minutes at a time to avoid burns.

4. Cut Bladder Irritants From Your Diet

When you have a UTI, caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, nicotine, carbonated drinks, and artificial sweeteners can irritate your bladder further, making it harder for your body to heal. Focus on healthy foods, such as high-fiber carbohydrates (such as oatmeal or lentil soup), that are good for your digestive health, says Holly Lucille, ND, RN, a naturopathic doctor in private practice in West Hollywood, California, and the author of Creating and Maintaining Balance: A Woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural Hormone Health.

5. Go Ahead, Empty Your Bladder Again

Every time you empty your bladder — even if it’s just a small amount — you rid it of some of the bacteria causing the infection. Keep making those bathroom runs, advises Rivers.

6. Consider Herbal Remedies

You may find some relief from taking the herb uva ursi (bearberry leaf), which is sometimes used as an herbal remedy for lower urinary tract infections. But Rivers cautions that it should be taken only for short periods of time — five days or less — as it could cause liver damage. In addition, the herb goldenseal may be used as a remedy for UTIs, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

It’s important to note that even though these herbs may help some, there have been no large randomized controlled trials (the gold standard when it comes to proving the effectiveness of a drug or treatment in medicine) testing either of these remedies for this purpose.

And always be sure to check with your doctor before taking goldenseal or other supplements. Supplements, herbs, and other medications you might be taking can cause side effects or may interact with one another. The effects can sometimes be serious.

7. Change to Healthier Habits

Lifestyle changes matter because they can help you recover from a UTI and might prevent another infection.

    i) Quit smoking.
ii) Wear loose cotton clothing and underwear.
iii) Wipe yourself clean from front to back.
iv) Choose only fragrance-free personal hygiene products

1. Lower Your Cholesterol
Almonds are a good resource of monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, which facilitate in lowering the LDL (bad) cholesterol. Eating almonds as part of our regular diet can help raise HDL cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol, levels. According to a research done by David Jenkins MD, people who consumed a handful of almonds every day lowered their bad cholesterol level by 4.4%, and those who ate two handfuls every day reduced their bad cholesterol by 9.4%.

2. Prevent Cancer
The fiber present in almonds helps in detoxifying the body. It enables food to move through the digestive system more efficiently. This process cleanses the digestive system. Almonds are also an excellent reserve of vitamin E, Phytochemicals, and flavonoids, which controls the progression of breast cancer cells.

3. Protect Against Diabetes
Almonds have a stumpy glycemic index (GI). Studies demonstrate that almonds have the ability to decrease the after-meal escalation in blood sugar. Therefore, they assist in stabilizing blood sugar levels and offer protection from diabetes.

4. Boost Your Energy
Almonds are rich in manganese, riboflavin, and copper, all of which aid in manufacturing energy.

5. Prevent Birth Defects
Almonds contain folic acid, a confirmed defense against birth defects. Folic acid plays a big function in healthy cell growth and tissue configuration, and therefore, it is very important for the healthy growth of the fetus. Women who intake folic acid – by eating almonds – during their pregnancies are likely to give birth to babies without NTDs (Neural tube defects).

6. Improve Your Brain Power
Scientific readings for almond benefits showed that they contain riboflavin and L-carnitine, nutrients that help in the growth of the brain cells. Almonds also contain phenylalanine, a brain-boosting chemical that aids our cognitive functions. Ayurveda advises having five almonds soaked in water first thing in the morning every day for maximum brain strength.

7. Strengthen Bones And Teeth
Almonds are a good source of micronutrients such as calcium and phosphorus, which avert osteoporosis and strengthen our bones and teeth. Almonds also provide other nutrients that improve bone mineral density and strengthen the skeletal system.

8. Remedy For Anemia
Anemia is caused when red blood cells carry less quantities of oxygen. Almonds contain copper, iron and vitamins, which work as a catalyst in the synthesizing of hemoglobin. Therefore, almonds can be used as a preventive measure for anemia.

9. Weight Maintenance
The calorie filled almond butter does not contribute to weight gain. On the contrary, it contributed to weight loss as the healthy fiber and high protein helped to make the stomach feel full. There is even a suggestion that these calories may not be absorbed and cannot turn into extra pounds. However, the fullness from eating almond butter, combined with its nutritional profile, was found to make people consume less unhealthy food later in the day.

10. Heart Healthy Protein
Those looking to put on muscle mass can choose almond butter as it is a healthy source of proteins. The unsaturated fat in almond butter lowers cholesterol and helps keep heart disease at bay. A healthy adult should consume at least 25% of their daily calories from fat, and a heart-healthy fat with protein is the best path to take.

11. Nerves And Muscles
The magnesium present in almond butter offers a host of benefits to the nervous system and muscle contraction, as the mineral plays a role in both functions. It also contributes to healthy metabolism and bone tissue. This is something that peanut butter cannot offer.

12. Antioxidants
This is another advantage that almond butter has over peanut butter. Almond butter, with its Vitamin E, has significant antioxidant properties that protect the tissues from oxidative damage. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals. A single spoon of almond butter will take care of nearly 30% of your daily Vitamin E requirement.

13. Increase Digestion And Metabolism
Almond milk contains secret traces of fiber. fiber is known for its digestion-enhancing benefits. Thus, almond milk eases the problem of indigestion largely. Increased digestion flushes unwanted and unhealthy toxins out of the human body system. This further increases the metabolic rate of the human body.

14. Increase Physical Alertness
Almond milk is rich in muscle building proteins. Proteins improve muscle health by repairing damaged ligaments and tissues. Thus, it is also a very valuable and nutritional drink for athletes. Improved muscle health reduces body fatigue to a large extent. Thus, almond milk increases the physical alertness of human body.

15. Increases Mental Alertness
Almond milk is rich in potassium. Potassium is one of the minerals that constitute electrolytes in the human body. These electrolytes are charges that boost memory. Thus, almond milk is a natural way to sharpen your memory.

16. Reduce Fever
Bitter almond is said to contain alkaline elements that have toxicity in them. This nature puts an obstacle in front of the fungus, viruses or bacteria to spread out fever in a human body. But the deeper reason has not been discovered so far.

17. As An Anesthetic
When it comes to a minor stitching on your skin or plucking tooth, bitter almond oil can be used as an anesthetic compound. The toxic component called glycoside amygdalin, which is present in essential bitter almond oil, has the capacity to turn the nerves insensitive temporarily so that you will be numb to the sense of pain. But, it must also be noted that you can use bitter almond oil as an anesthetic compound only externally. Consuming it internally can bring upon a gamut of health hazards.

18. Natural Detoxifier
Detoxification is a crucial process, especially if you have recently gone through a binge-eating and partying phase. These events will definitely lead to a toxic formation in your body at an excessive rate, thus leading to a dwindling mood, stress, dull skin, lackluster hair and so on. As stated above, the toxic compounds of bitter almond oil will relieve your inner system from toxins. So, injecting bitter almond oil in a small dosage can bring greater results.

19. Heal Specific Cancer Types
The existence of hydrogen cyanide in bitter almond oil is said to have healing properties in specific cancer types. This fact has been published recently in a medical study. Though in-depth research is still the call of the hour in this area, but there is no doubt that it has added another laurel to the cap of bitter almond oil.

Red, juicy and plump with nutrients, tomatoes are  one of the richest sources of vitamin C and beta carotene, all of them support heart health. They are also abundantly loaded with lycopene, which has been found to reduce risk of high cholesterol, protect eyes and skin, and boost immunity and heart health. Vitamin K, B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6 and minerals such as potassium, manganese and iron further make tomatoes a popular superfood. In fact, the rich content of potassium (267 mg in 100 grams) in tomatoes makes it an ideal pick for high blood pressure patients. One of the most significant benefits of adding tomatoes in your diet is its ability to burn fat.

Tomatoes are relatively low in calories and carbohydrates and have high water content, which makes it an ideal pick for those looking for something filling, which would not topple their calorie requirement for the day. Here's why tomatoes make for an ideal addition to your weight loss diet:

1. Low Calories: You would be surprised to know that 100 grams of tomatoes contain just about 18 calories, which makes it a perfect bet for those on a calorie-restricted weight loss diet.

2. Revs Up Metabolism: Tomatoes are plump with antioxidants, one of the most significant being - lycopene. According to experts, lycopene may rev up metabolism naturally.

3. Curbs cravings: Tomatoes are high in fibre. Fibre takes the longest to digest and induce the feeling of fullness. If you are satiated for long, naturally you would crave less and binge less.

4. Good For Digestion: Fibre is extremely important for good digestion. It adds bulk to your stool, which facilitates your bowel movement, further preventing constipation and boosting digestion. Bad digestion is closely tied to weight gain. If you do not have a good digestive system, your ability to absorb and assimilate nutrients is hindered, moreover, you would face difficulty in eliminating waste and toxins from your body. This can impact your metabolism and slow it down.

5. Fat Burning Properties: Tomatoes encourage the production of the amino acid called Carnitine, which is an organic molecule that plays an important role in the regulation of fatty acid and energy metabolism. This amino acid is reported to enhance the body's fat burning ability.

Biologists Say This Is The Ideal Number of Coffees a Day For Heart Health, And It's Totally Nuts.

Four cups of strong coffee a day might be the recipe for a healthy heart, especially for older adults.

A team of German researchers, led by the molecular biologists Judith Haendeler and Joachim Altschmied, thinks it has discovered clues about how coffee works its caffeine-fuelled magic on our heart health and how much caffeine we should drink each day to see the best benefits.

By studying caffeinated lab mice and dosing human tissues with caffeine, the researchers discovered how a jolt of the stimulant could improve the way cells inside our blood vessels work - essentially, by making certain proteins inside older adult cells perform more like young and nimble ones.

The study was published Thursday in the journal PLOS Biology.

"When you drink four to five cups of espresso," Altschmied told Business Insider, "that seems to improve the function of the powerhouses of our cells, and therefore seems to be protective."

Scientists have for years noticed that people who drink coffee seem to be less likely to die from all sorts of causes, including heart disease, stroke, or diabetes.

Perhaps the best evidence yet for this comes from two massive studies: one of more than 400,000 people in the US by the National Institutes of Health, and another of more than 500,000 Europeans.

Both studies found that regular coffee drinkers were less likely to die from any cause than people who don't sip a daily brew.

Coffee is also associated with a whole host of other health benefits, including a lower risk of liver disease (cirrhosis), a lower risk of developing certain kinds of cancer, lower rates of dementia and Alzheimer's, and a reduced risk of depression.

It's also great for your heart - people who drink three or four cups a day may be 19 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease.

Altschmied said he hoped his new study would debunk the old advice that people with heart problems shouldn't drink coffee, and he argues that drinking the equivalent of about four shots of espresso a day could help reduce the risk of heart attacks, especially for people who are obese or prediabetic.

"It will not replace other things," he said. "Keep on doing your sports, eat healthy, and add coffee to your diet."

If you don't like the taste, green tea has similar levels of caffeine and could also be an effective way to boost heart health.

It's important not to overdo it with the new recommendation, as too much coffee can quicken your heartbeat and cause other health problems.

But drinking up to six cups a day should be OK, cardiologists say, and may even reduce arrhythmias in people with irregular heartbeats.

One caveat: The study wasn't done in humans - only in human tissues and lab mice.
