Curry leaves is a staple in Indian dishes.Commonly used as seasoning, this leaf adds a special flavour to every dish. But there is more to the humble curry leaf than simply flavour. Packed with carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, phosphorous, irons, magnesium, manganese, amino acids, plant sterols and vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B and vitamin E, vitamin K.

Scientific Name: Murraya koenigii L. (Rutaceae family).

Other Names: Sweet neem leaves, Krishna nimba (named after Lord Krishna), Meetha neem, Kadhilimbdo, Kariveppilei, Kari bevu, Jhirang, Gandla, Karepaku, Karapincha, Barsan, Barsanga, Narsingha, Kariaphulli, feuille de cari (French), foglia di cari (Italian), etc.

Curry leaf tree is native to India. It grows in tropical and sub tropical climates. This herb also grows in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Burma, Malaysia and South Africa.

Health benefits:

Curry leaf or Kari patta has anti-inflammatory, anti oxidative, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, carminative, anti-hypercholesterolemic, and hypoglycemic properties. It works as a stimulant, relaxant and mild laxative.Thus, it helps reduce blood sugar and blood cholesterol. In addition, it has been observed that curry leaves help reduce the size of a tumor by fighting cancerous cells.The herb is used as a natural cure for nausea, vomiting (when dealing with bilious vomiting, one teaspoon of powdered tree bark can be taken in two cups of water for a couple of times), stomach upset, and other digestive disorders. It increases appetite and improves digestive functions. Besides, curry leaves facilitate weight loss naturally through detoxification. Furthermore, having a teaspoon of juice extracted from roots of the tree, mixed with one teaspoon of honey, is known to relieve kidney pain.The herb contains volatile oil and oleo resins. As curry leaf extract helps reduce oxidative stress on pancreatic cells by restricting the action of pancreatic alpha-amylase enzyme, this herb is considered valuable in controlling diabetes.

Medicinal Uses of Curry Leaf (Karipatta):

    • Curry leaf benefits individuals suffering from hereditary diabetes and diabetes caused by obesity. All you have to do is eat 10 fresh curry leaves daily in the morning. Follow this therapy for at least three months. Needless to say, you also need to take other precautions associated with this disease.

     
    • Intake of juice extracted from curry leaves brightens the eyes and delays cataract.

     
    • Dry a few curry leaves in shade for 4-5 days. Take one teaspoon of this dried curry leaf powder and mix a teaspoon of honey in it. Consume this home medicine for about two to three times in a day to get rid of constipation.

     
    • Drinking the juice of 15-20 curry leaves mixed with a teaspoon of honey serves as an efficient curry leaf home remedy for diarrhea.

   
    • Simply consuming about eight to ten fresh raw curry leaves benefits in curing dysentery at home.

    • Using a paste prepared from juice of curry leaves and turmeric powder heals and fades acne scars. Leave the mixture on the affected areas for about 15 minutes and then wash it off.

   
    • Applying a mixture of pulp of berries from curry leaf tree and equal amount of lime juice is useful in healing insect bites.

     
    • When dealing with issues like loss of appetite and tastelessness, have a therapeutic drink prepared by adding curry leaf paste, cumin seed powder, and black salt in a cup of buttermilk.

     
    • Take a handful of curry leaves (Karipatta) and boil them in one tablespoon of coconut oil until they become dark in colors. Use this mixture on your hair and wash it off with herbal shampoo after an hour to prevent and cure premature greying of hair. It also stimulates hair growth. In addition, drink juice of curry leaves daily.

Besides, another benefit of curry leaves is that they keep insects at bay. When storing this herb in the refrigerator, do not remove the leaves from the stalk.

It is worth noting that the curry powder used in the Western countries is not actually powdered curry leaves but a combination of certain other spices that create a similar flavor.

Precautions:

Curry leaf benefits health in several ways and there are no known side effects of this herb.

In this era of digitalisation one of the major obstacles for development of any developing nation is handicapped (mental and physical) manpower. But, by raising awareness for proper nutrition and treatment for the pregnant mother and new born babies, a significant number of physical and mental disorders of infants can be avoided.

The CH affected babies would grow poorly and will face delay in their development. By several years of age, they would display the recognisable facial and body features of elfin (cretinism) with an IQ level below 80 in most cases.

Thyroid hormones are mainly tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4) which are secreted from the butterfly shaped thyroid gland located at the neck just below the Adam's apple. The deficiency of these hormones is called hypothyroidism and when this deficiency present in new born babies that is called CH. If CH remains untreated until 3 months after birth, the result would be the mental and physical retardation of the child. Brain development is absolutely dependent on normal thyroid hormone levels. The foetus and the infants are neurologically vulnerable due to the incomplete brain development in humans at birth.

Around the world approximately 1 in 4,000 newborn babies has a severe deficiency of thyroid function but according to the research paper of 'Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Dhaka, Bangladesh' incidence rate in Bangladesh is approximately 1: 1,300, which is alarming.

Infants born with congenital hypothyroidism may show no effects, or may display mild effects that often go unrecognised as a problem such as excessive sleeping, reduced interest in nursing, poor muscle tone, low or hoarse cry, infrequent bowel movements, exaggerated jaundice and low body temperature. If foetal deficiency is severe because of complete absence (athyreosis) of the gland, physical features may include a larger anterior fontanelle, persistence of a posterior fontanelle, an umbilical hernia and a large tongue (macroglossia).

Nearly all cases of congenital hypothyroidism can be detected by the newborn screening programme. These are based on measurement of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone, which is secreted from pituitary gland and initiate thyroid hormone formation) or thyroxine (T4) on the second or third day of life.

If the TSH is high, or the T4 is low, the infant's doctor and parents are called and a referral to a paediatric endocrinologist is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and initiate treatment in the developed country. Often a technetium (Tc-99m pertechnetate) thyroid scan is performed to detect a structurally abnormal gland. A radioactive iodine (RAIU) exam will help differentiate congenital absence or a defect in organification (a process necessary to make thyroid hormone). Congenital hypothyroidism can also occur due to genetic defects of thyroxine or tri-iodothyronine synthesis within a structurally normal gland.

However, the goal of newborn screening programme is to detect and start treatment within the first 1–2 weeks of life. Treatment consists of a daily dose of thyroxine, available as a small tablet. The generic name is levothyroxine, and several brands are available. The tablet is crushed and given to the baby with a small amount of water or milk. Within a few weeks, the T4 and TSH levels are rechecked to confirm that they are being normalised by treatment. As the child grows up, these levels are checked regularly to maintain the right dose. The dose increases as the child grows.

So the Government should emphasise on CH, for developing and raising awareness on newborn screening programmes and make the test at low cost and mandatory before leaving every child from the hospital.

New international research has found more evidence to suggest that exercise can prevent the onset of depression, and could be beneficial in people of all ages.

Carried out by King's College London along with researchers from Brazil, Belgium, Australia, the US and Sweden, together the team looked at 49 studies which set out to examine if physical activity could decrease the risk of developing depression.

The studies included a total of 266,939 participants, none of whom had mental illness, who were followed up on average after 7.4 years.

After taking into account important risk factors such as body mass index, smoking and physical health, the researchers found that compared to those who engaged in low levels of physical activity, those with high levels had lower odds of developing depression.

In addition, physical activity also protected both youths, adults and seniors as well as participants across a range of geographical regions including Europe, North America and Oceania.

Commenting on the findings, lead author Professor Dr Felipe Barreto Schuch, Universidade La Salle (Brazil), said, "This is the first global meta-analysis to establish that engaging in physical activity is beneficial for protecting the general population from developing depression. We have looked at whether these effects happen at different age groups and across different continents and the results are clear. Regardless your age or where you live, physical activity can reduce the risk of having depression later in life."

Co-author Dr Joseph Firth, Research Fellow at NICM Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University, also commented saying, "The compelling evidence presented here provides an even stronger case for engaging all people in regular physical activity; through schools, workplaces, leisure programs and elsewhere, in order to reduce the risk of depression across the lifespan."

The team added that further studies would now be useful to investigate the minimum amount of physical activity needed to reduce the risk of depression, as well as the effects of different types of activity.

1.  Cherries

Your alarm goes off in the morning: You roll over, and check your email and social feeds on your phone. Then you head off to work, where you’ll stare at a computer for the next eight hours. Later that night, you sink into the couch and chill with a few episodes of your latest Netflix obsession. How do your eyes feel?

Many of us spend a good chunk of the day glued to a screen. Last year, a Nielsen Company audience report revealed that the average adult in the United States spends 8 hours and 47 minutes a day on a device.  Which begs the question: How is all that screen time affecting our eye health and more?

The answer isn’t so clear. Some doctors worry that exposure to blue light from electronic devices may have a negative impact on our eyes. "Blue light is concerning because the cornea and the lens don’t filter it out, so it goes right to the back of the eye," says Anam Qureshi, MD, clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone in New York City. She says some experts think it might damage the retina and lead to conditions like macular degeneration—though there isn't any research to back up those concerns.

Dallas-based optometrist Janelle Routhier, OD, has found that, for her patients, staring at a screen for long periods of time can lead to digital eyestrain—also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms may include blurry vision; trouble focusing on one thing; red, tired eyes; dry eyes; and headaches, she says.

Think of it this way: “If you’re in a squat position and you’re holding it for a really long time, your legs are going to get really tired and you’re eventually not going to be able to hold that position anymore,” says Dr. Routhier. The same thing happens to your eyes. In order to focus on an object, your eye muscles need to "constantly be pulled together," she says. And after a while, those muscles get fatigued.

What's more, a number of studies have shown that the blue light suppresses melatonin—a hormone that helps the body maintain healthy circadian rhythms. That can make it harder to fall asleep, and lack of sleep can have long-term health consequences, says Dr. Qureshi.

While more research is needed to assess the side effects of our tech habits, there are a few simple strategies you can use to play it safe and protect your eyes from your screens. Below, eye docs share their best tips.

Give your eyes a break

“If you’re going to be concentrating on a screen for a long time, try the 20/20/20 rule," says Dr. Routhier. "The goal is to take a break every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds, and look at something that’s at least 20 feet away.” You might look out a window, for example, or across your office. To create this habit, set a reminder on your phone to take these regular breaks.

Also: It sounds silly, but try to remember to blink.  "When you concentrate, you decrease your blink rate, which can cause all the tears to evaporate from the surface of your eye and cause blurry vision, eye irritation, redness, and pain," says Dr. Qureshi.

Download a light-reducing app

There are a number of apps that reduce the blue light on your devices, such as f.lux. You can also use the “Nightshift” mode on your iPhone.

But the best way to keep your gadgets from interfering with your Zs is to turn them off an hour before your bedtime. Instead, opt for a less-stimulating pre-slumber activity, like reading a book or listening to some calming music.

Get smart about your lenses

The right specs can also help with digital eye strain, says Dr. Qureshi. "As you get older, you may lose the ability to see up close," she explains. Consider picking up a pair of reading glasses that will help you see your computer screen better (which may be a different strength than the specs you use to read books or magazines). "You really have to tailor the glasses you wear for the distance between you and your device," Dr. Qureshi says.
