The development of RMG industries in Bangladesh is a phenomenon. Throughout the last few decades we have been successful in earning foreign currencies in this sector in a positive rate. But few things are still really shocking to know that we are still in the same place in terms of new product development, innovation, technology and many more. The only thing we are strong in, is availability of cheap labour. But switching to value added products and development of other more profitable textile industries other than the labour based RMG sector is not possible here.
Many educational and training institutions have been evolved in developing the textile and RMG education. But the trend here is also the same. In Bangladesh we mainly focus on just the overview of the whole thing. the specialization is not going to impact the industry at all. Specially we are not still well equipped in machinery and technology. The educational institutes like universities and other textile training institutes have been just increased in numbers but none of them offers specialization in machinery and technology part.

As a result we are not getting benefits as we expect, because a great extent of earned foreign currency is drained to nurture a huge number of foreign experts related to this industry. This is really high time to rethink about our prestigious sector. The educational institutions especially the universities that offer textile education need to rethink about the course curriculum that offers more depth knowledge on machinery and technology.

Textile Engineering / Industry 4.0: Key Design Principles

Industry 4.0 refers to a trend or concept in the current manufacturing industry that focuses on automation of processes and data exchange. The initiative integrates the IoT, cyber-enhanced systems and cloud computing. It originated in Germany, and advocates for the full automation of manufacturing processes.

This manufacturing concept is based on 4 key principles, aimed at ensuring that all manufacturing processes are computerized. These include:

This refers to the ability of machinery and related components to connect and communicate with people through the Internet.

Transparency in information
This principle requires that information systems should be able to create virtual copies of the physical world by configuration of digital data into sensor data. For this to be achieved, raw sensor data has to be aggregated with compatible context data.

Technical assistance
This concerns the ability of the systems to support humans through comprehensive aggregation and visualization of information for better decision-making and quick solutions to problems. Technical assistance also focuses on the ability of cyber-enabled systems to physically support human resources by handling various tasks, which are considered time-consuming, harmful and exhausting to people.

Decentralization of decisions
This principle refers to the ability of cyber-enabled systems to independently come up with decisions and carry out their dedicated functions. This can only be changed in the event of interferences or conflicts with the intended goals, which may require some tasks to be handled at other levels. The concept is characterized by greater customization of products in flexible manufacturing environments, as in industries dealing with mass production.

The key focus of this strategy is to effect various means of self-diagnosis, configuration, optimization, cognition and intelligence towards the support of people across various working environments. An example of machines that operate on this concept is those that can predict hitches, react to unexpected changes and facilitate maintenance autonomously.
Industry 4.0 is a “smart factory” initiative that advocates for the use of cyber-enabled systems in monitoring physical processes, creating virtual copies of the physical environment, and making decisions in industries. The information can be used by humans in facilitating various industrial processes or actions for improved productivity.

The textile industry is facing 3 forces that are shaping and changing the industry: e-commerce & online purchasing, personalization and sustainability. Industry 4.0 principles and innovative digital technologies will enable brands, manufacturers and other players in the market to outperform and gain a competitive edge once they identify and use the right tools.
According to Yariv Bustan, VP (Product & Marketing), Twine Solutions, with digital innovative technologies we can better plan and control our inventory and supply chain. He questioned that, can we also virtualize our inventory and enable it to manage itself…? Automatically "download" the right colors and the right quantity, on-demand and at the right time...?

Digitization has created space for new business models in the fashion industry. Looking at other design industries (specifically film industry) and the business models that emerged through digitization provides a lens for opportunities in fashion. Digital supermodels and influencers are taking over magazines, social media and editorials wearing digital clothing. eCommerce is about to revolutionize with new experiences that will tackle challenges that retailers face currently.
According to Kerry Murphy, Founder of 'The Fabricant', (Amsterdam based digital fashion house), they are going to present the work they’ve done this year exposing the challenges and opportunities their clients face with digital fashion content from their own digital fashion collections to complete digital retail experiences.

Wearable electronics are moving beyond wrist worn devices into other forms of apparel that collect data, analyze it, and act on the insight. According to Thomas Dawidczyk, Analyst, Lux Research Inc., these days, we explore how smart apparel is made smart via various means of sensor integration. Smart apparel can have sensors incorporated via weaving, printing or integration of standalone sensors, that will lead to varying levels of obtrusiveness, sensor function, flexibility, and wash-ability. While the sensor integration may vary, the subsequent development steps remain the same. However, all of this current innovation in hardware is being superseded by innovation in analytics and what kinds of insight can be provided by smart textiles and apparel. While the current focus may be around the hardware and materials the very near future focus will be more around the value that the device provides to the user and less about the specific hardware.
