Title: The Holy Qur'an
Post by: Shamim Ansary on August 29, 2010, 12:11:08 PM

The Qur'an is the name given by God Himself to the book revealed to the Holy Prophet of Islam, containing the final law for mankind. The word Qur'an means a book which is meant to be read. The word also means a book or message which is meant to be conveyed and delivered to all peoples. The Qur'an is the only revealed book whose delivery or message is absolutely unrestricted; for whereas all other books are meant for specific times and specific peoples, the Quran is meant for all times and all peoples (34:29).

2: 2. Alif, Lam, Mim.

2: 3. This is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is a guidance for the righteous,

56: 78. This is, indeed, a noble Qur'an,

56: 79. In a well-preserved Book.

98: 4. Wherein are lasting commandments.

39: 24. ALLAH has sent down the Best Discourse - a Book, whose verses are mutually supporting and repeated in diverse forms. The skins of those, who fear their Lord, do creep at its recital, then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of ALLAH. Such is the guidance of ALLAH. HE guides therewith whom HE pleases. And he whom ALLAH adjudges astray - he shall have no guide.

43: 2. Ha Mim.

43: 3. WE cite as evidence this perspicuous Book,

43: 4. WE have made it a Book to be oft read in clear, eloquent language that you may understand.

43: 5. And, surely, it is safe with US in the Mother of the Book, exalted and full of wisdom.

33: 73. Verily, WE have offered the trust of the Divine Law to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and were afraid of it. But man bore it. Indeed, he is capable of being unjust to, and neglectful of, himself.

33: 74. The consequence is that ALLAH will punish hypocritical men and hypocritical women, and idolatrous men and idolatrous women; and ALLAH turns in Mercy to believing men and believing women; and ALLAH is Most forgiving Merciful.

17: 89. Say, `If men and jinn should gather together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even though they should help one another.'

17: 90. And surely We have set forth for mankind in various ways all kinds of similitudes in this Qur'an, but most men would reject everything in respect of it but disbelief.

11: 18. Can he, then, who stands upon a clear proof from his Lord, and to testify to whose truth a witness from HIM shall follow him, and who was preceded by the Book of Moses, a guide and a mercy, be an imposter? Those who are the true followers of Moses believe therein, and whoever of the opposing parties disbelieve in it, the Fire shall be his promised place. So be not thou, O reader, in doubt about it. Surely, it is the truth from thy Lord; but most men believe not.

6: 93. And this is a Book which WE have revealed, full of blessings, to fulfil that which preceded it, and to enable thee to warn the Mother of towns and those around her. And those, who believe in the Hereafter, believe therein and they strictly observe their Prayers.

5: 4. Forbidden to you is the flesh of an animal which dies of itself, and blood and the flesh of swine; and that on which is invoked the name of any other than ALLAH; and that which has been strangled; and that which has been beaten to death; and that which has been killed by a fall and that which has been gored to death; and that of which a wild animal has eaten, except that which you have properly slaughtered; and that which has been slaughtered at an altar as an offering to idols. And forbidden is also this that you seek to know your lot by the divining arrows. That is an act of disobedience. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of harming your religion. So fear them not, but fear ME. This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed MY favour upon you and have chosen for you Islam as religion. But whoso is forced by hunger, without being wilfully inclined to sin, then, surely, ALLAH is Most Forgiving, and is Merciful.

6:156. And this is a Book which WE have sent down; full of blessings. So follow it, and guard against evils that you may be shown mercy,

17: 83. And WE gradually reveal of the Qur'an that which is healing and a mercy to believers; but it only adds to the loss of the wrongdoers.

Who created me, then He has shown me the way:

And He Who gives me to eat and gives me to drink:

And when I am sick, then He restores me to health

And He Who will cause me to die, then give me life;

And Who, I hope, will forgive me my mistakes on the day of judgment.

My Lord: Grant me wisdom, and join me with the good

And ordain for me a goodly mention among posterity

And make me of the heirs of the garden of bliss

And forgive my father, for surely he is of those who have gone astray;

And disgrace me not on the day when they are raised

The day on which property will not avail, nor sons

Except him/her who comes to Allah with a heart free (from evil).

The Qur'an is the holy book for Muslims, revealed in stages to the Prophet Muhammad over 23 years.

Qur'anic revelations are regarded by Muslims as the sacred word of God, intended to correct any errors in previous holy books such as the Old and New Testaments.

Origin:

The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by Allah in Arabic.

Some Qur'anic fragments have been dated as far back as the eighth, and possibly even the seventh, century. The oldest existing copy of the full text is from the ninth century.

Although early variants of the Qur'an are known to have existed, Muslims believe that the text we have today was established shortly after the death of the Prophet by the Caliph Uthman.
Contents

There are 114 chapters in the Qur'an, which is written in the old Arabic dialect.

All the chapters except one begin with the sentence Bismillahir rahmanir raheem, 'In the name of Allah the most merciful and the most kind'. This is the thought with which Muslims should start every action.

The longest chapter of the Qur'an is Surah Baqarah (The Cow) with 286 verses and the shortest is Surah Al-Kawther (abundance) which has 3 verses.

The arrangement of surahs does not correspond to the chronological order in which they were revealed.

The Qur'an is sometimes divided into 30 roughly equal parts, known as juz'. These divisions make it easier for Muslims to read the Qur'an during the course of a month and many will read one juz' each day, particularly during the month of Ramadan.

Translations:

Translations of the Qur'an exist in over 40 languages but Muslims are still taught to learn and recite it in Arabic, even if this is not their native language and they cannot converse in it.

Translations are regarded by Muslims as new versions of the holy book, rather than as translations in the conventional sense.

Memorising the Qur'an:

At the time of the revelation of the Qur'an, books were not readily available and so it was common for people to learn it by heart.

Committing the Qur'an to memory acted as a great aid for its preservation and any person who is able to accomplish this is known as a hafiz.

Respect:

The Qur'an is treated with immense respect by Muslims because it is the sacred word of God.

While the Qur'an is recited aloud, Muslims should behave with reverence and refrain from speaking, eating or drinking, or making distracting noise.

Sunnah and Hadith:

In addition to the Qur'an, the other sacred sources are the Sunnah, the practise and examples of the Prophet Muhammad's life, and the Hadith, reports of what the prophet Muhammad said or approved.

Both the Hadith and Sunnah must adhere to a strict chain of narration that ensures its authenticity, taking into account factors such as the character of people in the chain and continuity in narration. Reports that fail to meet such criteria will be disregarded.

One famous example is that of the scholar of Hadith literature, Imam Bukhari, who travelled several hundred miles on horseback to acquire a Hadith. When he arrived, he saw the man that knew the Hadith deceiving his donkey into thinking there was grain in a sack in order to induce him to move forward. Imam Bukhari promptly left without approaching the man because he was not willing to allow any individual with a questionable personality to join a chain of narration or contribute knowledge that would define the practice of the religion.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Said: Three Types Of People Attend Friday Prayer, One Is Present In A Frivolous Way And That Is All He Gets From It.. Another Comes With A Supplication, ALLAH May Grant Or Refuse His Request As He Wishes.. Another Is Present Silently And Quietly With-Out Stepping Over A Muslim Or Annoying An...yone, And That Is An Atonement For His Sins Till The Next Friday And Three Days More, The Reason Being That ALLAH, The Most High, The Exalted, Says : "He Who Does A Good Deed Will Have Ten Times As Much (Surah Al-An’am, Chapter : 6, Verse : 160).."

Allaah Almighty makes the compliance of wearing the HIJAAB a condition of chastity and modesty. He says: “O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That wil...l be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed...” (Qur’aan 33:59)

“And those who accuse chaste women [of adultery] and then do not produce four witnesses — lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient. Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed Allaah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

If a person makes an allegation of adultery against another person (male or female), only then he or she must produce four witnesses to support such an allegation: “And those who accuse chaste women [of adultery] and then do not produce four witnesses….”2; otherwise, he or she is guilty of slandering, which is a grave offense in Islam.

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.

"Do not treat people with contempt, nor walk insolently on the earth. Allah does not love the arrogant or the self-conceited boaster. Be modest in your bearing and subdue your voice, for the most unpleasant of voices is the braying of the ass." (The Holy Qur'an, Surah Luqman - 31:18-19)

"They question you about the Hour of Doom [O Mohammad], when will it come? But why should you be concerned with its exact timing? The final word concerning it belongs to your Lord. Your mission is merely to warn those who fear it. On the day when they see that hour, it will seem to them that their life on earth had spanned only one evening, or one morning."

    2. Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure,

    3. And when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.

    4. Think they not that they will be resurrected (for reckoning),

    5. On a Great Day,

    6. The Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)?

29. Verily! (During the worldly life) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.

30. And whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (in mockery);

31. And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting;

32. And when they saw them, they said: "Verily! These have indeed gone astray!"

33. But they (disbelievers, sinners) had not been sent as watchers over them (the believers).

34. But this Day (the Day of Resurrection) those who believe will laugh at the disbelievers

35. On (high) thrones, looking (at all things).

36. Are not the disbelievers paid (fully) for what they used to do?

Never think that we have reached the final stage of knowledge and nobody knows more than ourselves. Remember! Above everyone endowed with knowledge is another endowed with more knowledge [12:76]. Even the Prophet (pbuh) was asked to keep praying, "O My Sustainer! Advance me in knowledge."
