ODEM uses blockchain technology to connect students and educators with courses and programs to help remove obstacles to education, training, and employment. Their partnership with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), a polytechnic institute located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is an example of how blockchain technology can help increase academic record security and make educational records more accessible.

SAIT offers over 100 career programs and more than 1,300 continuing education and corporate training courses to greater than 200 companies annually but the traditional system of storing academic records ran the risk of students losing the paper documentation or even the entire database being compromised. This can cost the students and institution severely, both in time and money.

Through a pilot program placing 25 SAIT students’ Pre-Employment Automotive Service Technician certificates on blockchain, ODEM successfully provided the mechanism to protect SAIT’s records and gave students authority over their tamper-proof record of the diploma. Upon completing the successful pilot run, ODEM was able to serve an entire graduating class of over 4,800 SAIT students. This is the largest ever number of graduates at a Canadian institution with blockchain-based credentials.
