Title: Is Exercise Solution for Back Pain?
Post by: Anowar@UC on April 01, 2012, 12:18:28 PM
Exercises are considered one of the best way to cure back pain. The best way to cure a disease is to find the cause behind it. The pain might occur anywhere in the spinal cord. There are different regions of spinal cord where the pain can occur like lower back or upper back. The time for which the pain persists may also vary. Therefore the first step is to diagnose and find the particular region where the pain occurs. But the mere fact is that, there is no magical cure for such pain. We can work to reduce the pain and participate normally in day-to-day activities.

This can arise from lack of exercise, low physical activity, poor posture, bad form while lifting heavy objects or poor seated posture while commuting (especially over bad roads). Neglecting back pain can catapult into long term back problems.

The first thing to do is consult a specialist and he will guide you on the appropriate exercises. When someone has back pain, they must first consult their doctor to know which exercises are completely off limits and which are the ones that they can follow. In general, there are some exercises that should be best avoided for those with back pain. These would include situps, lying leg raises, standing toe touches, long distance jogging, etc.

It should be noted that avoiding exercise altogether is not the solution for back pain. Strengthening your body and developing your cardio system is a very efficient way to combat back pain. Core strengthening exercises and stretching will help to reduce back pain, similarly aerobic activities like walking and swimming are also a reliable option for those with back pain.

4 best golden rules to alleviate low back pain. It is important to not only alleviate low back pain but also learn how to not have a re-occurrence.

Golden Rule # 1, lose weight. The reasoning behind the importance of losing weight is excessive weight creates additional stress on the low back, especially abdominal fat. Remember, if you have additional fat in the abdomen region then the structures in your low back are required to support the extra weight. Over time this puts unnecessary stress on joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons creating small micro-traumas that can result in pain and discomfort.

Golden Rule # 2, strengthen abdominals. This is very important because the abdominal muscles should function like a corset holding ligaments, bones, joints and internal organs in place. Understand that if you abdominal muscles are weak then we hang off of our back muscles, joints and ligaments creating unnecessary stress on the low back.

Golden Rule # 3, Stretch your iliopsoas muscle. The iliopsoas is one of the main muscles in hip flexion. This means that every time you sit, walk, run, and ride a bike, the iliopsoas muscle is engaged and contracting. We do the above activities a lot. Those are just a few reason it is important to stretch your iliopsoas muscle daily and properly.

Golden Rule # 4, drink more filtered water. This not only combats against muscle spasms but also can help with organ referral to the low back from the colon and/or kidneys. Water is magic medicine to normalize dysfunction in these organs.
