I am giving below a sample argumentative writing for your better understanding. Hopefully, I will get response soon.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Telephones and email have made communication between people less personal.

I completely disagree with the statement that telephone and email have made communication between people less personal. Telephone and email are both important for communication purposes. All over the world everybody depends on telephone and email. Without them you can’t get in touch with people. Most of the offices depend on both of them. Life changes day to day so does the technology. For many reasons I believe telephone and email both are useful.

During the years technology brought significant changes in the everyday life. Telephone is necessary for every day conversation. Before the telephone people used to send letters through the post but it took so much time to reach and sometimes we could get lost of them. Now a days, people using telephone instead of letter because using telephone can save lot of time and you can get immediate response from the other side. At present I am living in USA but my whole family, relatives and friends are in Bangladesh. With telephone I can talk to my family and friends and have fun on the phone. With phone we can send picture, images and videos to our loved ones. In case of emergency telephone is useful to make a call and get help. Without telephone we lost contact to everyone.

Internet is a good way of communication. Through internet you can have the conversation face to face and email is the best way to get in touch with the people all over the world. It is also cheaper. Through email you can send images, photos and videos to your beloved ones. Some companies send information about interviews and offer letters through email. Using email you can read everyday news.

So based on the above all mentioned points telephone and email are both necessary for everyday life.

Dear Students and enthusiasts,
Answer the following question. Everyday you will get a new question to answer.

1) Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. Use specific reasons to support your answer.

don't have to vs mustn't[/color]

Don't have to = Do not have to

We use don't have to to say that there is no obligation or necessity to do something.

For example: "You don't have to do the exercises at the end of this page."

Mustn't = must not

We use mustn't to show that something is not allowed. When you use mustn't you are telling people not to do something. It has the same force as don't , as in: Don't do that!

For example: "You mustn't drink if you're going to drive."

English / Re: data vs datum

data vs datum

This isn't so much a common mistake as a common cause for arguments (as is often the case with words of Latin origin).

The dictionaries treat data as a group noun, meaning information, especially facts or numbers, collected for examination and consideration and used to help decision-making, or meaning information in an electronic form that can be stored and processed by a computer.

Then they go on to confuse matters by giving the following kind of example:-

The data was/were reviewed before publishing.

So, which is it, was or were? Strictly speaking 'datum' is the singular form and 'data' is the plural form.

If you're writing for an academic audience, particularly in the sciences, "data" takes a plural verb.

For example:-

The data are correct.

But most people treat 'data' as a singular noun, especially when talking about computers etc.

For example:-

The data is being transferred from my computer to yours.

And I have to be honest, I've never heard anyone ask for a datum.

Subject and Verb Agreement
________________________________________
The subject and verb must agree in number: both must be singular, or both must be plural. Problems occur in the present tense because one must add an -s or -es at the end of the verb when the subjects or the entity performing the action is a singular third person: he, she, it, or words for which these pronouns could substitute.
Notice the difference between singular and plural forms in the following examples:
Singular    Plural
The student sings. (He or she sings)   Your children sing. (They sing)
The bird does migrate. (It does)    Those birds do migrate. (They do)
In order to find out if your subject and verb agree, you need to be able to identify the subject of your sentence. Here are some helpful hints that will help you to decipher where your subject is and where it is not.
________________________________________
Where is my subject?
•   Most likely, your verb will agree with the first noun to the left of the verb:
The Supreme Court judge decides the appropriate penalty.
Subject: judge   Verb: decides
The committee members were satisfied with the resolution.
Subject: members   Verb: were
•   Occasionally, a sentence has the subject after the verb instead of before it. This strategy is often used for poetic effect.
Over the ripples glides a small canoe.
Subject: a small canoe   Verb: glides
There was a well-known writer at the meeting.
Subject: a well-known writer   Verb: was
•   You will not find the subject in a modifying phrase (MP), a phrase that starts with a preposition, a gerund, or a relative pronoun and that modifies the meaning of the noun or subject under discussion.
The group of students is going on a field trip.
Subject: the group   MP: of students   Verb: is
The survey covering seven colleges reveals a growth in enrollment.
Subject: the survey   MP: covering seven colleges    Verb: reveals
The speaker whom you saw at the lecture is one of the state senators from Minnesota.
Subject: the speaker   MP: whom you saw at the lecture   Verb: is
•   If subjects are joined by and, they are considered plural.
The quarterback and the coach are having a conference.
Subject: the quarterback and the coach   Verb: are having
•   If subjects are joined by or or nor, the verb should agree with the closer subject.
Either the actors or the director is at fault.
Subjects: actors, director   Verb: is
Either the director or the actors are at fault.
Subjects: director, actors   Verb: are
•   The relative pronouns (who, whom, which, and that) are either singular or plural, depending on the words they refer to.
The sales manager is a good researcher who spends a great amount of time surfing the Web for information.
Subject: the sales manager   Verbs: is, spends
Sales managers are good researchers who spend a great amount of time surfing the Web for information.
Subject: sales managers   Verbs: are, spend
•   Indefinite pronouns (someone, somebody, each, either one, everyone, or anyone) are considered singular and need singular verbs although they convey plural meaning.
Anyone who wants to pursue higher education has to pass entrance exams.
Subject: anyone   Verbs: wants, has
Everyone on the committee is welcome to express his/her ideas.
Subject: everyone   Verb: is
•   A few nouns can be either plural or singular, depending on whether they mean a group or separate individuals. These words are rarely used as plurals in modern writing.
The jury is sequestered.
Subject: jury   Verb: is
The jury are having an argument.
Subject: jury   Verb: are having
•   A few subjects look plural but are really singular or vice versa.
The news of the discovery is spreading.
Subject: news   Verb: is
The mass media have publicized the facts.
Subject: mass media   Verb: have publicized
The data amaze everyone.
Subject: data   Verb: amaze

English / LISTENING ENGLISH COMPETITION
« on: February 12, 2012, 12:15:37 PM »
Listening competition

Dear students,
I have decided to bring you a new type of activity. I know how tedious it can be to work on your own doing one exercise after another. It gets boring, even though you are really motivated to learn English. How different the computer games are! They are competitive and you can be better than your friends. That is why I have decided to start a listening competition.
The aim of this competition is to give you a chance to compare your listening comprehensibility with that of other students. There will be 3 phases: PRE LISTENING: where you will guess the story after having a look at the vocabulary, WHILE LISTENING: listen to the story and check out whether your guess is right or not, POST LISTENING: finally solve the MCQ (Multiple Choice Question). Through this competition you will be able to see how well you perform.
Thus you should get motivated to do more tasks and improve your listening skill.

There are three prizes for the first, second and third best listeners.

RULES:

1. To ensure your participation you are to fill a form.
2. The forms will be available from Feb-15, 2012 at English Department Office, Prince Plaza, DIU
