Job description:
Motivation.Testing is an important means to assess and improve the quality of ICT systems. At the same time, testing is costly and time consuming, often consuming 50% of the development budget. The goal of the BEAT project is to improve test effectiveness and efficiency by using mathematical game theory, yielding higher system quality at lower costs.
Approach.Testing is naturally phrased as a game, where the tester tries to find faults, playing against the system-under-test (SUT). Also, testing is by nature an optimization problem, asking for a test suite with maximal impact within a given budget.
Aim of the BEAT project is to develop a model-based testing framework that allows one to automatically derive an optimal test suite for a wide range of optimality criteria, including cost, impact, coverage, and risk.
Scientific challenges are (1) to phrase the model-based test theory in terms of mathematical games, so that test cases coincide with game strategies. (2) to develop game-theoretic strategy synthesis algorithms for test optimization (3) to implement these algorithms in our test tool JTorX and perform quantitative assessment of our framework on realistic case studies, provided by industrial partners like Axini, ProRail and Sogeti.
For more information about the project, see: http://fmt.cs.utwente.nl/research/projects/BEAT/

Research on software testing has resulted in many innovative technologies, for example automating tedious tasks such as test case generation for object-oriented software. However, demonstrating scientific advance is not necessarily the same as demonstrating practical value: A technology that works well on small, artificial problems as often used in research papers might not scale up to the complexity of real systems. It is hence essential to use large “real-world” case studies to minimize the threats to external validity when evaluating research tools. However, neither choosing such case studies nor applying research prototypes to them are trivial tasks. We created a large statistically sound case study on open source software, and applied the EVOSUITE test generation tool on it in order to shed light on three important questions: First, what is the state of the art in test generation? Second, what are the challenges in applying research tools to real-world code? Third, what are the problems in selecting representative case studies? Our case study is the SF110 corpus: a collection of 100 Java projects randomly selected from SourceForge plus the 10 most popular projects on SourceForge, totaling up to 19,509 classes with more than 700 thousand bytecode level branches. Although EVOSUITE achieved an average bytecode branch coverage of 60% on this case study, the main challenges in covering code do unexpectedly lie in limitations that have been largely ignored in the literature: e.g., handling of files and network sockets. This large and statistically valid corpus lets us analyze statistical correlations between the performance of a testing tool and the chosen case study. One such (counterintuitive) correlation result is that the larger an application is, the easier it is to automatically generate unit tests for its classes.

Science and Information / About the Black Box Software Testing Courses
« on: March 26, 2014, 06:47:10 PM »
   These courses in software testing are available to AST members.
   We will accept up to 25 students on a first-come, first-served basis for each course offering.
   Each AST-BBST course includes video lectures, quizzes, homework of various kinds, and a final exam. All of the homework, and the exam, are peer-reviewed. Every participant in the course reviews work submitted by other participants and provides feedback and suggests grades.
   Each course lasts 3 weeks, plus 1 additional week for the exam. You should expect to spend at least 12 – 14 hours per week on the course. If you cannot dedicate this much time, please allow someone else to take the course instead.
   To take the course, you MUST agree to two policies:
   AST Course Site Acceptable Use Policy
   Intellectual Property Policy for the Black Box Software Testing Courses
   The Intellectual Property policy reflect the fact that while we teach these courses, we are doing detailed research on how to improve the teaching of software testing. In joining the course, you are agreeing to participate in an experiment (the course).
   It is essential that you review these policies before starting the course. If you do not agree to the policies, you cannot participate, because these policies govern your interaction with the other participants in the course.
The research underlying this course has been partially funded by grants from the National Science Foundation. Current NSF funding comes from NSF CCLI Award No. 0717613, “Adaptation & Implementation of an Activity-Based Online or Hybrid Course in Software Testing.” The views expressed in this course are those of the authors and instructors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSF.
Foundations
Begin your professional development with AST by enrolling in the Foundations course. This first course (a prerequisite for all other courses in the series) is a basic introduction to black box testing. It presents basic terminology and considers:
   the mission of testing
   the oracle problem
   the measurement problem
   the impossibility of complete testing

Bug Advocacy
Sharpen your bug reporting skills with the Bug Advocacy course. (Successful completion of the Foundationscourse is required). Bug reports are not just neutral technical reports. They are persuasive documents. The key goal of the bug report author is to provide high-quality, well-written, information to help stakeholders make wise decisions about which bugs to fix when. Key aspects of the content of this course include:
   Defining key concepts (such as software error, quality, and the bug processing workflow)
   the scope of bug reporting (what to report as bugs, and what information to include)
   Bug reporting as persuasive writing
   Bug investigation to discover harsher failures and simpler replication conditions
   Excuses and reasons for not fixing bugs
   Making bugs reproducible
   Lessons from the psychology of decision-making: bug-handling as a multiple-decision process dominated by heuristics and biases
   Style and structure of well-written reports
Test Design
Our third course in the BBST® Online Education series is Test Design.   Good testing requires application of many test techniques. Each technique is better at exposing some types of problems and weaker for others. Participants will look at a few techniques more closely than the rest but do not become skilled practitioners of any single technique.
Course Objectives
   Gain familiarity with a variety of test techniques
   Learn structures for comparing objectives and strengths of different test techniques
   Use the Heuristic Test Strategy Model for test planning and design
   Use concept mapping tools for test planning
The course uses cases and scenarios distinguishing between early testing and later, more knowledgeable testing. Techniques emphasized include function testing, risk-based testing, specification-based testing, and domain testing.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of the Foundations course is required.
Instructor Course Online
The Association for Software Testing is always looking for good instructors! This online workshop will use presentations and hands-on exercises to address the challenges of teaching online with particular focus on the methodology used in the BBST®. We accept up to 25 students on a first-come, first-served basis and provide login information for the course about 4 days prior to it’s start date.
BBST® Instructors Course Online: You’ve taken AST’s software testing courses. Now find out how you can get involved in teaching these for AST, for your company, or independently. You’ll learn how the AST BBST® course developers merged instructional theory and assessment theory to develop the AST BBST® online instructional model. This workshop satisfies the Instructors’ Orientation Course requirement for prospective AST-certified instructors.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Foundations.
Key aspects of this course include:
   Course Structure and Flow of a BBST® class
   Course Components
   Overview of Instructor’s Tasks
   Effective Communication and Feedback Strategies
   Assessments and Grading Strategies

Teaching & Research Forum / Skype Interview
« on: March 26, 2014, 06:35:09 PM »
This suggestion/Discussion is taken from our HSA FB group.

Samiul Azam Shobuz,
for Duke University
Faced a Skype Interview few minutes ago. Question was 1. What is your research interest? 2. What research experience have you got? 3. Do you have any teaching experience? 4. Do you know any graduate student in our University? 5. How you heard about us? 5. Are you familiar with PhD course requirement? After they gave lecture about their University and PhD program. They are very friendly. Interview duration was 31 minutes.

Skype Interview faced by another person
1. Why you have selected this university?
2. What is your research interest?
3. What research experiences you got?
4. What are you doing currently? (If you are doing job) what is your job profile?
5. Which university you've passed from?
6. What is your future plan?

March 26, 2013
1. How have you learned about this University?
2. I see you are employed, What is your job responsibility?
3. In your undergrad research, you have done theritical models, have you developed any computational model? Which Software?
4. I work on Computational Models, It takes both Mathmatics and Enginerring? Which courses have you taken on these? Are you experienced with (.......) software? What level?
5. Are feel intersted to research such field?
6. Do you know about weather here?
7. How long does it takes to get Student Visa in BD? We usually issue I-20 in late april.
8. I would be happy to answer your queries, I think you have some.

Hasmat Ullah ( October 30, 2012)
I have faced a Skype interview on University of Houston Last night. I got a set of questions for interviews from my seniors and got most of the questions from these. I am sharing the list of questions for those who are going to face Skype interview. I think you'll get around 80% questions from this list

1. Why you have selected this university?
2. What is your research interest?
3. What research experiences you got?
4. What are you doing currently? (If you are doing job) what is your job profile?
5. Which university you've passed from?
6. What is your future plan?

Tips: Before facing interview, check professor's research interests and read all of his/her published papers. They may ask any relevant question about your research interest but they wouldn't ask lot of questions from your books.

Hasib Ayon
I have had several skype interviews with professors in the last few months. From my experience,
1st, they ask why I am interested in their work and why.
2nd, he will go through your CV very thoroughly which means they will ask you about your papers/ any specific project/ language/ tool that you use.
3rd, he might go through your transcript and ask what you have studied/ implemented in lab on several courses which are related to his field of interest. Finally, he might ask you 10/15 basic questions on those subjects (BTW it is very rare). So try to be clear with him about your contribution on your publication/project/thesis. Also try to have a clear idea about the basic conceptual ideas of those subjects. Best of Luck. BTW, which country and which university and what is his AOE?

Alienqueen Marwah
PROF. actually asked me some general ques. he asked me d reasons 4 applyng to that prgm, chosng tht subject, my research experience, objective, applications of my work. wt i ll do in order to extend my project to make it suitable 4 thesis or doctoral progrm. at d very begnng of my study wt i read abt science tht drive me 2 study bio. why i choose to be Genetic eng bt not a lawyer or mech eng. and many more.

Md Milon Hossain
My case was different. My prof (Canada) first asked me some formal question like name, location, time in BD (Dhaka) etc. Then he told me to open my CV on computer and he also opened my CV (sent with first mail)on his comp. then he asked everything from my CV like my publications, work experience sequentially (did not miss a single point). Then he asked me "are you comfortable in writing report?" you have to write your progress regularly. Then what is your future planning?. The interview was 37 mins long.

Md Abu Manju
I have an experience facing the same skype interview. Don't be worried and try to make a good preparation about your own papers and if they sent any papers to you. Try to answer only the questions they will ask not any more. Good luck for you. Also try to make preparation about the topics that they stated in the application when you applied for this position. I think you will be success and take it as a simple matter....

Iftekhar Alam Rinku
Recently I have faced a skype interview. Please have a close look on your own research activities (e.g. Thesis/Research papers). In case of me, professors asked several questions related to my master thesis and journal papers. They were also curious about the software I used in my research. Please don't be pressured. Just be relaxed and try to talk with him naturally. Wish you all the very best...

Masud Hussain Junior
As all others suggested, focus on your own research experiences/works. I faced an interview recently, where the main questions were:
1. Details of two research works that I mentioned in SOP
2. What is my current specific research interest?
3. What job I am doing and my responsibilities there.
4. Why am I choosing that university?
5. Why am I pursuing Ph.D.?

So, you can mostly prepare answers for these types of questions.

Anik Iqbal
skype interview is quite common. nothing to worry about. just remind yourself of what your qualifications and career goals are. recall what you wrote in your SOP. they will ask you questions and you will answer them as best as you can. it will basically be like chatting. don't feel scared, professors are very friendly.

Fazlur Rahman Tuhin
I can share my experience, I am from different background though. it was really comfortable...they did not ask me any scientific/difficult question..but wanted to know about me..what kind of person I am, my strength. weakness, why did I apply to that particular university and that particular program, which labs I am interested in and why, what preparation I took to pursue PhD, what is my motivation, what is my ultimate plan in my career..more other questions I forgot..I would say like Mohiuddin Ahmed just be relax and comfortable..be clear about your research interest. know the labs well in which you are interested in..

Saeed Sabbir(06 dec 2013)
Had a 30 minute conversation last night with two professors of Michigan State. Just want to share. There were some specific questions like

1. Describe study and working background
2. Specific experience about landscape ecology and hydrology
3. Which tools I have used for analysis in GIS and RS
4. What I expect from graduate study
5. What is my future plan
6. Which attracts me most of the project and
7. How do I feel to work in a team (with example)

Hope that it will help. Cheers...

Ahmedul Kabir
I am telling this from my own experience ... They like to chit-chat first, make u comfortable before getting serious. Then they ask u about ur experiences: projects/theses that u have done that are relevant to his field. He asks about your future research plans or interests. He also allows you to ask questions about his own research, or the program at his University. In my case, he gave me a problem and asked me how I would solve it. They're generally very helpful, and do not try to embarrass you in any way. Just be confident, do some research on the type of things the Prof likes to do, prepare a couple of questions to ask him, and revise the basics of the subject of your interest.

Noyon Azad
I have had two of those skype interview experience. And I have done pretty well on both occasion. What I did, I just gone through the research topic on which the professors were working on. I searched relevant article on google scholar, wiki. So, when the actual interview happened, I was not in the dark at all. I tried to answer question in short and brief and to the point. I never tried to pretend of knowing anything which I didn't know. I hope this helps. Cheers

Ziaul Haq Adnan
Iowa State University (Dept. Industrial and System Engineering). Fall 2014
Scheduled time was 15 min only
2 professors sitiing.
Let us fix the camera. I am dr.. and I am dr..We r going take a short interview where you have to share some of your background and why are you interested in our school.
My answer:……
We see, you have a journal paper , in which you are the second author. What was your exact contribution to that research? Either literature review or methodology?
In which area you want to do further research.
It is a vast area. Can u specify any topic?
What is your career goal after completing phd?
What is your favourite subject?
What is your least favorite subject?
Have u ever worked as a RA or TA?
Do you have any question for us?
The admission decision is a long process. We have to decide about your admission and funding whether RA or TA. It should take about 2 weeks. Thank you very much .

What is the minimum score of IELTS for USA university ?
Answer: 6.5 is required in most universities as minimum score but 7 is riskless.

Can anybody give me the idea regarding the Procedure to send official Ielts Score to universities ??

Answer : You can send it directly from British Council.Take the photocopy ofyour IELTS result and take the address of the university you are planning tosend your result. You have to fill up a form and can send it by regular mail orExpress (DHL, Fedex.....etc). For regular you don't need to pay which may takearound a month but u have to pay for express which will take only 3 businessdays. The cost is now TK3000 (Previously TK2500). Please re-check whether yourresults have reached to your destined university. Sometimes it goes after thedeadline, so please check either it goes within deadline.

Which one is better for IELTS British Council or IDP?

As far as i know IDP and British Council are same.IELTSmaintain a standard so don't bother about exam center. There is a chance ofgetting foreign examiner in your speaking test in BC(there is a saying, foreignexaminer give good mark on speaking test).

Everyone have their own experience so if you ask 15 people 7will be with BC,6 will be with IDP OR 7 will be with IDP, 6 will be with BC.Atthe end it will confused you, just choose one.
Don't be confused with exam center.

IELTS Registration, Preparation and Examination

Registration:
What you need:
13800tk
Full Photocopy/1st 7 pages copy of your Passport (MRP/Old ones)
Online access for registration and then printout of the last/summary page
Now go to Standard Chattered Service 1 bank. I went to Uttara branch in Sector 6. The sweet receptionist will give you a 4-page bank slip that you will need to complete. Then take a token and wait for payment. The cashier will take 2 slips and give you two. Then attach 3rd slip with clear photocopy of passport and your summary page printout and drop in the service 1 booth available in the right corner of the room and take the last slip (pink) with you.
You will get completed registration email in 1-2 days.

Preparation:

I passed my engineering in 29 January, 2014 and I thought it was the time to finally sit the IELTS.
My target was 6.5 (individually 6.5 in each section) so that I could apply in my selected universities in Canada.

What I did:

I completed IELTS Cambridge 8 and 9. I had done all listening modules and reading modules in these two books. I highly recommend anyone that you should complete IELTS 6-9. And about other books, they contain much harder test and listening sections which are irrelevant. I registered on 5 Feb and gave my exam on 26 Feb (speaking) and 1 March. So my Prep time was about 20 days.

I just want to say who watches movies and English TV series regularly, his/her standard of English is already much better than the average Bangladeshis. I highly oppose the idea of being admitted into coaching centers provided that you watch programs regularly.

I had only 20 days prep while I also was taking MSc classes regularly (5 days a week). So finding the time is upon you. One thing I must suggest to you that when you start to practice the reading section, you should complete the whole 3 section at once. I didn’t do that and I suffered from lack of attention and tolerance during the final test. So you must try to practice the reading section one at a time.

Another thing is that coaching centers/strategy guides says you to “skim” through the passage or first look at the questions first and skim. Well, I am against this idea. I suggest:
You thoroughly read passage 1 and 2
Then you apply skim for passage 3.
That way you can answer P1 and P2 with full attention and sufficient accuracy and allot less risks to last passage which most of the time is the easier one.

About listening section, it is the easiest part of IELTS and also tricky too. You know that Q31-40 tends to be the toughest. Well, it depends. If they are MCQ, then you need to apply more attention. In case of map questions, try to write the full list of tasks in question booklet, because, if you don’t you will lose track of your answers. The other answers tend to be easy.

Now for writing section, I followed www.ielts-exam.net and ielts mentor heavily. I read about 80 WR 1 tasks from IELTS-EXAM and all tasks from IELTS 6 -9. I tried to find synonyms of commonly used vocabs and the linkers. And also I used alternative forms of sentence rather than the forms given in the IELTS Cambridge answer sheets. For Task 2, I also followed IELTS EXAM 160 tasks. I am preparing a PDF Book that contains all the tasks (240 tasks in total) for making your study easier.

For speaking sections, I generated many examples from IELTS MENTOR website. But the ideas were in terms of my life. Don’t try to memorize in this section. Try to involve you real life conditions because you will never find any common answers in the real exam. Actually, I don’t talk much, so my hope for this section was not much higher.

EXAM:

You will receive your ielts speaking test center venue, time, and your Candidate ID no. about 5 days before your final exam and 2 days before your speaking exam. Speaking usually takes place 2-4 days before the final. My exam was in Bengal Inn in Gulshan 1. I heard most of the candidates gave speaking test there.

When you reach at the specified location in your given time, you will need to report yourself to representatives there (1st floor). They will check your passport and will tell you to sign to check in. Then they will take your photo with fingerprint of your index finger. Then they will assign you to a room in 2nd floor.

I got appointed to room 207 where an old lady was my examiner. The test will be recorded. There will be 3 sections. In S1, I was asked several questions about my hometown, cooking at home, and dictionary – online vs physical. It took about 5 mins, but it may vary as I was very nervous at the time. Then in S2, I was asked to describe a park in my town. Then in S3 there were many follow up questions regarding environmental impacts of parks/gardens in the city. I ran out of words after taking for 2 mins in S2, still the lady told me to keep going on. And I also ran out of words in 1 question in S3. Still the overall test was good.

Then on March 1, I arrived in Basundhara Concention Center 2 on 1000 hours. You should see the seat arrangement of candidates by the side of the road there. Then you will be asked to submit any electronic devices and sheets you have to the representatives there. Then you will searched again regarding the same issue. Then you will be verified by your fingerprint and passport. Then you may proceed to exam hall.

The first test will be listening. BC has good headphones and you will get about 20-25 trials to check if your headphone is working correctly or not. So no problem there. Apart from section 2, all other sections were easy. Section 2 contained geographic map and event map. You will also have additional 10 mins for transferring your answer.

Reading test will take place for 1 hour with 3 sections. In my case, the first section was very easy. But section 2 was taken from psychology journal and 3rd passage was from also a controversial issue about exposure of children to advertisement. The P2 and P3 was in particular very hard. But you should remember, correcting 38 doesn’t always mean 8.5 out of 9. Sometimes 34-35 correct answers mean 8.5. So you just have to concentrate on the task in hand.

Then about writing test, you can take notes in writing question booklets. In T1, I had a stacked bar graph about present and projected and previous populations in 3 megacities. I took implications from the graph and represented and compared various data and also compared the anomaly in the graph and used a lot of alternative vocabs and used a lot of complex sentences. In T2, I was told to discuss the issue that many resource are used to explore space, which could be used to improve standard of living in earth. One thing is that never repeat the question. You must come up with idea/line that only reflects the statement. I wrote about 350 words containing a lot of linkers, convoluted vocabs and supporting ideas, examples and contradictory ideas. The last thing to do is that never agree or disagree on the writing task. Always mediate between two arguments.

Then they will give some instructions about the results and then you may leave the hall.

Then on 14 March, I got my result in the afternoon.

I was expecting 6.5 as I thought my reading test had gone very badly. But to my surprise, I scored a 7.5 band (R-8, L-8, W-7.5, S-6.5).

Then I collected my certificate today from Fuller road, You must take your passport with you and sign there and they will give you the certificate, rather known as TRF, in beautiful and strong envelope.

You can send your score electronically upto 5 universities free of cost in 42 days after the result. The DHL/FEDeX will cost 2500Tk/address if done before 6 months after exam and 3000Tk/address afterwards. Every procedure can be done from BC in fuller road.

The reason I wrote this experience was:
To eliminate the element of surprise for new exam takers.
To eliminate as much as confusion.
To provide some tricks that was very useful to me.
To let everybody know, IELTS is not a test of vocabulary.

I just hope this was useful and I am preparing a complete PDF for writing task as I know many students in our country suffer in this section. I will provide about 240 essays.

Thanks you.

Regards,
Sumon Datta

My fascination for being a scientist started to grow higher from school, when I was working with my classmates to submit a science project in the National Science fair for the first time in my life. We submitted a project entitled “Living on the Mars,” in which we showed a model of a city with all the necessary equipment for the survival of human beings. The fair was held for three days, and there was something during that period that brought about a significant change in my thinking. I can recollect that the chief guest Dr. Md. Zafar Iqbal hailed us as the future scientists of our country. I was then sitting in the middle of the contestants in the auditorium and dreaming of becoming a scientist like him.
During my twelve years of school, I was always among the top of my school, especially in physics and mathematics. But I wanted to study in such a diverse field in which I can apply all the theoretical knowledge of science, so I choose Mechanical Engineering for the undergraduate study. I sat for the admission test and secured my position in the “Department of Mechanical Engineering” of “Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET)”, one of the most prominent public universities in Bangladesh.
At KUET, I was introduced to the great sphere of mechanical engineering. I was taught several fundamental courses that gave me comprehensive knowledge in each of the fields. During my sophomore and junior years, I found myself becoming more and more interested in mechanical designing, production technology, material science and automobile engineering. Besides, the things that interested me most were the projects conducted by the seniors of our department. I saw them working for hours in the labs; they always tried to come up with a solution and implemented their ideas into practice. I volunteered them every now and then, and hoped to develop myself to be a keen researcher like them. During my undergraduate project, I had to encounter a challenging project on the “Design and Construction of a Briefcase Body by Die Casting” under the supervision of Dr. Md. Syed Ali Molla. I had to design the die, design the plastic melting chamber, set up the process to make the desired products. As it was beyond any conventional process, it was hard for me to find such relevant references. I had to fix all the design parameters on my own. However, the most challenging task was to design and construct the melting chamber. My teammates and I re-designed the melting chamber for plastics and implemented some innovative techniques to prevent casting defects. We were able to make the desired product but there were some defects in it. So our job was to study about those defects and suggest the proper techniques to prevent them. My project work was highly admired by my supervisor, and he encouraged me a lot to be engaged in research activities in the future.Highly inspired by my professors and friends, I started to visualize myself as a research professional. I evaluated myself in a different way and tried to figure out the specific fields in which I could do excellent research activities in the future.
During my 3rd year, I helped one of my seniors in doing some experiments in metallurgy lab. The research work was about analyzing the material fatigue and I did hardness testing of the given specimens. That work helped me to learn about the fatigue failure of metals. I was always looking for an opportunity to work in similar research project. Finally, I got a chance to work with one of my mentor Mr. Riaz Uddin Ahmed, assistant professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering, on Crack Propagation Analysis. Now I am learning to use Cohesive Zone Modeling (CZM) approach in ANSYS. We will use this technique to investigate crack propagation. I believe with our hard work and devotion, we will make a good progress towards our goal.
I had a plan to pursue my higher studies in USA as it not only provides the best environment for studies, but also has a lot of researchers available to collaborate with in several fields of Mechanical Engineering. I started looking for scope and found that the “University of North Dakota” is renowned for its tremendous graduate programs and prominent research facilities. I have made contact with Dr. Matthew Cavalli, Associate Professor and Chair Department of Mechanical Engineering, to look for any opportunity to work with him. I have made a detailed investigation about his current work on diffusion bonding of metals. His current work on diffusion bonding made me interested to work with him. Moreover, my intention to work with him got higher when I came to know about his past research work on Cohesive Zone Modeling of Structural Joint Failure. I believe that we will make a best research team together and our work will provide remarkable contributions in the field of materials science.
