Software Engineering / Google's mobile OS: Android O
« on: May 12, 2017, 08:46:40 PM »
Google's mobile OS, Android, is due for an update. Now in its eighth major iteration, you can get a peek of the OS with the Android O developer preview (which was available in March). Some of our favorite features include improved battery life, picture-in-picture and the ability to snooze notifications. Expect to learn more about the update, including of course, its full foodie name.

Likewise, don't expect to see the next Pixel phones at I/O. Though the successors will most likely run Android O, Google will probably unveil them later in the fall, around October.

Scientists in Newcastle have developed a cheap way of helping amputees with prosthetic limbs reach out and grasp objects - a bionic "hand that sees". The hand was developed by bioengineers at Newcastle University who modified a standard NHS myoelectric hand with a cheap camera to provide upper-limb amputees with a more functional prosthetic.

Myoelectric hands allow amputees to make their prosthetics express different grips using sensors on the skin surface of the stump which detect the electrical activity of wearers' muscles. With the added camera, which the researchers say they purchased for 99p, the new device bypasses the usual processes of gripping with a myoelectric hand, which require the user to see the object, physically stimulate the muscles in their arm and trigger a movement in the prosthetic limb. The wearer points the camera at the object they want to grasp, tenses their arm muscles and the prosthetic controller automatically recognizes the shape and adopts the correct grip to pick it up.

To achieve this the Newcastle team had to teach the prosthetic controller how to recognize different shapes and select which grip to use.
"We would show the computer a picture of, for example, a stick," explained Ghazal Ghazaei, the lead author behind the research, which was published today in the Journal of Neural Engineering. "But not just one picture, many images of the same stick from different angles and orientations, even in different light and against different backgrounds and eventually the computer learns what grasp it needs to pick that stick up.

"So the computer isn't just matching an image, it's learning to recognise objects and group them according to the grasp type the hand has to perform to successfully pick it up.

"It is this which enables it to accurately assess and pick up an object which it has never seen before - a huge step forward in the development of bionic limbs." Dr Kianoush Nazarpour, the paper's co-author and a senior lecturer in biomedical engineering at Newcastle University, said: "Using computer vision, we have developed a bionic hand which can respond automatically. "Just like a real hand, the user can reach out and pick up a cup or a biscuit with nothing more than a quick glance in the right direction.

"Responsiveness has been one of the main barriers to artificial limbs. For many amputees the reference point is their healthy arm or leg so prosthetics seem slow and cumbersome in comparison. "Now, for the first time in a century, we have developed an 'intuitive' hand that can react without thinking." A small number of amputees have already trialled the new technology, including Doug McIntosh, who lost his right arm in 1997 through a rare form of cancer called epithelial sarcoma. "The problem is there's nothing yet that really comes close to feeling like the real thing," explained the father-of-three who lives in Westhill, Aberdeen, with his wife of 32 years, Diane. But the new responsive hand being developed in Newcastle is a "huge leap forward," he said.

Microsoft is planning to allow developers to add bots to the company's Bing search results. The software giant has been testing this functionality for at least a month, and previous reports revealed the testing was mainly limited to Seattle. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans tell The Verge the company is ready to expand this further at its Build developer event next week.

Microsoft published its Build schedule this week, and one particular session reveals "you can add your custom bots to Bing." The existing bot test on can be found by searching for a restaurant like Monsoon in Seattle. A new option lets you chat with the restaurant through a Skype bot, and you can ask questions like opening hours or parking information.

Microsoft originally launched its bots platform at Build last year, and custom bots on will be a new way to extend these further outside of Skype and Microsoft's own bots platform. We're expecting to hear a lot more about Bing's bots at Build next week.

There are all sorts of vending machines out there in the world (just browse r/vendingmachineporn for a glimpse) but this particular one in Intel’s research and development center seems particularly geeky and endearing. Reddit user Glumbot says a friend spotted the machine inside Intel’s Folsom, Calif. office — it is used to dispense computer parts and supplies without requiring employees to request them from their IT department and wait for items to arrive.

The touchscreen machine, which runs on Intel’s Core i5 vPro processor and uses Intel’s AIM (Audience Impression Metric) suite, is also used to keep track of product inventory. Employees can use the self-service machine to “buy” parts by scanning their work ID and the cost is automatically charged to their department. Things you can buy include batteries, mice, flash drives, keyboards, cable locks, and laptop AC adaptors, according to a vending machine trade publication which covered its release in 2013.

So it’s not a new machine by any means, but it’s a pretty fun look into office culture at tech companies and their unique ways to increase workflow efficiency. (Mozilla’s offices have one too, albeit not a touchscreen.) My favorite part of all this is the gigantic sign next to the machine that lists simple instructions for Intel employees on how to operate a vending machine.

With all of Snapchat and Facebook’s recent talk of mixed and augmented reality, it’s easy to forget that the tech has been used for industrial, military, and medical work for decades. One recent, pretty cool example comes from surgical tech company Scopis, which just launched a Microsoft HoloLens program for spine surgery. You can watch the video above, but essentially, it provides a hands-free display and an overlay that indicates exactly where the surgeon should operate.

Augmented reality is actually considered a pretty obvious fit for surgeons, because it offers a hands-free and seamless way to access digital information while performing delicate operations, even via something as limited as Google Glass. HoloLens has the added benefit of projecting images that seem to exist in physical space as well. It’s interesting to note, however, that the system doesn’t totally rely on Microsoft’s internal tracking sensors. You can see little constellations of rigid-body markers on the headset and tools, offering a greater guarantee of precise tracking — which, I assume, is particularly important when you’re operating on someone’s spine.

Software Engineering / How to Search by Image on Google
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:33:48 AM »
Everyone knows how to use Google Image Search that lets you quickly find images on the Internet. But not everyone knows about search by image, that can help you in a wide variety of cases. Sometimes you want to search for the sources of images, or maybe you have an image on your computer or found one online, and you want a high-resolution version or want to check if someone has posted it online. Or perhaps you want to check the authenticity of the latest WhatsApp forward you received. Or you have a picture of a table, and you'd like to buy the same one; or you've seen a picture of a cartoon character you are not able to recognise. These are all scenarios where Google’s Search by Image tool can be handy.

We’ve used search by image feature multiple times to check if people have pasted our images on other websites. We’ve also been using it to look for images similar to the ones we find online or some that are stored on our computer. Google’s search by image works quite well and often you’ll find a much better high-resolution version of the image you have, which is always good news.

Here is the link which you can follow for this purpose:

If you consistently find yourself at places with spotty Internet connectivity - when commuting to work or at home, for instance - and you love watching videos, then YouTube's offline feature is aimed at you. The feature allows YouTube users to continue to enjoy their favourite videos on their Android and iOS devices even when there is no usable network connection. Here's what the YouTube's offline feature is all about, and how you can make use of it.
Launched in 2014, YouTube's offline feature allows Android and iOS users to save YouTube videos to their device for later consumption. These videos can be downloaded via mobile data or Wi-Fi network. The feature is ad-supported, however, so you will have to sit through an advertisement before getting to your video.
Not every video is available
It is worth noting that not every video is available for offline viewing. Much of India's popular YouTube content can be downloaded, but you might come across some videos that are not available to download.
Offline availability
Any video downloaded can only be played offline for up to 48 hours. After this, you will have to find a working Internet connection and re-sync the video with YouTube app for any changes and availability status.

How to download a YouTube video for offline viewing
To make a YouTube video available offline, first you need to open the YouTube app on your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet.

Visit the video file you want to download. Look for the Add to Offline icon below the video (alternatively you can click the context menu button and select Add to Offline option). Do note that if the video isn't available for offline viewing, it will have a crossed Add to Offline button. You cannot download such a video to your device.

Wikipedia might not be the best source for information on Internet as the website is prone to human error but it still serves as a go-to solution for quick and easy information for many of us. It might be hard for us to believe but China's rigorous Internet censorship has ensured that country's users are not able to get access to Wikipedia. However, the Chinese government has now reportedly recruited around 20,000 people to develop its own version of Wikipedia, which is expected to be China-centric and will go online in 2018.

The 'Chinese Encyclopaedia', which has also been described as "The Great Wall of Culture" by an official, will be a knowledge base consisting of more than 300,000 entries (each expected to be about 1000 words long) on around 100 disciplines, as per a report by South China Morning Post. That number of entries is far behind the English language Wikipedia (nearly 5.4 million entries), but roughly the same size as the Chinese language Wikipedia, the report points out. While Chinese companies including Baidu and Qihoo 360 already have their own online encyclopaedias, they are not even close to matching Wikipedia in terms of scale and breadth of information.

The government has recruited scholars from universities and research institutes to contribute to the articles that will be put onto the Chinese Encyclopaedia. As per Yang Muzhi, the editor-in-chief of the project and the chairman of the Book and Periodicals Distribution Association of China, the aim of the Chinese Encyclopaedia is "to showcase China's latest science and technology developments, promote historical heritage, increase cultural soft power, and strengthen the core values of socialism," as per the report.

Interestingly, Yang says that the aim is not to mimic Wikipedia but to go even further. "We have the biggest, most high-quality author team in the world. Our goal is not to catch up, but overtake," he was quoted as saying.

China currently has highest Internet population in the world with around 720 million users but access restrictions on many popular website means that there is demand for content that has not been served. As one might expect, it is not clear how much interference will be there from the government's side on the Chinese Encyclopaedia's content.

Microsoft just unveiled a new operating system at a press event this morning. Windows 10 S is a streamlined and more secure version of Windows 10. But it still looks and feels like a normal PC. And it runs essential apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

While I haven’t used Office apps for years, I spent most of my days using them back when I was in a student. I used Word to write papers, PowerPoint to prepare presentations and Excel to calculate stuff. And this is a great way to convince companies to buy Office subscriptions as most employees are already familiar with Office apps.

Microsoft is fully aware of that and plans to take advantage of that with its Chromebook competitors.

Sure, you can use Word Online, Google Docs and other web apps on your Chromebook. And Google has been saying for years that you’ll soon be able to run Android apps on your Chrome OS device. But very few Chromebooks currently support Android apps, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Android.

Microsoft is restricting Windows 10 S devices to Windows Store apps. It means that you won’t be able to download app from the your browser and install it. Developers will have to submit their apps to the Windows Store first.

But the company instantly reassured everyone by saying that Office apps are coming to the Windows Store soon. So it means that you’ll be able to buy a $189 Windows 10 S laptop and run full-fledged Office apps. And if you’re a student or teacher, Office 365 is free. Update: Office 365 for Education only gives you free access to online versions of Office apps, so you’ll still have to get a license through your school.

Microsoft is probably going to use Office apps in its advertising campaigns for Windows 10 S devices as it’s a sweet deal if you want a cheap device that runs Word. This is going to be Microsoft’s killer feature when it comes to selling those devices and eating up Chromebook’s market share.

Now it’s still going to take years as schools don’t take this kind of decisions lightly. Districts don’t switch to another vendor because Microsoft is slightly ahead of the competition. It’s going to be a long fight, but it looks like Microsoft thinks it’s worth starting it.

Software Engineering / Google Doc scam
« on: May 04, 2017, 08:10:51 AM »
A new Google Docs phishing scam just reared its head a few hours ago, and it’s spreading like wildfire. Google appears to be taking action to stop it, but in the meantime: be super, super wary of Google Doc invites for now. If you fall for this one (and plenty of otherwise eagle-eyed people have already), it’ll blast out the bait to everyone on your contact list. Here’s what you need to know:
Clicking the link takes you to a real Google-hosted page, with a list of your Google accounts ready to click
It asks you to select an account and provide an app called “Google Docs” — yes, they were somehow allowed to name a third-party app “Google Docs” — with account permissions
As soon as you click the “ALLOW” button, this not-at-all-actually-Google Docs app now has permission to read your emails and email all your contacts… the latter of which it’ll start doing pretty much immediately, spreading the worm to pretty much everyone you’ve ever emailed.
This one is super sneaky; pretty much the only way to detect it before falling for it is to click the small “Google Docs” link on the actual Google-hosted page and notice that the developer info seems… off.

Should be careful of using phone during such situation.
