In the aftermath of the deadly Rana Plaza collapse in Savar, mobile operators have received notices to take down nearly 500 mobile towers from different buildings around the country.

Operators, however, have expressed concern over the issue, saying it is impossible to displace such a large number of towers immediately. The country’s mobile communications could be disrupted as well, they said.

Nearly 400 rooftop towers of different mobile operators have been installed in apparel factories located in Dhaka and adjacent areas.

The BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) has asked operators to relocate towers and electric generators following the Rana Plaza collapse.

Different municipal authorities have also issued the same notice to operators, asking them to remove rooftop towers from residences.

Sources say, more than 20,000 towers have been installed around the country, most of which have been placed on roofs.

The authorities are concerned that greater problems could arise in the future if public awareness isn’t created in this regard.
