English / It's easy to feel helpless.
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:03:26 PM »
When a friend is grieving the loss of a loved one, it's obvious to feel helpless. Sometimes we think we're doing the right thing by trying to cheer them up, pointing out the positives or letting them know that they should try to move on.
Well intentioned as we may be, those efforts tend to put pressure on them and leave them feeling invalidated. Here are some ways to help you support your friend in times of need.
Let go of time expectations.
The  grief-stricken person struggles for longer than expected. If this happens, regardless of how frustrating or frightening it may be for you, let them grieve for however long they need, knowing you won't judge them for it.
 Recognize the stages of grief.
The suffering of a loss goes through the  stages like: denial, bargaining, anger, depression and acceptance. Each one is healthy and necessary. The more familiar you are with these stages, the better equipped you'll be to support your friend. :)

English / A story to share

The medicine that Walter Lewis takes for his rheumatoid arthritis causes him to wake up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth. January 15, 2016, was no different. Lewis, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, awoke at 2:30 a.m. needing water. He was walking back upstairs from the kitchen when he heard his American bulldog, Rock.

Whatever Rock was doing down there, it made enough noise for me to go to him. By the time I made it to the bottom of the stairs, he was running up, and he never came up the stairs, no matter what. I think that was his way of telling me, “We’ve got to go back up.”

When I got to the top of the stairs, I turned around and saw a light on, but I didn’t remember leaving one on. I walked downstairs again, and that’s when I saw fire. I immediately shouted to my wife to wake up and get our three kids. I grabbed a knife and cut out the plastic that covered the window to the porch roof. I then pried open the window and kicked out the screen. I got everybody out on the roof and threw a blanket out there so we wouldn’t slip off. It was cold, January cold. Then I started screaming for help. But help never came.

Now, I’m scared of heights and have physical issues, what with my rheumatoid arthritis, but I couldn’t let my family burn up. So I jumped off the roof. I didn’t scoot to the edge; I just jumped and got the wind knocked out of me when I landed.

I found our ladder, placed it against the house, and climbed back up to the roof. I wrapped my arms around my daughter and carried my nine-month-old with my teeth, by his little sleeper. Then I climbed down the ladder. Once on the ground, I had my little girl hold her brother, and I went back up to the roof to get my other daughter. Then I went back up again and got my wife. I tried to get my dog, but he just disappeared in the black smoke. I never saw him alive again.

I’m no hero. I’m just an ordinary person who’d help anybody. This happened to be the time when I helped my own family. I live to protect my family. Just like Rock—he lived to protect us.

The constant happiness is curiosity.”
― Alice Munro

“There is a limit to the amount of misery and disarray you will put up with, for love, just as there is a limit to the amount of mess you can stand around a house. You can't know the limit beforehand, but you will know when you've reached it. I believe this.”

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
While the uses for white vinegar are plentiful, apple cider vinegar has arguably even more applications. Its wide-ranging benefits (rivaling the number of uses for tea tree oil and other nifty natural helpers) include everything from curing hiccups to alleviating cold symptoms, and some people have turned to apple cider vinegar to help with health concerns including diabetes, cancer, heart problems, high cholesterol, and weight issues. Read on for more reasons to keep apple cider vinegar handy in your pantry.

1.For an upset stomach, sip some apple cider vinegar mixed with water. If a bacterial infection is at the root of your diarrhea, apple cider vinegar could help contain the problem, thanks to its antibiotic properties. What's more, some folk remedy experts contend that apple cider vinegar contains pectin, which can help soothe intestinal spasms. Try mixing one or two tablespoons into water, or clear juice like apple juice.

2. Take a teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar; its sour taste could stop a hiccup in its tracks. One teen took the hiccup remedy further and created a lollipop that includes apple cider vinegar, which she says "cancels out the message to hiccup" by over-stimulating the nerve.

3.As soon as you feel the prickle of a sore throat, employ germ-busting apple cider vinegar to help head off the infection at the pass. Turns out, most germs can't survive in the acidic environment vinegar creates. Just mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup warm water and gargle every hour or so.es in the throat responsible for the spasms.

4. More research is needed to definitively link apple cider vinegar and its capability to lower cholesterol in humans, but one 2006 study found that the acetic acid in the vinegar lowered bad cholesterol in rats. Also, a Japanese study found that half an ounce of apple cider vinegar a day lowered cholesterol in people who participated in the panel.

5. Sip before eating, especially if you know you're going to indulge in foods that will make you sorry later. Try this folk remedy: add 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water and drink it 30 minutes before you dine.

6. Next time you're stuffed up from a cold, grab the apple cider vinegar. It contains potassium, which thins mucus; and the acetic acid in it prevents germ growth, which could contribute to nasal congestion. Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink to help sinus drainage.

7.Apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight. Here's why: The acetic acid suppresses your appetite, increases your metabolism, and reduces water retention. Scientists also theorize that apple cider vinegar interferes with the body's digestion of starch, which means fewer calories enter the bloodstream.

8.On his website, Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends apple cider vinegar as a dandruff treatment. The acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH of your scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water in a spray bottle, and spritz on your scalp. Wrap your head in a towel and let sit for 15 minutes to an hour, then wash your hair as usual. Do this twice a week for best results.

9. Exercise and sometimes extreme stress cause lactic acid to build up in the body, causing fatigue. Interestingly, the amino acids contained in apple cider vinegar act as an antidote. What's more, apple cider vinegar contains potassium and enzymes that may relieve that tired feeling. Next time you're beat, add a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar to a glass of chilled vegetable drink or to a glass of water to boost your energy.

10. If proper brushing and mouthwash doesn't do the trick, try the home remedy of using apple cider vinegar to control bad breath.

11. Gargle with it, or drink a teaspoon (diluted with water if you prefer).Gargle with apple cider vinegar in the morning. The vinegar helps remove stains, whiten teeth, and kill bacteria in your mouth and gums. Brush as usual after you gargle. You can also brush your teeth with baking soda once a week to help remove stains and whiten your teeth; use it just as you would toothpaste. You can also use salt as an alternative toothpaste. If your gums start to feel raw, switch to brushing with salt every other day to kill odor-causing bacteria.

Public Health / Just a soft reminder

Sleep loss, junk food, inactivity — these things and more can take a toll on your brain health. Here are some issues to pay attention if you would like to keep your brain healthy.  :)

You miss out on sleep

You do a few things you know you should not — we all do. But some of those bad habits can take a toll on your brain. For example, lack of sleep may be a cause of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. It is best to have regular sleeping hours. If you have trouble with sleep, avoid alcohol, caffeine, and electronics in the evening, and start a soothing bedtime ritual.

You have too much alone time

Humans are wired for social contact. It is not about how many Facebook friends you have — what matters is a real sense of connection. People who have that with even just a few close friends are happier and more productive. They are also less likely to suffer from brain decline and Alzheimer’s. If you feel alone, call some friends or start something new — salsa dancing, tennis, bridge — that involves other people.

You eat too much junk food

Parts of the brain linked to learning, memory, and mental health are smaller in people who have lots of hamburgers, fries, potato chips, and soft drinks in their diet. Berries, whole grains, nuts, and green leafy vegetables, on the other hand, preserve brain function and slow mental decline. So next time you start to reach for a bag of chips, grab a handful of nuts instead.

You blast your headphones

With your earbuds at full volume, you can permanently damage your hearing in only 30 minutes. But it is not just your ears: Hearing loss in older adults is linked to brain problems, such as Alzheimer’s and loss of brain tissue. This may be because your brain has to work so hard to understand what’s being said around you that it cannot store what you have heard into memory. So turn it down — no louder than 60% of your device’s maximum volume — and try not to listen for more than a couple of hours at a time.

You do not move enough

The longer you go without regular exercise, the more likely you are to have dementia. You are also more likely to get diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure — all of which may be linked to Alzheimer’s. You don’t have to start running marathons — a half-hour in the garden or a brisk walk around the neighborhood will work. The important thing is to do it at least 3 days a week.

You still smoke

It can shrink your brain — and that is not a good thing. It makes your memory worse and makes you twice as likely to get dementia, including Alzheimer’s. It also causes heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure.

You overeat

If you eat too much food — even the right kind of food — your brain may not be able to build the strong network of connections that help you think and remember. Overeat for too long and you may get dangerously overweight, which can cause heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure — all linked to brain problems and Alzheimer’s.

You stay in the dark too much

If you do not get enough natural light, you may get depressed, and that can slow your brain. Research also shows that sunlight helps keep your brain working well.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

“If you want to know who your friends really are and whom you should be hanging around with, all you have to do is follow this simple test.  Whenever you’ve just finished spending time with a particular person, ask yourself Do I feel better or worse than I did before?  No long explanations, no equivocations.  No excuses. Just ‘better’ or ‘worse’.  Then tally up the results and pretty soon everything will begin to seem very clear…It helped me surround myself with friends whom I love, and who love me.”

I want to share a poem that touched my heart.

First Week

To hell with the classroom
(False walls and fluorescent lights)
To hell with the rules that cut us off

I took them to Avalon
we closed our eyes
starting with a breath
the wind
the sound of woodpeckers
the sound of our invasion

I took them to Caumsett
Jess held up her totem painting
the turtle
bikinis and red rock
Tom spoke of his journey to
the rainforest in Brazil and
deforestation

we sat in a circle on rocks
spoke of ocean acidification
the dying coral reef
the abundance of red jellyfish

we spoke of earthfirst!
eco-terrorism
putting nature on equal
footing with humans

we spoke of the rape of the land
we spoke of the rape of women
we spoke of capitalism and profit

we listened to Mary Oliver
the despair of Wendell Berry
the blue horses of Luci Topahonso
the birth of the baby of Dine
and chamisa

we spoke of losses
of what nature is and is not
we held paints and pens and
colored pencils
empty books

I noticed each student drew trees

It was a hot hot day
Maurice helped me put on my
shoe I was so tired
tenderly
the kind of love you
can feel when a lotus flower
opens

All of us gasped at the wonder
of the beautiful world of this classroom
of grass and stone
the opportunity of coming together
strangers for the first time
to speak the truth
to learn about climate change
to learn about nuclear radiation
to talk about the language of satire
hybrids and hyenas
monsanto and monocropping
to hold hands as we felt
explosions of shale
explosions of mountaintop
explosions of souls and skin
smashing atoms, as Maurice calls it

Shavon said: it's a wonder
already we feel like family

In these teaching moments
I feel hope
hope for the earth
hope for the children of tomorrow

English / Health benefits of Coconut oil
« on: June 21, 2016, 02:08:12 PM »
I found the information about coconut oil quite interesting. So I want to share it with you.
Coconut oil is so good that everyone should consume in a daily basis. This healthy oil is extracted from the fruit of the coconut palm. It is consisted mostly of lauric acid. Coconut oil has rather firm consistency on a room temperature and has a long shelf life, which makes it a great addition to any diet.
 Better brain function
The MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) in coconut oil provide more energy, aside from glucose that keeps the brain and nervous system in a good working order.

A study published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging has shown that the regular intake of MCTs has led to better brain function. Higher levels of ketones indicate that the body is using fat as the major source of energy, together with glucose, so the brain can function properly. The MCTs in this oil may have health benefits for memory-impaired people.

Lowers cholesterol
Several studies have found that the saturated fats in this superfood are neutral in their effect on your blood cholesterol than in meat products.
The coconut oil is packed with saturated fats that can lower your risk of heart disease and raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels. It also has high amounts of lauric and capric acids that are known to have special health benefits, such as lowering your cholesterol levels.
Coconut oil had a bad reputation for many years, until it has proven that anything that raises your cholesterol levels isn’t bad. Now we know the difference between bad and good cholesterol, we also know that this oil actually increases the level of good cholesterol levels. The cells in your body need the ‘good’ cholesterol and consuming this healthy oil is one of the best ways to do it.
Weight loss
Coconut oil contains the medium-chain triglycerides that can boost your energy, compared to other oils.
But like all edible oils, coconut oil is high in fat (12 grams of saturated fat), and calories (110) per tablespoon, so you should avoid consuming large quantities of coconut oil to maintain your healthy weight.
These medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil digest as fast as sugar in the body. However, most of us know that a calorie is not just a calorie. While burger may contain the same number of fats and calories as coconut oil, how our body uses those calories is what accounts. It is a good idea to use organic oil to get the maximum health benefits and avoid all harmful chemicals.
Moisturizes skin
A recent study has shown that coconut oil is also good for your skin.
It can help in increasing hydration and can prevent water loss from your skin, so many use it as a skin moisturizer because it is rich in Vitamin E and has a strong antioxidant activity.
This can prevent the damage to the tissues, since oxidation causes skin aging. Coconut oil is also great when applied to the skin’s surface. It can lower the amounts of staph aureus, harmful skin germs. The anti-microbial properties of coconut oil can help people with health problems like staph infections and acne; almost all skin-related diseases. The same study has shown that this superfood can raise lipid content for people who have dry skin.
This oil relieves dandruff and heals bruises faster
One of many health benefits is that your bruises will take a much shorter time to heal. To get the most health benefits from it, you should consume it and in the same time rub it onto your bruises.
It really works, and you’ll just have to see for yourself. This oil also contains the natural anti-oxidants, making Ii it the best anti-aging moisturizer, and even more, it can help treat skin abrasions.
Nearly all deodorants that you can buy contain aluminum. This can be a big problem, especially for sensitive areas on our body. You can make your own homemade deodorant that you can prepare in only 5 minutes. And you all probably know that you should use organic coconut oil to make it.
Energy
Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids, meaning that they are digested more quickly. When you consume this oil, you will get energy more quickly if compared to other oils.
People who have had gall bladder removal surgery have to avoid fats, but can eat foods with medium chain fatty acids. The fatty acids can also help the thyroid gland to work properly, keeping your body more energetic.
This increases your energy levels, meaning that and you will be able to move more and have more energy throughout the day. The more active you are, you will burn more calories, resulting in losing pounds. A healthy thyroid gland also has many health benefits for your body and your general health.
Strengthens bones and fights jock itch and athlete’s foot
If you have osteoporosis, then coconut oil is the best choice for you. Several studies have found that it can increase the amount of bone and its structure.
Calcium is not the only component needed for our bones. Besides the recommended calcium intake, you can use coconut oil, because coconut oil has the same benefits. If you have jock itch, put it on the affected area.
You should use it several times daily in order to see the best results, and it would also be great to consume it on a daily basis. This oil gives you a healthy and natural alternative to using prescription drugs, so that you don’t have to ask your doctor's help.

English / TonyMorrison:"The Night I stood My Ground"
« on: June 08, 2016, 01:17:09 PM »
The Nobel Prize winner writes about finding courage and confronting evil.

TWO BLOCKS. Two very, very long blocks beyond in deep darkness. It is 1953, and I have walked these blocks many times on my way to the room I rent off campus. I get off the bus after leaving the library at ten o’clock in the evening clutching books in my arms, with a purse hanging from a strap on my shoulder.
My landlady works the night shift at the hospital, so at this hour, the house will be as dark and blank as the others on this street. Everything is quiet and closed. Far ahead (or so it seems) is a streetlight. I am thinking about a paper due in a few days. What theme should I explore? Will the professor admire or dismiss it? Why are we reading Dreiser anyway?
I notice headlights coming toward me. A car is driving slowly down the street on the other side. As it passes, I glance at the driver—male, blond. I keep walking. The car slows down and stops. I hear its door slam shut. A few seconds later, I hear footsteps behind me. I keep walking; I do not speed up, because I don’t want to call attention to myself. The walker may be going to a house nearby, visiting a friend. Besides, what would be the point of hurrying, running?
I still have to get my door key from my purse. When I reach my house, I will have to walk upstairs to the porch, fumble in the dark to insert my key in the lock. Then he will climb the steps behind me, put his right hand over my mouth, knock me down on the porch floor, scattering my books, the contents of my purse. His breath smells of mint, but there is a sour smell too. There is no one to see. He will hold me down with one hand squeezing my throat, reach under my skirt with the other, and say, “Don’t fight me; don’t fight.”
I am exhausted. The scene I have imagined is detailed, brutal, and unbearable. I cannot live through what I anticipate.
I stop. I refuse to experience that imaginary assault again.
I turn around and wait for him. I wait and wait until he catches up to where I stand, with nothing to defend myself but the urgency to escape not what might happen but what has already happened in my mind.
He comes close, closer. I can see his eyes (or I think I can).
“Will you please leave me alone.” It is neither a question nor a scream. My voice is low, conversational. Nothing can be worse than what I have imagined.
He pauses.
“I’m not going to bother you,” he whispers, then turns around and walks back to his car.
Although this encounter was important to me, it should not be understood as appropriate action for anyone else. Confronting evil can be dangerous, bloody, even fatal. Each of us responds in our own way. But for me, a young student, it sealed the connection between my imagination and the source of courage. I did not run away.

English / The definition of REVENGE
« on: June 08, 2016, 12:47:32 PM »
Revenge:  Something that you do in order to make somebody suffer because they have made you suffer.
The definition sounds simple enough and may even coincide conveniently with the "eye for an eye" theory. However, revenge has by contrast been described as "a boomerang – although for a time it flies in the direction in which it is hurled, it takes a sudden curve and, returning, hits your own head the heaviest blow of all" (John M. Mason).
Revenge has also been depicted as "wild justice" (Francis Bacon) or "like biting a dog because the dog bit you" (Austin O’Malley). Yet there are others who are of contrary opinion: "Revenge is sweet – especially to women" (Lord Byron Don Juan); or such proverbs as "Revenge is a dish best served cold" (which has been interpreted as a persuasion to forestall vengeance until wisdom can reassert itself) and "Don’t get mad, get even" (which embodies the modern Western legal system’s goal to make the criminal "pay his debt to society").
The trouble with pay-back – at least on the personal as opposed to the institutional level – is that it springs from bitterness which like most deep feelings of rancour, enmity and hostility does nothing but promote heartburn in the vessel that harbours it. It is sadly true for those of us intent upon destroying our enemies that they frequently are unaware of our estimable preoccupation and thus the undertaking does little more than secretly diminish ourselves. Furthermore there is the possibility that the harm we imagine to have suffered is not real or may have been unintended. In matters of the heart, as in matters of commerce, there exists the conceivability of misunderstanding such that our surreptitious efforts at retribution are entirely unexpected or unimaginable by the object of our cause. Often we are so driven in our sense of social justice that the proposed punishment in revenge far exceeds the original injury. To this detractors argue that revenge is a logical fallacy of the same design as "two wrongs make a right". As noble as the subject of revenge may have been characterized by Shakespeare (Hamlet) and others, perhaps it was best put by Confucius: "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves".
In the heat of the moment, however, it is more than an inductive leap for most of us to adopt scripture which prescribes: "Do not seek revenge…love your neighbour as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). As compelling as the philosophy may be against the enactment of revenge, more often than not we unabashedly – even audaciously – pine for it. Likely we may even go so far as to pretend we haven’t an appetite for it, but usually it persists. It takes a very special person to rise above it.
Recall the words of Francis Bacon: "The man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green". Herein lies the palatable and pragmatic advantage of avoiding revenge; viz., it spares us our own self-inflicted misery. Some may even assuage themselves to believe that passing it over elevates us above our enemies. In a word, revenge is corrosive. Liberation from the hackles of revenge must come from within. Yet even if one seeks to avoid retribution, it is not clear that we so easily forget notwithstanding that "to be angry is to revenge the faults of others on ourselves".
If nothing else one must weigh the advantages and disadvantages. The actions and behaviour of some people are perhaps intolerable but to indulge ourselves in the weaknesses of others may only prolong what is implacable vengeance.

English / Adaptations of Shakespearean plays
« on: March 03, 2016, 10:59:14 AM »
Cymbeline
An adaptation of one of Shakespeare's lesser-known plays, the action has been moved to modern-day New York and stars Ethan Hawke, Milla Jovovich, Penn Badgley and Ed Harris as Cymbeline. The trailer can be seen here and shows "a grudge war between corrupt cops and a drug-dealing biker gang in modern America". It will hit cinemas later this year.
Macbeth
Recent Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender takes on lead duties while Marion Cotillard, replacing Natalie Portman, will be his devious wife. To make matters even more promising, it's being directed by Justin Kurzel, who wrote and directed the harrowing crime thriller Snowtown. It's also been picked up by the Weinsteins which means it's likely to get a hefty push for Oscars.
Enemy Of Man
Yet another Macbeth adaptation here but taking a slightly less traditional view of the material. According to the sourse this one will be "stripping back the dialogue and cranking up the action" which should prove interesting. It stars Sean Bean, Rupert Grint, James D'Arcy and Charles Dance and looks like it will take place largely on the battlefield. It'll be directed by actor Vincent Regan, who has starred in 300 and Snow White and the Huntsman.
Rosaline
After the slightly underwhelming performance of the last incarnation of Romeo & Juliet, starring Hailee Stanfield, this alternate take hopes to do a whole load better. It's set to star Alison Williams, that's Marnie in Girls, as the titular character, better known as Romeo's jilted love and the cousin of Juliet. We then see the classic tragedy through her eyes. It'll be a comedic take and despite being set in the correct time, it'll use modern language. Dave Franco and Lily Collins are  to take  the roles of the doomed lovers.

English / 10 phrases coined by Shakespeare
« on: March 03, 2016, 10:42:20 AM »
There aren't many writers who can add the skill "coining a phrase" to their résumé. But Shakespeare is an exceptional as he belongs to a special, gold-encrusted league of his own.
Check out 10 sayings that this great man created all by himself and then bow down!
1.' Discretion is the better part of valour'
A version of the words uttered by Falstaff in Henry IV, Part I.
2.' All that glisters (glitters) is not gold'
We can thank the Prince of Morocco in The Merchant Of Venice for this, though the original word used was ‘glisters’.
3. 'The beast with two backs'
Iago gives us this saucy phrase as he gets irritated by inter-racial love in Othello.
4. 'It was Greek to me'
Roman Casca indulges in some petty nationalism in Julius Caesar.
5.' Eaten out of house and home'
A gluttonous accusation from Mistress Quickly in Henry IV Part II.
6.' I have not slept one wink'
Pisanio produces this in one of Shakespeare’s less-blockbuster plays, Cymbeline.
7. Send him packing
Falstaff’s second appearance in our list.
8. Short shrift
Ratcliffe gives us this in Richard III. It didn’t appear in print again until Walter Scott’s Lord Of The Isles in 1815.
9. Seen better days
This phrase came from Flavius in Timon Of Athens.
10. The worm will turn
Clifford gives hope to the small folk in Henry VI, Part III.
