বিশ্বব্যাপী ছড়িয়ে পড়া করোনা ভাইরাস মানুষের শরীরের বাইরে ৯টি জিনিসের ওপর বেশি দিন বাঁচে বলে জানিয়েছে বিজ্ঞানীরা। কোনো রোগী সেইসব বস্তুর সংস্পর্শে এলে কতদিন পর্যন্ত সেইসব বস্তু থেকে সাবধানতা অবলম্বন করা উচিত তা নিচে দেয়া হল...

১. প্লাস্টিক: করোনাভাইরাস সবচেয়ে বেশি দিন বাঁচতে পারে পলিপ্রোপিলিন নামক এক ধরনের প্লাস্টিকের উপর। পাঁচদিন পর্যন্ত এর উপর বেঁচে থাকতে পারে করোনাভাইরাস। এই ধরনের প্লাস্টিক দিয়েই শিশুর খেলনা থেকে শুরু করে প্লাস্টিকের টিফিন বক্স তৈরি করা হয়।

২. কাগজ: কাগজের উপর করোনাভাইরাস বেশিক্ষণ বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। তবে গবেষকরা জানিয়েছেন, খবরের কাগজ থেকে কোনোভাবেই এই ভাইরাস ছড়াতে পারে না। খবরের কাগজের মাধ্যমে এই সংক্রমণ ছড়ানোর কোনো আশঙ্কাই নেই। সংবাদপত্রের প্রক্রিয়াকরণের সময়ে যেসব রাসায়নিক ব্যবহার করা হয়, তার উপরে ড্রপলেটের বেঁচে থাকা অসম্ভব। তবে গবেষকেরা জানিয়েছেন, খবরের কাগজ ছাড়া অন্যান্য কাগজের উপর ৪-৫ দিন বেঁচে থাকতে পারে করোনাভাইরাস।

৩. কাঁচ: কাঁচ এবং তা দিয়ে বানানো জিনিসের উপর করোনা ভাইরাস বেশি দিন বাঁচতে পারে। গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে, কাচ জাতীয় কোনো পৃষ্ঠদেশের উপর অন্তত চারদিন পর্যন্ত বেঁচে থাকতে পারে করোনাভাইরাস।

৪. কাঠ: কাঠের বস্তুর উপর এই ভাইরাস চারদিন পর্যন্ত বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। তাই গবেষকেরা জানাচ্ছেন, কাঠের কোনো বস্তুতে হাত দিলে, তারপরই যেন কোনোভাবেই হাত মুখে বা নাকে না যায় এবং ভালো করে ২০ সেকেন্ড ধরে সাবান দিয়ে হাত ধুয়ে ফেলা জরুরি।

৫. স্টেইনলেস স্টিল: স্টেইনলেস স্টিলের উপর করোনাভাইরাস বেশিক্ষণ বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে, স্টেইনলেস স্টিলের উপর এই ভাইরাস ৪৮ ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত সক্রিয় থাকে।কোনো আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির হাঁচি-কাশির মাধ্যমে যদি করোনাভাইরাসের জীবাণু কোনো স্টিলের উপরে পড়ে, তাহলে ৪৮ ঘণ্টা পরও তা থেকে ভাইরাস ছড়াতে পারে।

৬. সার্জিক্যাল গ্লাভস: প্রধানত চিকিৎসকেরা সার্জিক্যাল গ্লাভস ব্যবহার করে থাকেন। আর হাসপাতালে এখন সমস্ত করোনাভাইরাস আক্রান্ত রোগীদের ভিড়। পাশাপাশি অন্যান্য রোগীরাও সেখানেই রয়েছেন। রয়েছেন তাদের বাড়ির লোকজনও। তাই সার্জিক্যাল গ্লাভস ব্যবহারে ভীষণভাবে সুরক্ষা-বিধি মেনে চলা প্রয়োজন। কারণ সার্জিক্যাল গ্লাভসের উপর এই ভাইরাস অন্তত চার ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। সুরক্ষা-বিধি মেনে না চললে, সেখান ছড়ানোর সম্ভাবনাও খুব বেশি।

৭. অ্যালুমিনিয়াম: যেসব ধাতব বস্তু নিয়ে গবেষণা চালানো হয়েছে তার মধ্যে আর একটি হল অ্যালুমিনিয়াম। গবেষকরা জানাচ্ছেন, অ্যালুমিনিয়ামের উপর এই ভাইরাস দু’ঘণ্টা থেকে চার ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। তবে ‘ন্যাকেড’ বা নগ্ন ভাইরাস কোনো বস্তুর উপরেই বাঁচতে পারে না। এদের টিকে থাকার জন্য হাঁচি বা কাশির ড্রপলেট তথা তরল বিন্দুর প্রয়োজন হয়। অ্যালুমিনিয়াম জাতীয় পদার্থের উপর যদি এই ড্রপলেট পড়ে, তবেই তা সংক্রমণযোগ্য।

৮. তামা: সম্প্রতি নিউ ইংল্যান্ড জার্নাল অব মেডিসিন একটি রিপোর্ট প্রকাশ করেছে। তাতে তামার উপর এবং বাতাসে এই ভাইরাস কতদিন বাঁচতে পারে, তা প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে। সেই রিপোর্ট অনুযায়ী, তামার উপর চার ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত বেঁচে থাকতে পারে এই করোনাভাইরাস।

৯. বাতাস: বাতাসে মাত্র তিন ঘণ্টা পর্যন্ত বেঁচে থাকতে পারে করোনাভাইরাস।

বেশিরভাগ বাচ্চারা ইতিমধ্যে ভাইরাস সম্পর্কে শুনেছেন বা লোকদের মুখোশ পরা লোক দেখেছেন, তাই পিতামাতাকে এ বিষয়ে কথা বলা এড়ানো উচিত নয়। কোনও কিছুর কথা না বলাই বাচ্চাদের আরও বেশি চিন্তিত করতে পারে। চাইল্ড মাইন্ড ইনস্টিটিউটের শিশু মনোবিজ্ঞানী জ্যানাইন ডোমিংগস ব্যাখ্যা করেছেন, "আপনি সংবাদটি গ্রহণ করুন এবং আপনিই সেই ব্যক্তি যিনি আপনার বাচ্চার কাছে সংবাদটি উপস্থাপন করেন।" আপনার লক্ষ্যটি বাচ্চাদের অবহিত করা এবং সত্য ভিত্তিক তথ্য পেতে সহায়তা করা যা তারা তাদের বন্ধুদের কাছ থেকে বা সংবাদে যা শুনছেন তার চেয়ে বেশি আশ্বাসযুক্ত।

Compared with the intricacies of voice recognition, gesture recognition is a fairly simple idea that is only now making its way into consumer electronics. The idea is to employ a camera (such as a laptop's Webcam) to watch the user and react to the person's hand signals. Holding your palm out flat would indicate "stop," for example, if you're playing a movie or a song. And waving a fist around in the air could double as a pointing system: You would just move your fist to the right to move the pointer right, and so on.

Gesture recognition systems are creeping onto the market now. Toshiba, a pioneer in this market, has at least one product out that supports an early version of the technology: the Qosmio G55 laptop, which can recognize gestures to control multimedia playback. The company is also experimenting with a TV version of the technology, which would watch for hand signals via a small camera atop the set. Based on my tests, though, the accuracy of these systems still needs a lot of work.

Gesture recognition is a neat way to pause the DVD on your laptop, but it probably remains a way off from being sophisticated enough for broad adoption. All the same, its successful development would excite tons of interest from the "can't find the remote" crowd. Expect to see gesture recognition technology make some great strides over the next few years, with inroads into mainstream markets by 2012.

 Google Checkout provides an alternative to PayPal. Street View is well on its way to taking a picture of every house on every street in the United States. And the fun is just starting: Google's early-beta Chrome browser earned a 1 percent market share in the first 24 hours of its existence. Android, Google's cell phone operating system, is hitting handsets as you read this, becoming the first credible challenger to the iPhone among sophisticated customers.
Though Google seems to have covered everything, many observers believe that logically it will next attempt to attack one very big part of the software market: the operating system.

The Chrome browser is the first toe Google has dipped into these waters. While a browser is how users interact with most of Google's products, making the underlying operating system somewhat irrelevant, Chrome nevertheless needs an OS to operate.
To make Microsoft irrelevant, though, Google would have to work its way through a minefield of device drivers, and even then the result wouldn't be a good solution for people who have specialized application needs, particularly most business users. But a simple Google OS--perhaps one that's basically a customized Linux distribution--combined with cheap hardware could be something that changes the PC landscape in ways that smaller players who have toyed with open-source OSs so far haven't been quite able to do.

If your CPU has only a single core, it's officially a dinosaur. In fact, quad-core computing is now commonplace; you can even get laptop computers with four cores today. But we're really just at the beginning of the core wars: Leadership in the CPU market will soon be decided by who has the most cores, not who has the fastest clock speed.
With the gigahertz race largely abandoned, both AMD and Intel are trying to pack more cores onto a die in order to continue to improve processing power and aid with multitasking operations. Miniaturizing chips further will be key to fitting these cores and other components into a limited space. Intel will roll out 32-nanometer processors (down from today's 45nm chips) in 2009.
Intel has been very good about sticking to its road map. A six-core CPU based on the Itanium design should be out imminently, when Intel then shifts focus to a brand-new architecture called Nehalem, to be marketed as Core i7. Core i7 will feature up to eight cores, with eight-core systems available in 2009 or 2010. (And an eight-core AMD project called Montreal is reportedly on tap for 2009.)

After that, the timeline gets fuzzy. Intel reportedly canceled a 32-core project called Keifer, slated for 2010, possibly because of its complexity (the company won't confirm this, though). That many cores requires a new way of dealing with memory; apparently you can't have 32 brains pulling out of one central pool of RAM. But we still expect cores to proliferate when the kinks are ironed out: 16 cores by 2011 or 2012 is plausible (when transistors are predicted to drop again in size to 22nm), with 32 cores by 2013 or 2014 easily within reach. Intel says "hundreds" of cores may come even farther down the line.

Google is close to realizing a practical quantum computer for the first time after making a major discovery with the revolutionary form of computing.

Hartmut Neven, director of Google’s Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab, revealed to Quanta magazine that his lab’s most advanced quantum processor was improving at a rate far beyond what they had previously thought possible.

The revelation means the tech giant may be just months away from achieving what is known as quantum supremacy, whereby quantum computers are able to solve problems that classical computers practically cannot.

Quantum computers work by replacing traditional bits – the ‘ones’ and ‘zeros’ used in digital communications – with quantum bits, or qubits.

The quantum properties of qubits mean they exist in a state of superposition, meaning the act as both zeros and ones at the same time.
This unusual phenomenon allows quantum computers to be vastly more powerful than traditional computers and means they could potentially solve computing challenges far beyond the reach of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.
It was previously thought that quantum computers were able to make calculations exponentially faster than traditional computers, whereby every qubit added improves the machine’s processing power at an exponential rate.

Ultra-powerful quantum computers hold the potential to transform everything from manufacturing to medical research, but until now they have not found any commercial uses. This could be about to change, after transport giants Daimler and Delta partnered with IBM to develop real-world applications for the nascent technology.

For the Mercedes manufacturer, it could result in electric vehicle batteries capable of traveling more than 1,000km without needing to recharge.

For the world’s most valuable airline, it could mean vastly improved route scheduling, with Delta CIO Rahul Samant saying the partnership with IBM would allow the airline to “draw the blueprints” for quantum computers within the industry.

Quantum computers promise to make such advancements possible by combining the peculiar properties of quantum physics with computer science to achieve processing power that is exponentially more powerful than traditional computers.
