Health Tips /
« on: July 12, 2017, 03:39:31 PM »

Guidance for Job Market / Presenting Yourself Well at a Job Interview
« on: June 03, 2017, 02:01:36 AM »
Presenting Yourself Well at a Job Interview

Presentation at the Interview
First Impressions Count: It is here that all of your advance preparation will pay off. Your appearance, handshake, eye contact, confidence and ability to both answer and ask questions will set the tone for a successful interview.

Arrive early, but not too early. Look over company publications while waiting. Use the restroom facilities to check on your appearance.

When you meet your interviewer, stand, smile and greet him or her with a firm handshake. It is at this moment that your evaluation has begun. An air of self-confidence will help convince the interviewer that you can handle the stress of this first meeting. Be observant, and try to establish a good rapport.

Listen Carefully and Be Responsive: Listen more than you talk during the interview. Get as much information as possible about the interviewer's needs and desires before asking or answering questions. The interviewer should be selling you on the opportunity. The old adage that we have one mouth and two ears, so therefore we should listen twice as much as we speak, is a good one to apply here!

When asked a question you don't understand, seek clarification and respond accordingly. The skills in your "personal inventory"—the responses that you prepared prior to the interview—will help you to answer with confidence and sincerity.

Remember, your interview may be short, so you must get your point across quickly and concisely. Be both factual and sincere when stressing your achievements. While each interview situation is different, there are some questions that you are almost certain to be asked. Your potential employer may want to know more about your education and previous work history, why you are considering a change, how you'd carry out the duties of the position or how willing you'd be to relocate.

Sometimes, broad questions may be asked. Focus your answers on specifics. It will make your responses much more meaningful and the interview more successful. For example:

Q: What can you do for this company?
A: Ask about the company’s plans over the next six months, its most pressing issues, what would it like you to accomplish, etc. Then share similar experiences in your background that relate directly to the company’s needs.

Q: Tell me about your background.
A: Relate your professional experience and employment history, most recent first. Concentrate on accomplishments rather than areas of responsibility.

Be Positive and Professional: Interviewers are likely to ask pointed or potentially negative questions, such as why you left your prior companies. Answer honestly, but try to respond positively. For example, if asked why you had changed jobs three times in five years, you might explain that each position offered a higher degree of challenge and fulfillment, and cite the accomplishments in each of the positions.

Do not be critical of your current or previous employers. To do so suggests disloyalty and unprofessionalism. Your entire demeanor throughout the interview should be positive and professional. It is possible to be assertive, yet remain tactful.

Body language and eye contact are important, but don't overdo it. Sell yourself by concentrating on what you can do for the interviewer, not what the potential employer can do for you. Benefits of employment with the firm will become apparent. If you are successful in this position, the rewards will come.

Treat each interview as though it were the only one. You will undoubtedly meet several different company representatives during the interview process. All are of equal importance to you in the interview process. Do not stop asking questions just because they have been answered previously. Asking questions of all parties involved

• shows your interest in the company and the position to each and every interviewer
• gives you the opportunity to sell yourself to each interviewer
• allows you to get different perspectives from different current employees

Closing the Interview: Before the conclusion of the interview, express your understanding of the position. Enthusiastically indicate your interest in the position and ask what the next step is. If you are uncertain about the opportunity, you may want to pursue an additional interview to adequately form an opinion about the company and your prospects with it. Close the interview just as it began…with a smile and a handshake. Thank the interviewers for their time and consideration.

The Final Word: How FPC Can Help
Immediately following the interview, you must call your FPC recruiter. It is important that your recruiter has your reaction in order to effectively represent you wishes when speaking with the hiring manager. This is your opportunity to discuss both positive items and concerns.

At this time, the recruiter may suggest a phone call or short note to the company restating your attributes and expressing your interest.
If you anticipate an offer, your FPC recruiter will help you carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages. In fact, your recruiter will be of help throughout the process to secure a position and compensation package that's right for you.

Guidance for Job Market / Typical Interview Question
« on: June 03, 2017, 01:52:05 AM »
Typical Interview Question

Great news! They love your resume and want to bring you in for an interview.    So all you have to do now is show up on time wearing your most impressive outfit, right?  Wrong!  You’ve skipped a vital step in securing your next job, preparing for the interview.  There are multiple steps you must take to wow an interviewer.  This article covers preparing your responses for possible questions the interviewer may ask.  See the article entitled "Interview Strategies, Preparation Before the Interview" for information on researching the company, preparing questions for them, and dressing appropriately for the interview.

The first thing to consider is why you want the job and what things in your background and experience qualify you for this position and what impact you feel you could have on the company.  All of the questions the company may ask will touch on that basic concept.  With this in mind, here are some sample questions and possible ways to develop your answers.

Tell me about yourself.
This is open-ended question is designed to learn how you think and give your pitch for why you are qualified for this job.  This is your opportunity to talk about yourself in a broad sense and why you would be a good fit for the company and position.  They are NOT looking to hear about what you do for fun or hearing about your family. In fact, it’s not appropriate for you to discuss personal things that aren’t related to the job.

What inspires you to work hard?
Focus on work-satisfaction related answers rather than rewards.

Walk me through Your Resume.
When an interviewer asks you this question, they want you review only those things in your background that are relevant to your qualifications for this position. It would be a mistake, for example, to start out with discussing why you chose your first job out of college if it is not directly related to why they should hire you for this position.

Why do you want to leave your current job? (Why did you leave your last job?)
It’s important to be honest, while remaining positive.  Although it can be challenging in some cases not to bash your last employer (after all, if things were great, you wouldn’t have left,) it’s important to focus on the nature of your job change as career-growth rather than an escape from a horrid boss.  Its okay to discuss challenges you are seeking that may have been previously lacking, but stay away from personal attacks.

Why did you choose your career?
An employer wants to know that you have a plan and that you make thoughtful decisions. If you did happen to just fall into this career, discuss how you made conscious choices to develop yourself in this career once in it.

What past accomplishments gave you satisfaction?
For this question, it’s important to focus on work-related goal-achievement, rather than monetary or personal accomplishments.  Use examples from your past that show things you’ve done which made your department look good or had an impact on the company and received Kudos.

What are your strengths?
Share with the interviewer attributes about yourself that make you a strong candidate for the position, again, focusing only on the professional rather than personal.  Share examples of how these strengths were an asset to your previous employers.

What are your weaknesses?
It’s important not to sound canned and say that you “work too hard.”  Rather, share one example of a weakness and how you’ve learned from it and are working on overcoming the challenge.

Which adjectives would you use to describe yourself?
Use adjectives that describe work-related behavior, such as honest, goal-oriented, focused, or hard-working. Give brief examples of why these are the adjectives that you chose to describe yourself.

How would a colleague describe you?
Similar to the adjectives you chose to describe yourself, an employer wants to here positive work-related attributes.  It would make the most sense if the description you chose to describe yourself is related to the one that others would use to describe you, otherwise they may get the impression that you are difficult to read and have more communication skills.

What do you know about our company?
If you’ve read the article “Interview Strategies, Preparation Before the Interview,” then you know how important it is to research the company previous to the interview.  Share with them what you have learned about the company, highlighting anything relevant to that division or department.  Good things to know are the organization's products or services, all of their locations, who they count among their clients, the company philosophy & goals and the company growth.

Why do you want to work for us?
If you’ve done your research, then you know what it is about the company that attracts you.  It must be more than what the company can do for you – focus on how you can contribute to their goals.

Why should I hire you?
Here you can bring in examples from your past showing the contributions you’ve made to previous employers and how you feel you could impact the company.  Focus on goals you’ve achieved and how they would benefit.

What are your qualifications for this position?
This is the time to discuss past experiences, education, and skills that have prepared you to take on the challenges of this job.  Remember to stick to specific work-related examples.

What type of work environment do you like best?
It would be counter-productive to describe an environment that is the complete opposite of this job, but you don’t want to answer by simply describing this job’s environment.  The bottom line is, you wouldn’t be applying for this position if the environment was not attractive to you, so use examples from your past that show how you excelled in an environment with some similar characteristics to this one.

Why do you want this job?
Focus on why this job would be a good fit for both sides.  Based on what you know about the job description and the company, discuss how you think you would excel in the position.

How do you handle pressure and stress?
Keep your responses work-related.  How you unwind at home after a stressful day is inappropriate to discuss.  Instead, talk about things you do to remove stress from your work-life, like coming in early on a day that is predictably going to be crazy to avoid the crunch, or preparation ahead of time to reduce stressful situations.  Highlighting your strong communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure as a way to combat stressful situations is also an excellent response.

Give an example of how you overcame a major obstacle.
Here you can highlight your problem-solving skills.  Give an example or two of something work-related that challenged you for which you successfully found a solution.  Stay away from personal challenges such as recovering from a divorce or illness.

Where do you see yourself five (ten or fifteen) years from now?
Employers like goal-oriented people so it’s important to show that you have a plan.  However, it is equally important that this job and company fit into that plan and that you show them how your plan will benefit them.

How do you characterize success?
Stick to goal-achievement examples and stay away from monetary or reward responses here.

If you were hiring for this position, what qualities would you look for?
Though tempting, try not to overtly describe yourself.  Even though you want them to see that all the qualities you posses are what they need, it’s best to bring up specific qualities that you know that they would benefit from based on the job description.  It’s okay to ask some questions along with answering the question to get a better understanding of the position details.

While you don’t want to describe yourself exactly, you definitely don’t want to bring up any qualities that you don’t possess either.  It’s a fine line which, if walked deliberately and with care, will show the interviewer that you care not only about getting the job for yourself, but that you care about what is best for the company as well.

Describe your ideal job.
You can use various examples from your job history that would make up your ideal job.  It has to be real, so make sure you use examples from your past jobs that have similar characteristics to this job and why that attracts you.

What are your salary expectations?
It’s typically not appropriate for you to bring up salary in an interview, but if you are asked, you must have an answer prepared.  Giving a specific number may hurt you so it’s best to give your last salary and say that you would like to have a reasonable increase.

Along with these questions, you will likely be asked industry-specific questions relating to your knowledge of a specific software or process.  If you’ve been in the industry a while, these should be much more straight forward to answer, but just remember that all responses should highlight specific work-related examples showing how they will benefit from you.

How FPC Can Help
FPC recruiters work with their candidates to make sure they have access to and understand the details of the position and can bring out relevant examples from their past experience that would highlight why this company would benefit from hiring them.

Perfecting Your Two-minute Personal Sales Presentation

Whether it’s an interview, a career-networking event or a chance encounter with someone who has the potential to be a business mentor or employer, your two-minute Personal Sales Presentation (PSP) can make the difference between getting to the next step—or not.

In the above situations, you are faced with having to promote yourself—your strengths, your skills—quickly, efficiently and effectively. Because opportunities can knock on our doors both in expected and unexpected ways, it pays to have in mind a prepared response to such questions as "What do you do?" or "Tell me about yourself."

Now is a good time to formulate and review your PSP to make sure it is conveying your strengths in the best possible way. If you already have one, are you certain it is working for you? Does your PSP take into account any new skills you have acquired in the past year?

You may think that two minutes is not enough time to relate your qualifications and skills, but in today’s society, where we are used to 15-second sound bites from the TV news, two minutes is a long time. Here’s how to make each word count.

Illustrate What You Can Do for the Company
"The only way on earth to influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it."—Dale Carnegie

If you’ve ever stumbled over or are not sure how to answer an open-ended question like "Tell me about yourself," keep in mind what the person is not asking:

Your life story, neither professionally nor personally
Any personal details not relevant to the opportunity on hand
What the person really wants to know is, What can you bring to the company? What benefits would someone get from working with you?

Put yourself in your audience’s shoes. Focus on that person’s wants and needs. Then reply by revealing something about your achievements and how they relate to the opportunity in question. Have ready three to five things you have accomplished that prove you can help your listener solve certain concrete problems.

Reciting a list of your attributes ("I’m a team player, organized, hard working") is a waste of your two minutes. Make your attributes come alive by providing specific and relevant examples. Consider the following hypothetical PSPs. If you were a hiring manager, which is more likely to get your attention?

PSP #1: I’m a seasoned quality manager with more than five years’ experience handling a large volume of quality issues.
PSP #2: As a quality manager for more than five years, I analyze over a dozen quality issues daily and determine possible solutions. I also interact with the engineering team to resolve customer issues, work closely with operations to ensure standards are met, and partner with the sales team in closing new customer business.
While PSP #1 is general and doesn’t offer much of value, PSP #2 shows that

you have analytical abilities and are a problem solver;
you are a team player;
you have done something tangible to boost your company’s bottom line.

In PSP #2, you have clearly stated your contributions and demonstrated your competency. Note how much more effective it is to show how you put your attributes to work rather than just listing them.

Here is an example of another hypothetical PSP.
Interviewer: So Mary, what do you do?

PSP 1: I currently support manufacturing as a senior buyer. I became certified as a Six Sigma Greenbelt last year.
PSP 2: As a senior buyer and commodity team leader, I am responsible for all phases of procurement including managing, negotiating contracts, pricing and terms for materials and services totaling $65M/year. As a certified as a Six Sigma Greenbelt, I renegotiated contracts worth over $15M in cost savings.
Many job hunters think, "My skills are listed on my resume, so I don’t need to specify them in an interview." Or someone should just "get it" from your resume how qualified you are. But people who make hiring decisions are often very busy, see many job candidates and may not have had the chance to review your resume thoroughly. Don’t make someone dig for your skills—tell them. If you have a knack for writing technical manuals, say exactly that in your PSP: "I have a knack for writing technical manuals" and back it up. If you have done something outstanding, include that in your PSP.

It is important to note that the above hypothetical examples would serve as just part of your PSP. You have two minutes to fill, which gives you time to tout other relevant achievements and to answer any questions your listener might have. Listening is also part of your PSP—getting the other person’s feedback and reinforcing your skills.

Just as you would with a cover letter and resume, it is helpful to have different PSPs for different positions and industries. One PSP does not usually fit all. List up to five achievements for each position/industry and five selling points. Regardless of how many PSPs you have in your arsenal, always emphasize any accomplishments that show you have reduced costs, increased profits and saved time.

Remember that your focus should always be on the benefits you can bring to a company, and not the other way around.

Make Your PSP Dance
Practice your PSP until it sounds natural—neither too wooden nor too loose. Seek those you trust to provide an honest assessment. Don’t get so caught up in what you’re saying that you discount how you’re saying it. If you want the opportunity, show it. Make your PSP dance by infusing it with enthusiasm. Speaking in a monotone does not benefit anyone, least of all your listener.

Remember too that you are engaging in a two-way conversation. Give the other party a chance to speak. Keep your statements short and focused. Draw your listener in. If, for example, you have communicated how you’ve cut costs, ask your listener what is the biggest expenditure he or she faces. Then reinforce how you can help reduce that cost.

End Your PSP with a Question
If you are presenting your PSP during an interview, the final step is to ask a question designed to get feedback or a follow-up meeting. Ask for a business card. If no card is available, be sure you have the correct spelling of the person’s first and last name and the name of the company. Get a number if possible. And follow-up either with a letter or a phone call.

The Final Word: How FPC Can Help
It can often be difficult to look outside of ourselves and "sell" ourselves to potential employers. We might not even know what our major accomplishments are. When you work with an FPC recruiter, they can help by assessing your skills and strengths and drawing out instances where your attributes have translated into real-life contributions in the workplace. Your FPC recruiter can also work with you to tailor your PSP to specific industries/jobs and provide an impartial, honest assessment of what’s working, and just as important, what’s not.

Guidance for Job Market / Negotiating Successfully

Negotiating Successfully

We often hear that “almost anything is negotiable.” And indeed, from how much we’re willing to pay for a house, to what time to schedule a meeting, it seems that there’s a way to negotiate just about anything in life. However, sealing the deal on a new job offer that satisfies both the job candidate and the company offering the position requires a specific set of bargaining skills.

There are only four possible results of negotiation: 1) win/win; 2) lose/lose; 3) win/lose; 4) neutral (neither party wins or loses). Win/win means both parties come out with their goals and needs fulfilled. And that’s an important point about negotiating: it is not meant to be a contentious battle. “Negotiating is not about one side taking it all,” says Ron Herzog, president of Fortune Personnel Consultants (FPC). “It should definitely be a balance between the two parties, where both parties are ready to buy. The candidate has to say, ‘I want that job,’ and the company has to think, ‘Hey, we want that person.’ And that’s when negotiations can begin.”

Putting C.L.A.M.P.S. on Your Priorities
To reach win/win, you must negotiate from a position of strength. This means that before you even step into the negotiating room, there are some steps to take that will increase your shot at getting what you want. For example, make sure you have done enough research on the company, the salary ranges for the position you’re interested in and the job market so that you go to the bargaining table well prepared. Also, make certain that any issues that may have come up during the interview process are resolved. This includes anything from confusion over specific job functions, to designating title or reporting structure.

Determining your priorities beforehand is also key. A common observation made among hiring managers is that many jobseekers go into negotiation not knowing what they want, so they keep changing their minds during negotiations. Besides coming across as unprepared to your counterpart, you also run the chance of taking a job only to find out it is not at all what you want. You then have to start all over again. So ask yourself, what is most important to you and what matters less? What are you willing to negotiate, and what must you have? A helpful way to reach the answers to those questions is to employ the system Herzog uses: C.L.A.M.P.S., with each letter standing for a certain priority:

C:    Challenge
L:     Location
A:    Advancement
M:   Money
P:   Prestige
S:   Security

“I ask job candidates to rate their priorities in C.L.A.M.P.S. from 1-6,” explains Herzog. “In many instances, if an offer comes in to one of our job candidates and he thinks it’s too low, we’ll go back to his C.L.A.M.P.S. and realize that money was not even on the top of the list, and the job does offer four of the candidate’s top C.L.A.M.P.S.”

And herein is the true value of C.L.A.M.P.S.: it opens up the bigger picture to candidates by asking them to consider issues that might not be obvious, but can be equally important. While salary and benefits are two of the first things in many jobseekers’ minds, these are rarely the only issues. By assessing the whole package and taking the time to rate your priorities, you can uncover matters heretofore unknown to you and gain an understanding of where you may be flexible, and where you may not.

Going into negotiations with a basket of needs as opposed to just one or two may also be advantageous: if one doesn’t work out, you can negotiate with another. As Herzog points out, “There are a lot of things that can be negotiated: sign-on bonuses, moving up the time for your review, performance incentives and, if you’re moving, relocation bonuses and moving costs. At FPC, for example, we sit down with our candidates to evaluate the total package instead of, say, a straight salary issue, and we identify areas where flexibility may exist.”

Common Negotiating Blunders
Of course, successful negotiations also entail knowing what to do during discussions. Here are some steps to avoid once negotiations begin:

Bringing up such issues as salary, compensation or benefits:
“These issues should not be discussed during the interview unless the hiring manager brings it up,” cautions Herzog. Concentrate on selling yourself to the company first.   In a way, your “sell” is a negotiating tactic of sorts as it will plant the seed for how much a company is willing to have you on its team.

Stating your desired salary:
When asked about salary, approach it with openness. Avoid giving a figure or a range if at all possible. You can price yourself above or below what the company had in mind without knowing it—or even price yourself out altogether. FPC recruiters recommend that candidates put in “open” or “negotiable” when asked about desired salary on an application form. Says Herzog, ‘If you put in a range between 70K-90K, guess what—the company is going to give you 70K.’”

But how to answer the question during an interview? “Say something to the effect of ‘I am looking for a reasonable salary increase, and more important, I am looking for an excellent opportunity,’” Herzog proposes. And be sure you make it clear that you want both—or an excellent opportunity may be all that you’ll get.

Understating your current salary:
Whether it’s on the application form or during the actual interview, many candidates forget to look at the whole picture when asked how much they’re currently earning. Some people put in their salary but don’t include other compensation. “You may be making 70K base, but you get a $5,000 bonus or 10K in additional compensation,” says Herzog. “Include all forms of compensation as part of the earnings figure.”

Inflating your current salary:
In a word, don’t. Odds are good that this information will be verified.

All talking, no listening:
An often overlooked and powerful tool to successful negotiating is listening to your counterpart. To unmask someone’s goals and needs, it is vital to pay attention to what that person is saying. Inevitably, you will notice the words your counterpart emphasizes and her verbal intonation, which will cue you in to what she’s really looking for. “We can’t stress enough to our candidates the importance of listening,” Herzog emphasizes. “I’m always asked, ‘What do the best or most effective negotiators have in common?’ More than anything, it’s the ability to truly listen.”

Keep in mind that you can eliminate the possibility of committing any slip-ups by working with a high-quality executive recruiting firm, where the recruiters are well-versed on the steps to take—and not—during negotiations.

An Invaluable Ally
One jobseeker dislikes negotiating because “I’m just not comfortable with it.” Another “never knows when I’m putting my foot in my mouth and saying the wrong things.” Whatever the reason, many people feel uncomfortable negotiating on their own. This is when candidates should turn to a powerful tool: an executive recruiter.

As the intermediary between the company and the candidate, a recruiter helps to serve as a buffer between both parties. FPC recruiters, for example, help to deflect sensitive issues and work with both sides to reach an amenable agreement. The recruiter understands the job responsibilities for a position and is looking to match the right job candidate to the right job responsibilities, so both sides benefit. That’s why working with a recruiter is often a win-win process for all.

How FPC Can Help
There’s no need to go at it alone. When you work with an FPC recruiter, you will have a partner every step of the way. We know you have needs and wants—the key is knowing when and how to express them without turning off a potential employer. At FPC, we are negotiating specialists. We know how to resolve sensitive issues. We can remove the barriers when it comes to discussing issues that you may feel uncomfortable bringing up on your own. We will also brainstorm with you to realize your C.L.A.M.P.S., so you go into negotiations well prepared. An FPC recruiter will guide you on what to say, what not to say, when to negotiate and when not to negotiate. You will also gain valuable insights to the other party through our briefing and debriefing process.

As your partner, we rely on you to be very specific, honest and open with your FPC recruiter on your wants and needs. After all, how can we present you with the best opportunity if we don’t know what’s on your mind? By working and having an honest dialogue with your FPC recruiter, the opportunity you are looking for may be just around the corner.

Interviewing Techniques and Tips

Interviewing techniques tip 1: Interview for as much as you can
Let’s assume you have focused your search on certain types of jobs and types of employers. You have developed a preferred list of both. You have scanned the horizon, conducted research, compiled your questions, and engaged your network for assistance. Your resume is in order.

Then job openings start to pop up through your web searches and referrals from your network. Some seem close but others don’t quite fit. You quickly skip over those jobs that are "beneath" you, have titles that appear to be foreign, or are in fields or industries you’re unfamiliar with. You have decided to be focused and only apply for positions that exactly match your search criteria.

But limiting your job search limits the possibilities. Once you create too many filters and requirements, you can easily overlook opportunities. In this type of market you have to get out there and actively uncover opportunities. Don't dismiss opportunities to interview based upon superficial and narrow criteria. You never know when an interview for a “not-quite-right” job will result in a surprising match, a referral to another opening, or an entirely new position tailored to fit your unique experience and abilities.
