Allied Health Science / Nutrition Care Process
« on: November 15, 2018, 10:04:29 PM »

I find this topic interesting and sharing for my colleagues and students. Happy to learn more on this topic and welcome comments from all

The Nutrition Care Process (NCP) is designed to improve the consistency and quality of individualized care for patients/clients or groups and the predictability of the patient/client outcomes. It is not intended to standardize nutrition care for each patient/client, but to establish a standardized process for providing care.

There are four steps in the process:
1.   Nutrition Assessment
2.   Nutrition Diagnosis
3.   Nutrition Intervention
4.   Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation

Nutrition and Food Engineering / 7 Steps for Avoiding Mindless Eating
« on: July 31, 2017, 01:46:48 AM »

The reason it can be difficult to eat healthily is that "hidden persuaders" can lead you into bad eating habits, says new research. Try these tips to avoid mindless eating:
•   Be aware of the size and shape of containers. It's the amount of food that counts, not what it looks like.
•   Use smaller plates and bowls. Empty plates and bowls, even those of a smaller size, cue some people to stop eating.
•   Read nutrition labels, paying attention to the serving size listed. Consider the facts; don't guess at how many calories you're eating.
•   Look past the packaging. The wording on a food's package or the language on a menu can influence you to actually like a food better, increasing your risk of overeating.
•   Keep visual reminders of how much you're eating. Keep wrappers, empty containers, bones, and other reminders of how much you've eaten nearby.
•   Think about eating a meal that's healthier overall. Don't just focus on separate parts of the meal.
•   Control your impulse purchases. Don't let signs encourage you to buy more than you need.

Nutrition and Food Engineering / Medicinal Use of Black seed
« on: July 31, 2017, 01:44:40 AM »

Black seed (Kalijeera) is a plant. People have used the seed to make medicine for over 2000 years.
Historically, black seed has been used for headache, toothache, and nasal congestion. It has also been used for “pink eye” (conjunctivitis), pockets of infection (abscesses), and parasites.

Today, black seed is used for treating digestive tract conditions including gas, colic, diarrhea, dysentery, constipation, and hemorrhoids. It is also used for respiratory conditions including asthma, allergies, cough, bronchitis, emphysema, flu, swine flu, and congestion.

Other uses include lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and treating cancer. Black seed is sometimes used in combination with cysteine, vitamin E, and saffron to relieve or ease the side effects of a chemotherapy drug called cisplatin.

Women use black seed for birth control, to start menstruation, and to increase milk flow.

Some people apply black seed directly to the skin for joint pain (rheumatism), and headache.

Nutrition and Food Engineering / Health benefits of Aloe Vera
« on: March 08, 2016, 01:53:36 PM »
Aloe vera is a popular medicinal plant that has been used for thousands of years.
It is best known for treating skin injuries, but also has several other beneficial effects on health.
Here are 8 health benefits of Aloe vera that are supported by science.

1. Aloe Vera contains bioactive compounds that can improve health
Each leaf is full of a slimy tissue that stores water, which makes the leaves thick. This slimy, water-filled tissue is the “gel” we associate with Aloe vera products.
The gel contains most of the bioactive compounds in the plant, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants.

2. Aloe Vera has potent Antioxidant and Antibacterial properties
Aloe vera gel contains powerful antioxidants, which belong to a large family of substances known as polyphenols.
These polyphenols, along with several other compounds in Aloe vera, can help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infections in humans.

3. Aloe Vera accelerates the healing of burns
Aloe vera is most commonly used as a topical medication, rubbed onto the skin rather than eaten.
It has long been known as a treatment for sores, particularly burns, including sunburns.
Studies suggest that it is an effective topical treatment for first- and second-degree burns.
A review of 4 experimental studies found that Aloe vera could reduce the healing time of burns by around 9 days compared to conventional medication.

4. Pure Aloe Vera juice reduces dental plaque as effectively as mouthwash
Tooth decay and diseases of the gum are very common health problems.
One of the best ways to prevent this from happening is to reduce the buildup of plaque (bacterial biofilms) on the teeth.
Aloe vera does this by killing the plaque-producing bacterium Streptococcus mutansin the mouth, as well as the yeast Candida albicans.

5. Aloe Vera can be used to treat mouth ulcers (Canker Sores)
Many people have experienced mouth ulcers, or canker sores, at some point in their lives.
Studies have convincingly shown that Aloe vera treatment can accelerate the healing of mouth ulcers.
In another study, Aloe vera gel not only accelerated the healing of mouth ulcers, it also reduced the pain associated with them.

6. Aloe Vera can help treat constipation
Aloe vera has often be used to treat constipation. This time latex provides the benefits. The latex is a sticky yellow residue found just under the skin of the leaf. The key compound responsible for this effect is called barbaloin, which has well-established laxative effects. Contrary to popular belief, Aloe vera does not appear to be effective against other digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

7. Aloe Vera may improve skin elasticity and help prevent wrinkles
Topical application of the gel was shown to increase collagen production and improve skin elasticity over a 90-day period .Aloe vera reduced erythema (redness of the skin), but was also found to dehydrate skin cells.

8. Aloe Vera may lower blood sugar levels in Diabetics
Aloe vera has sometimes been used as a traditional diabetes remedy .It is said to enhance insulin sensitivity and help improve blood sugar management. Additionally, there have been some cases of liver damage reported with long-term ingestion of Aloe vera supplements.
