Research valorisation is the process that adds value – social, environmental or economical – to research results. Knowledge is not only published but also transformed for users, customers and society, and such transformation calls upon knowledge and technology transfer (KTT).

KTT is part of the third mission of universities and is essential to research organisations. It requires a team, and it is risky and lengthy, but it can also be rewarding. All research fields, including humanities and social sciences, can engage in this process.

What you don't know about IP protections – but should
Universities as business launchpads: creating spaces for enterprise to flourish
How faculty support and entrepreneurial programmes can boost research commercialisation
Here's how it works:

1. Choose your objectives
Your institution might have specific objectives and a strategy for research valorisation. Its frame will come from the legal context, national strategy and your institution's policies. A successful KTT demands a strong alignment between the institution's and the researchers' objectives. Your motivation must be clear: is it to make your research more visible and "useful"? To generate collaborations and jobs? To make money? To create your own company? To attract good students? To boost your reputation? Or something else? The impact of research valorisation on your career recognition could be limited. Many researchers fear that valorisation will impede their ability to publish, but it's not publish or valorise; you can do both in parallel.

2. Know your rights
As a creator of knowledge, you are an author (of publications, software, databases, algorithms or methods), an inventor (of technological solutions to technological problems) or a contributor to specific know-how. Your activity will create intellectual assets. Intellectual property (IP) is inevitable; it exists de facto (such as for software). So, you can try to ignore it, but it's more professional to manage it. It's all about appropriation and granting rights.

In most countries, the ownership of researchers' creations goes to their employer. The creators nevertheless have many rights, including paternity (which is the right to request that communication about the creation mentions you as the inventor/creator) and financial incentives in the case of commercial exploitation; they are also often entitled to use research results IP to create a new company (spin-off). You must refer to your organisation's legal framework and regulations.

To know more and make progress, you must contact an authority: your office in charge of research valorisation. Such offices may have various names. You may look for an office or department for valorisation, tech transfer, knowledge transfer, IP management or licensing. Those may be part of your organisation's administration, the legal department, the research department or the rectorate or may even be in an external subsidiary. The common international name is KTO/TTO (knowledge/tech transfer office).

3. Build your team
The process of research valorisation is complex and requires skills that cannot be brought together in one person. You have to build a team that will provide you with all the necessary support for R&D activities, IP protection, understanding the users and negotiating. This team might include students, peers, partners, service providers and your KTO, which will oversee the whole process and liaise with relevant stakeholders. Your innovation ecosystem is crucial. Your transfer project might involve funding/innovation agencies, incubators, industrial or public partners or associations. Your core team must include a KTT professional (from your KTO), completed by an adviser or expert in the field of use of your results.

As the creator of those results, you are hugely valuable not only on the scientific side but also in identifying potential applications and partners.

4. Use the right tools
The first step is to inform your university through a simple formal procedure or document called an "invention disclosure". Keep in mind that all sorts of results can be transferred, not only inventions. Although ideas circulate freely, several results can be protected: know-how, algorithms, inventions, devices, design, molecules or software, for example.

Explain what your results are, why they are original, what problems they address and the potential beneficiaries. Many KTOs have templates and can help you complete them based on your initial disclosure.

This is the basis for a "valorisation and exploitation plan", which will help you throughout the process and can be used to get public funding for proof of concept, for example.

The IP protection strategy is a major issue. IP protection is compatible with publication (but you have to do it in the right order to avoid novelty destruction), open science and open-source policy. Protection can combine using IP tools (such as patents, copyright or trademarks) and maintaining confidentiality (secrecy). Discuss it with your KTO.

Once IP is protected, granting rights to a third party is possible through all kinds of licences, from a business use with financial objectives to a non-commercial use aimed at social impact, for instance.

The valorisation strategy must be built by the team, in accordance with your institution's rules and policy. The pathway to effective transfer and use of your research results can include public funding, and sometimes the creation of a spin-off. Researchers are essential to this process, and support is available and necessary for you.

Most academic activities involve competitive selection and quality control, meaning that you hear "no" more often than "yes". Trying to get an article published in a peer-reviewed journal is no exception. Of course, it lessens the sting of rejection if you think it is unfair, but that "no" gives you a chance to think carefully about the quality of what you wrote.

If your article follows the standard model in the humanities, it is written by one person and submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. The editor then anonymises it and sends it to two reviewers, whose identity is not revealed to you. Crowd-sourced peer review has stayed marginal in humanities subjects. The problem may be that it takes time to review a text-based article properly, so sharing it across many readers is less efficient, despite the increased objectivity of that approach.

Some journals commit to a quick review process, say three months, but others might keep you waiting for a year. This depends on how quickly they can find reviewers who are available at the right time. Eventually you will receive an email telling you the outcome, with or without feedback.

Understanding peer review: what it is, how it works and why it is important
How thought leadership can build your institution's reputation online
Making practice publishable: a journal article-cum-podcast
If you receive a rejection, the first step is to see it as a form of feedback: firm and unpleasant but clear. You have written something with readers in mind, so readers' responses are your guide. Many people only submit an article after they have discussed it with a critical friend or a mentor, and post-rejection it is all the more important that you turn again to others. They can tell you if there are flaws in your argument, or if you should try another approach.

Rejection without feedback
If you have had no feedback from the editor (and some will refuse to enter into correspondence), then send your article somewhere else, as it might not fit the profile of that journal. When choosing your next target for submission, look carefully at its editorial board. Some people serve on several journals at once, and the point of submitting elsewhere is that you are looking for new readers.

Rejection with feedback
If you have received written comments, read them carefully. Your reviewers are your first, and possibly your most thorough, readers. Some editors ask the reviewer for two sets of comments. One set is for the editorial board, and the other is for the author. This reminds reviewers to be kind as well as thorough. Not everyone is that considerate. If feedback is blunt, remember that these people do not know you.

Request your own feedback from the right people
A critical friend is someone you trust, not necessarily in your area of expertise. They will challenge you safely, in confidence. They are not the social media connection who will leap to your defence in public without reading what you wrote.

You have now reached the rewriting stage.

Look hard at your objectives
Why did you write this article? Is it part of a developing project? Is it an experimental piece? The comments will tell you how it comes across. If they ask for more development, then should your revised version be longer? Or more concise?

Dismantle, then rebuild
Pull apart your plan and lay out its components. I once rewrote an article by keeping the theory and replacing an obscure primary source with one that was better known. It meant that the ideas appealed to more readers because the article was more accessible.

Follow the style sheet
A first submission should follow the journal's style guide to the letter. This takes time, but it will earn goodwill. Journals discourage multiple submissions (when someone submits the same paper to several journals at once) and using the house style shows commitment.

Revise and resubmit
A "revise and resubmit" is not a rejection. You are invited to act on detailed advice from reviewers who see merit in your work and who want to improve it. When you resubmit your paper, the editor will show it to the same reviewers. Therefore, follow their recommendations carefully.

If in doubt, consult the editor. I have resubmitted an article explaining by email why I could not implement one of the suggestions, and that was fine. Another time, I asked an editor to decide which reviewer recommendation I should follow and which to drop. If doubts remain after resubmission, the editor can ask a third reviewer.

Try again
If you view rejection as a form of feedback that gives you time and space to improve your work, you will be on the right track. Try again and you will probably succeed.

Predatory publishing, sometimes called write-only publishing or deceptive publishing, is an exploitive academic publishing business model that involves charging publication fees to authors without checking articles for quality and legitimacy and without providing the other editorial and publishing services that legitimate academic journals provide, whether open access or not. They are regarded as predatory because scholars are tricked into publishing with them, although some authors may be aware that the journal is poor quality or even fraudulent. New scholars from developing countries are said to be especially at risk of being misled by predatory publishers. According to one study, 60% of articles published in predatory journals receive no citations over the five-year period following publication.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA)

What is Robotic Process Automation?

Robotic Process Automation is the technology that allows anyone today to configure computer software, or a "robot" to emulate and integrate the actions of a human interacting within digital systems to execute a business process. RPA robots utilize the user interface to capture data and manipulate applications just like humans do. They interpret, trigger responses and communicate with other systems in order to perform on a vast variety of repetitive tasks. Only substantially better: an RPA software robot never sleeps, makes zero mistakes and costs a lot less than an employee.

How is RPA different from other enterprise automation tools?

In contrast to other, traditional IT solutions, RPA allows organizations to automate at a fraction of the cost and time previously encountered. RPA is also non-intrusive in nature and leverages the existing infrastructure without causing disruption to underlying systems, which would be difficult and costly to replace. With RPA, cost efficiency and compliance are no longer an operating cost but a byproduct of the automation.

Academia not preparing youths rightly for job market: executives..

Academic grading like CGPA has become a tool to reduce the number of jobseekers against the high demand because such achievement does not necessarily reflect the competency sought by companies, top private sector officials said yesterday.

There is a gap between students' learning from universities and what the companies look for in jobseekers.

As a result, companies have to put in additional effort like arranging skills training programme or recruiting from abroad to meet their requirements, they said in a roundtable.

The Office of Professional Development of the Bangladesh Youth Leadership Centre (BYLC) and The Daily Star organised the discussion styled "Skill strategies for jobs: How Bangladesh can meet skills demand for a new era of work and technology while ensuring diversity" at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka.

"Young people who are entering the job market have huge incapacity to learn," said Mominul Islam, managing director of IPDC Finance.

The financial sector is rapidly changing around the world and Bangladesh may fail to keep pace because of lack of skills, he added.

Shaheen Khan, CEO of supermarket chain Meena Bazar, said during hiring they look for people with skills in supply chain management.

"But these things are not taught at universities."

Khan said they tried to collaborate with some private universities to overcome the issues but could not succeed.

"So, what we had to do was recruiting people as management trainee and teach them from scratch," he said.

Quazi Mohammad Shahed, CEO of Partex Star Group, said in his career he has seen people coming out of universities "with no clue on how work gets done".

He recommended that business houses offer students part-time job at different stages of their university education so that they can graduate with some practical knowledge.

As a local business group they want to ensure diversity and for this they recruit from different universities and not only from Dhaka, Shahed added.

The nature of jobs is changing, which the academia does not take into account, said Eleash Mridha, managing director of Pran Group.

For example, basic knowledge on accounting and bookkeeping is no longer required because accounting software now takes care of it.

"I think day-to-day accounting, what we learnt during academic life, is gone now. What we need is someone who can design the software," he said.

Hossain Khaled, managing director of Anwar Group, said in some of their recent recruitments they did not include CGPA (cumulative grade point average) as requirement but preferred experiences.

Organisations like the BYLC that work on skills development can collaborate with private companies on what kind of skills are being developed among students at present and what kind of job they can do.

A significant amount of remittance is going overseas because of a lack of middle management in the country.

"It's because we cannot find people here," Khaled added.

Maliha M Quadir, managing director of Shohoz, said as a new sector in Bangladesh they found it difficult to find people who could "think and adapt to new things".

Employees of start-ups like Shohoz have to face new situations every day, she said.

"So people need to be very agile in their way of thinking, adapting and doing things," she added.

"As a journalist I have learned over the many years that there is a part where many jobs are actually going after few people," said Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star.

"But that's at one level. But at a larger level that too few jobs are beingchased by three, four, five, ten times multiple of that job. So, that is a mismatch."

The youth unemployment rate in Bangladesh is 12 percent, in contrast to 3.5 percent in India and 4.05 percent in China, according to the World Bank.

Digital journalism is the field where media houses like The Daily Star will find their future growth, he said.

"So those who want to be journalists in the future will have to be digital or multimedia journalists and they need to have digital skills as well as the ability to write," he added.

The country's education system does not equip the youth with critical thinking capacity, which is required for the 21st century, said Ejaj Ahmad, founder and president of the BYLC.

And this is where the BYLC comes in: it offers world-class curriculum to overcome such challenges, he said.

Syed Farhad Ahmed, managing director of Aamra Companies; Rashed Noman, country director of Augmedix Bangladesh; Manjur Mahmud, director and chief operating officer of DataSoft; and Rahel Ahmed, CEO of Prime Bank, also spoke, among others.

Exploring Significant Family Income Ranges of Career Decision Difficulties of Adolescents in Bangladesh Applying Regression Techniques

Abstract:
Career Decision Making is essential part of human life. Most of the people are thinking about this since adolescence. Therefore, we should analyze significant features about career decision difficulties of adolescents in Bangladesh. The goal of this work to explore the most affected class of adolescents about career decision difficulties considering family income ranges in Bangladesh. In this situation, we gathered several records of high school going adolescents at Faridganj, Chandpur, Bangladesh using career decision difficulties questionnaire which was proposed by I. Gati et. al. Hence, several regression algorithms were considered for experimental analysis based on the characteristics of our primary career decision difficulties dataset. After that, these algorithms were applied into career decision difficulties dataset of adolescents and explored the best regression algorithm based on experimental results from them. Then, our selected best algorithm was implemented throughout different datasets (split from primary dataset) and interpreted their findings. Finally, we observed that middle level family income ranges (10000-21000 BDT) of adolescents were faced more difficulties to take proper decision about career than others. This analysis is suggested as a complementary tool for further psychological treatment about career decisions.
