Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching

Launched through a generous gift from Gustave and Rita Hauser, HILT’s mission is to catalyze innovation and excellence in learning and teaching at Harvard. Four sub-goals were developed in HILT’s inaugural year:

building on Harvard’s strengths in teaching and learning;
meeting the educational needs of students (both technological and pedagogical);
strengthening the science of learning; and
developing a robust network at Harvard around teaching and learning innovation.

HILT aims to be mutually reinforcing to and non-duplicative of related goals and efforts across the Schools, and to forge collaborations and provide support for these activities. The challenges we face require the combined efforts of individual students, faculty, and staff, and the thoughtful coordination of Programs, Centers, Departments, and Schools with each other and the University as a whole.

Over the course of ten years, HILT aims to have demonstrably seeded hundreds of local innovations and experiments at a variety of scales. We anticipate that those activities will have engaged a large number of Harvard instructors in renewing and improving their teaching, will have benefited student learning, and will have made teaching and learning efforts more visible and discussed across campus. We also expect to facilitate the “institutionalization” of innovations and experiments that are successful such that they are self-sustaining. A second major aim is to have developed and nurtured a large and diverse community of practice around teaching and learning excellence that involves all Harvard schools. Finally, we aim to have facilitated significant, high quality research on learning and teaching that is used by Harvard instructors and students and beyond.

Teaching & Research Forum / Rubric Tool
« on: April 24, 2018, 04:23:08 PM »
A rubric is a great tool for teachers because it is a simple way to set up a grading criteria for assignments. Not only is this tool useful for teachers, it is helpful for students as well. A rubric defines in writing what is expected of the student to get a particular grade on an assignment.

Heidi Goodrich Andrade, a rubrics expert, defines a rubric as "a scoring tool that lists the criteria for a piece of work or 'what counts.' " For example, a rubric for an essay might tell students that their work will be judged on purpose, organization, details, voice, and mechanics.

A good rubric also describes levels of quality for each of the criteria. These levels of performance may be written as different ratings (e.g., Excellent, Good, Needs Improvement) or as numerical scores (e.g., 4, 3, 2, 1) Under mechanics, for example, the rubric might define the lowest level of performance as "7-10 misspellings, grammar, and punctuation errors," and the highest level as "all words are spelled correctly; your work shows that you understand subject-verb agreement, when to make words possessive, and how to use commas, semicolons and periods."

Why use rubrics?

According to Heidi Goodrich Andrade:
Rubrics help students and teachers define "quality."
When students use rubrics regularly to judge their own work, they begin to accept more responsibility for the end product. It cuts down on the "am I done yet?" questions.
Rubrics reduce the time teachers spend grading student work and makes it easier for teachers to explain to students why they got the grade they did and what they can do to improve.
Parents usually like the rubrics concept once they understand it, and they find rubrics useful when helping with homework. As one teacher says: "They know exactly what their child needs to do to be successful."
Involve your students

Understanding a Rubric: Arrange the students into groups of four or more and give them the rubric you will be using for a particular task. Tell the students to discuss the task you have given them and create quick samples of papers which would receive marks in each of the categories. The groups will then present their results to the whole class.
Creating a Rubric: It is a good idea to involve your students in creating their own rubrics for classroom assignments. A student who can write the rubric for a math problem knows the whole process inside and out, and he/she can apply the knowledge and skills learned from the process to future assignments.
How do I create a good rubric?

Sometimes it's not possible to find an appropriate existing rubric to use or modify. To create your own rubric, follow these steps.

1. List the criteria that will be used in assessing performance in the first column.
The criteria you use should be related to the learning outcome(s) that you are assessing. For example, a musical performance might be rated for intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and tone quality and an oral presentation might be rated for content, organization, delivery and language. Be sure that your criteria are explicit. "Neatness" would not be a good criterion because the term "neat" is not explicit enough. What is neatness? You may want to look at some actual examples of student work to see if you have omitted any important criteria.

2. Determine your performance ratings / levels in the first row.
Examples of performance ratings may be:

Descriptors (In Progress, Basic, Proficient, Advanced)
Numbers (1,2,3,4)
3. Write a description for each performance level.
Describe the different levels of performance that match each criterion. You may want to start with the best and worst levels of quality, and then fill in the middle levels based on your knowledge of common problems. It may be helpful to sort examples of actual student work into three piles: the very best, the poorest and those in between.  Try to articulate what makes the good assignments good and the poor assignments poor.

4. After use, evaluate and revise rubric as needed.

Bangladesh should embrace Internet of Things: experts

Star Business Report
Bangladesh should embrace the "Internet of Things" as it can help the country efficiently maintain key infrastructure, manage traffic properly and boost economic growth, according to experts.

IoT can immediately improve traffic management of cities, increase crop production, and maintain important infrastructure, they told a seminar at the Digital World on Friday.

For example, running air-conditioners at over 25 degree Celsius alone can save $67,644 a day in Bangladesh and IoT can ensure that.

“The whole world is moving towards this new technical innovation and if we fail to embrace it we will miss our next development scope,” said Khursheed Khan, managing partner at California-based Sagacious Solutions Inc, at the seminar titled “Fourth Industrial Revolution and Opportunities of Internet of Things”.

Khan said big data analytics, IoT and sensors can give a huge boost to the environment and agriculture, transportation and logistics, healthcare, manufacturing and utilities.

IoT is all about connecting objects to the network and enabling them to collect and share data. Machines, buildings, cars and many more things can be embedded with software and sensors that let them collect and exchange data.

It means people can control temperature of a room using an app or turn on the lights remotely. At city scale, IoT can generate real-time information with sensors in the road monitoring the flow of traffic and a public app showing available parking spots.

Faruk Ahmed Jewel, an expert from the Prime Minister's Office, said using IoT can help cut city congestion by at least 40 percent.

“So, the government is seriously considering adopting it.  Different government agencies have a huge amount of information and we need to use the information to find solutions,” he said.

DataSoft Systems Bangladesh Ltd, a local IT firm, is working in many countries on IoT. It is helping the Democratic Republic of the Congo run one of its longest bridges.

M Manjur Mahmud, chief operating officer of DataSoft, said, “We have been able to convince Japan how IoT can help cut electricity bills. Using this promise we are now installing IoT in 10,000 flats in Japan.”

M Helal Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the management information systems at Dhaka University, said IoT can help boost the country's overall growth.

“Billions of devices are connected with each other which are giving us a huge amount of information. We can create new knowledge by analysing the data and it can change our lifestyle,” said Ahmed.

Mahboob Zaman, a former president of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services, said adopting new technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, robotics and augmented reality is needed to grow further.

Software Engineering / Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk)
« on: April 23, 2018, 04:59:36 PM »
Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) operates a marketplace for work that requires human intelligence. The MTurk web service enables companies to programmatically access this marketplace and a diverse, on-demand workforce. Developers can leverage this service to build human intelligence directly into their applications.

Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk)

While computing technology continues to improve, there are still many things that human beings can do much more effectively than computers, such as identifying objects in a photo or video, performing data de-duplication, transcribing audio recordings or researching data details. Traditionally, tasks like this have been accomplished by hiring a large temporary workforce (which is time consuming, expensive and difficult to scale) or have gone undone.

MTurk aims to make accessing human intelligence simple, scalable, and cost-effective. Businesses or developers needing tasks done (called Human Intelligence Tasks or “HITs”) can use the robust MTurk API to access thousands of high quality, global, on-demand Workers—and then programmatically integrate the results of that work directly into their business processes and systems. MTurk enables developers and businesses to achieve their goals more quickly and at a lower cost than was previously possible.
