IT Forum / Do we really know the difference between cc and bcc?
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:15:38 PM »
Did you ever want to send an email to a whole bunch of people but you didn't want everyone on your email list to know who everyone else is?  Or did you ever have a need to secretly share an email conversation with another person?  Then you need to know what that Bcc is for on your email list.

Usually you would put the email address of the person you're sending an email to in the "To..." line.  As many of us old timers know "Cc..." stands for carbon copy and this line is for anyone you'd like to send a copy of your email to.

Then there's "Bcc..." which stands for Blind Carbon Copy.  Use this line when you don't want anyone  in the "To..." or "Cc..." lines to know who else received the message.  If you put the email addresses of all your intended recipients in the "Bcc..." line none of them will know who else received the message.  It's a way to secretly share an email message with others or send a message to a whole group of people without sharing everyone's email address with everyone else.

One in all PC tips / What Does "BETA" Mean?
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:08:59 PM »
There are lots of technology terms that you’ll come across these days and BETA is one of them.
Developing software (computer programs) takes time and lots of trial and error.  Many times, especially on the internet, developers will create a webpage and put it on the internet before it’s actually done.  They do this so the general public can experiment with it and they can collect data to improve it.  These “not quite ready for prime time” websites/ Products/ Software are usually labeled “BETA Version.”

Which we got before the final Version.

One in all PC tips / Surfing and Googling Around
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:02:52 PM »
The internet is big, really, really big, and if you want to use it effectively you have to be familiar with search engines.  Google.com has become the search engine of choice for millions of internet users.  There are others and if the past is any guide there will be a “better than Google” search engine some day, but for now Google seems to be the best.  Part of the reason they are the best is that they keep developing new ways of looking at the internet.  Below are a couple additional features that Google offers that you might want to check out now and in the future as they continue to develop:

http://news.google.com/  Need a current event?  Forget about the newspaper, use the internet like teenagers do to find stories that are only minutes old.

http://images.google.com/  Arguably the best image search engine in the world.  Try finding a picture of something today.

http://www.google.com/products  Looking to make a purchase. Shop and compare prices online first using Google's Product Search.

http://www.google.com/finance  What to check the stock market, try this website for a quick overview.

http://maps.google.com/   Looking for an up to date map or satellite photo, check out these amazingly easy to manipulate maps and photos.

http://video.google.com/  Google has their own video search engine.  Find an educational video on the internet that you can play for your class

http://scholar.google.com/  Another project that Google is working on is to create a more efficient way to search scholarly papers.

http://books.google.com/  This is a great way to jump into some literature.  Check out a book online, read some passages and find out where you can buy a copy.

Dear Students,

We observed that some of the students frequently registered themselves also browsing and clicking various “Pay per Click” and “PTC web site” in student browsing Lab. These sorts of act is a violation of rules as these labs are meant for students activities such as Preparing Assignments, Teaching Evaluation, DIU Student mail checking, result viewing, study through learning feedback system, and also use  DIU forum for sharing ideas.

You all are requested to stop these sorts of website viewing inside university browsing Labs both in Main campus and Business campus.

One in all PC tips / Do you know your processor?
« on: June 18, 2012, 04:13:35 PM »
What's a Core i7 and why is it better than an i3? There's also Core i5? And what about AMD? Figuring out your processor is half the battle of buying a PC.

What are cores?
In simple words, a core is the part of the processor responsible for carrying out calculations needed to execute program. When a chip has multiple cores, it means it can process multiple instructions at the same time, thus increasing the software's speed.

Intel has three main Core families...
Core i3: Has two cores and Hyper Threading (HT) - a technology that simulates more cores than actually exist on the processor. This improves performance of programs that can utilize the extra cores. The i3, however, lacks Turbo Boost for extra muscle when needed. Ideal for average users.

Core i5: Has four cores, but no HT. Consumes a little more power than i3. The i5 comes with Turbo Boost that allows for an increase in clock speeds in the range of 300 to 400MHz. For example, if the processor has a speed of 2.8GHz, Turbo Boost will push the speed up to 3.1GHz. Ideal for power users

Core i7: Has four to six cores, with HT. The least power-efficient, but the most powerful. Ideal for professionals who work in 3D or edit multimedia.

Don't forget AMD
While AMD doesn't have Intel's raw performance, it's still good enough for everyday tasks and comes at a cheaper price. Of the lot, two AMD processors deserve mention.

The A 3870K: Has four cores and is part of the Fusion series. It promises better graphics at budget prices. Ideal for average users who want a bit of a gaming boost.

The FX 8150: Has eight cores and is part of the Bulldozer series. Not power-efficient and a bit slow in less demanding tasks. But works great in intensive processing tasks like video encoding and 3D modeling. Ideal for a professional on a budget.

The new processors What is Ivy Bridge?
Every year, Intel comes out with a new class of processors. The new Ivy Bridge is the third generation of Core i processors, and can be identified by model numbers that begin with 3. In terms of performance, Ivy Bridge processors average 10% faster than last year's Sandy Bridge processors. They are also more power-efficient.

Use of PC / Five Important Tips Regarding Your Office Computers
« on: June 18, 2012, 03:10:17 PM »
There are certain things you should be doing with your computer every single day, and there are other things that you should be doing every few weeks. It may seem like a hassle, but in the long run it will save time and money. Consider a few of these tips to computer maintenance:

1. Files – What your employees do with their files is important. If you want a computer to run faster and easier, it’s important to store all of the files in one place. It’s important to remember not to store files on the “C: Drive” and “My Documents” because this can easily cause errors and slow the entire system down. You may even consider purchasing document management software if you have a lot of documents on one machine.

2. Downloads – While downloads eventually turn into files, it’s important to delete the download once you’ve extracted what you need (this is particularly common when someone downloads a “Zip” file). It’s also important to remind employees to stay away from suspicious files. If you don’t know who sent it, trash it.

3. Anti-Virus Software – This is one aspect of computer maintenance that companies often miss. Many businesses take this seriously at the start of a business, set up anti-virus software on all the computers, and then forget about it. The truth is, viruses change every day. According to Kaspersky Lab, there were “238,045,358 malicious programs were detected and neutralized on user computers.” For this reason, it is important to update the software each morning. Although it may seem like a lot, it doesn’t take long to update the software if you do it every day. At the very least, try to make this a monthly priority. Also consider running a full anti-virus scan on each computer a few times each year.

4. Emails and Passwords – This is the part of computer maintenance that many would call “nerve-racking.” It’s important to delete old emails and change passwords every few months. If you have thousands of emails stored on the computer, you will certainly see your computer begin to slow down when trying to open websites and documents. It’s also important to change your password frequently in order to keep all of your information safe from hackers or outsider interfere You may want to consider purchasing encryption software for an extra layer of protection.

5. Cleaning – Not many people realize the importance of keeping a computer dust free. If a computer is full of dust, it can overheat and will then eventually break. This is difficult for many companies to remember because dust can be difficult to see. If your employees keep their computers on the floor, no one really thinks to even look down. For this reason, you may want to consider a 15 minute computer cleaning break every few weeks.
