Congratulations from DIU, Law Department to Sayeda Rezwana Hasan for achieving Ramon Magsaysay Award 2012

Syeda Rezwana Hasan, Chief Executive of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), has attained Magsaysay Awards-2012. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation announced Wednesday the award which is widely recognized as Asia's Nobel Prize.

Syeda Rezwana Hasan is an attorney and environmentalist of Bangladesh. She is recognized for her uncompromising courage and impassioned leadership that affirms the people's right to a good environment in Bangladesh. Rezwana continues to strive for more labour rights and safer working environment in ship breaking industry in Bangladesh. She has also successfully sued organizations involved in improper use of polythene, deforestation, hill cutting, shrimp farming and building illegal establishments in the St. Martin`s Island and important public places.


Her leadership brought BELA the Global 500 Roll of Honor in 2003 by the United Nations Environment Program. Ministry of Forests and Environment of Bangladesh government awarded her "The Inaugural Environment Award"Hasan was born in Dhanmondi, Dhaka to Mahibul and Suraiya Hasan, and hails from the district of Habiganj.[3] She married her classmate lawyer-entrepreneur Abu Bakr Siddique, and has a daughter and two sons. in 2007 for raising environmental awareness.
Rezwana was also awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2009. She has also been dubbed as a Hero of Environment by the world renowned American news magazine TIME.

Syeda Rezwana Hasan was born in January 15, 1968, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. She attained her bachelor and masters degree from Law Department, Dhaka University and joined Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) in July, 1993. She married her classmate lawyer-entrepreneur Abu Bakr Siddique, and has a daughter and two sons.

I have never expected such a lead. She can be on the lead for many reasons but not for the reason that made her on the lead yesterday. I am deeply shocked and demand his quick release form the hands of the perpetrators.
