Title: Mom/Ma'am, I've achieved my most desirable gift.....
Post by: Farhana Helal Mehtab on January 04, 2013, 08:06:12 PM
Mom/Ma'am, I've achieved my most desirable gift....

Yesterday, it was 3rd January 2013, the end of Fall semester 2012. When I started my office in the early morning, it was so quiet since it was the first day of semester break. I usually don't enjoy the campus without my lively students. I love to see that from 9 am to 5 pm the campus will be full of vibrant students and we teachers will be busy handling them, taking classes, checking scripts, counseling them, dealing with their co curricular activities and so on. Other than this, DIU campus seems like a silent tomb to me.  Just after passing some time in office I heard voices of the students. Sahadat informed me that the laptop distribution program had started. Yes, this is the moment which I love to see. I love to see the winning faces of DIU students. "In fact its their winning..."- this statement came boldly from the honorable Chairman sir, Mr Sabur Khan in yesterday's laptop distribution program. Around 10:45 am I entered into the auditorium & found all the young faces along with the faces of knowledgeable professors & the top management people. My eyes were searching for my law students. Suddenly I heard, "Ma'am, we are here." I smiled to them & took my place with the teachers. The program started with the usual process of delivering of speeches containing advices for the students. The last speech was delivered by honorable Chairman sir. I must say that it was a very lively speech as he incorporated all the students in his speech. It was just like a question-answer session speech which made the speech different & attractive to the students. After the program the photo session started & I left the auditorium.

After coming to my room, I started working with the plan of Spring semester 2013. My office room was calm and quiet when suddenly got the sound of my own children "Mom"... I became confused as they were supposed to be at school at that time! Then I heard a knock on my door and found that all the laptop winners of law department had come to show me their achievement. "Ma'am, this one is my laptop..."ma'am, please look at my one." "Ma'am, yes, I've opened my one..." So many excited voices! They all visited my room to show their achievements... the feeling was so precocious... as if the sons & daughters have come to show their mother what they have achieved. I was so touched by their feeling of love for me. Yes, I must say, its their achievement. Honorable Chairman sir said in the program, "Though its, 'one student, one laptop'  our project but we don't provide you laptops at the time of admission. We check your performance & then provide you that. And remember if we get any complain from your parents about the misuse of laptop we will take it away from you." Attitude must be like this, it may sound little harsh but it's correct. Its just like "Prize & Punishment Theory".  Among all the students two of mine, Sayeed Rayhan & Rubel were selected for receiving laptop from honorable Chairman of BoT for securing GPA 4. It made Rubel more excited. And I would like to take this opportunity to say that I personally love these two boys for their class performance & sweet behavior with me. After some photo shots with me they left my room with cheerful mood. Today when I shared this experience with my children during lunch time, my baby said, "Hmmm ... I've to share my mom with DIU law students. I'm sure they address you as mom not ma'am." "Didn't I hear that word yesterday in my office room?! My best wishes for my own children & for my loving students ..... They are always in my thoughts & prayers.

I just want to add one thing more, that is, though we are faculty members, but we address you as 'mom' in our heart. Personally I believe that. It's really such a blessings that I get this opportunity in my workplace, such an homely environment all around though sometimes we have to be professional too.

Dear Ferdousi,

I remember one thing, before my  joining in DIU, you were asked to know about me. You phoned my Uttara University colleague Saad & asked, how I was. My colleague answered, "Farhana ma'am is just like my mother." You said, "Now, I don't have anything to ask, anything to know about her." Later, after few months, when I came to know about this conversation, I just felt like seeing my ex colleague, my loving Saad's face once again. This is the mutual feeling we shared in my previous work place & I know, this is the feeling we share in DIU with some colleagues. I feel so good that now DIU, Law dept is my another family where some colleagues are my loving brothers & some are just like my own sons & daughters. Love you.....love for Ferdousi, Farzana & Manjida....my beautiful loving daughters like younger sisters.

Dear Ma'am

Last few days, though I thought I should change myself in terms of my profession regarding the fact that there should not be any such emotional attachment with anybody specially with my students. But actually it's not possible. Cause, we are human being. Though we should control our emotion towards something but practically it's really tough. Beloved persons like you could understand my point. Sometimes I am a little bit confused. Cause, at the end of the day, what really matters to me is that, we are human being. Just pray for me so that I could really turn on my journey in 2013 and on wards.

Dear Farzana,

Do you know, what the Dhaka University, Law Department students address me? Its an interesting matter .... from 17th batch to 22nd batch of DU, Law, I'm addressed as 'Mehtab apu' / from 23rd batch to 28th batch I'm addressed as 'Frahana apu' / from 29th batch to 34th & onwards batch I'm addressed as 'Ma'am' ...... Isn't it very interesting? Riaduzzaman, means your Riad sir is from DU, Law, 24th batch, so according to departmental relationship he is my younger brother. So, he has all the rights to talk to me about his desire......

Dear Ferdousi,

I wish you all the luck for the journey of 2013 .....  I'll never say, forget the past; rather I'll say learn something from the past. And be matured because you have add another valuable year in your life.

You all are in my thoughts & prayer and will be always InshAllah.

Shimu dear,

I remember the first day when I made you learn dialog for drama.....you were so happy! You were so active in my project competition ..... still I can see your sparkling eyes for me. I remember your teary eyes after the spelling competition..... you could not say me anything just started crying!  Another day you came in my office and expressed your desire for writing. I introduced you with forum writing. I gave you time limitation that just next day I wanted to see two lines from you in forum. And yes, you listened to me .... you started.... I saw your post 1 & appreciated.  Now whenever I see your lines in forum, I feel so good. In fact the teachers are always beside those students who need them. I wish you quality time in DIU.

Love always,
Ma'am
