Title: The Importance of Eye Contact
Post by: ariful892 on October 29, 2013, 11:20:43 AM
Making eye contact with your students sends a positive message and creates a welcoming, accepting atmosphere that encourages them to come back for more! Need a few examples?

***Direct eye contact with another person shows you wish to establish a connection with them. Looking away from them shows disinterest. You want your students to know that you are interested in them as a person, interested in their practice, and interested in being their teacher!

***If you are looking at your students then they will know that you are paying attention to them and their practice. This is especially comforting for newbies who are nervous about your class or unsure if they are doing the poses correctly and may be looking for reassurance. If you are looking around the room or at the floor they will probably wonder why you aren’t more attentive to what they are doing.

***Scanning the faces of your students will give you an idea of whether or not what your saying is registering with them. The looks in their eyes and on their faces will tell you if they are following you or if they are totally lost.

***Eye contact shows that you are confident in what you are doing and in your knowledge of the practice. Hiding your eyes from the students gives off a signal of insecurity. The last thing you want is a student to think you don’t really know what you’re doing. If they think you are clueless you can bet they will go find a teacher who looks like they know what their talking about!

***If you are willing to look your students in the eye, they are more likely to feel comfortable with you and approach you after class with any questions or concerns. Remember, we want to create a welcoming environment for our students, not one where they feel uncomfortable or where they think they cannot talk to you.
